Afcon 2022

With Afcon 2022 from 9 Jan to 6 Feb and the prospect of losing Aribo, Balogun and Bassey for a month, do you think this will be pivotal to our title challenge?

If Nigeria get to the final they could miss 4 league games.

If Helander is back and Borna fit then we should be ok I think.

Hope Nigeria win it!!

Winter break after the 2nd January, potentially will only miss one Scottish cup game (22nd January) and two league games 29th January v Ross County and 5th Feb v Hearts if they got to the final.

Can they play on 2nd January? Last I heard the club had asked for special permission for them to play before joining national squad.

It's actually more likely than not that we could be missing Helander and Barisic at that stage too, given their injury records so far this season.

We either trust Simpson for a few matches, go with youth, or go out and try to buy another left-sided centre back who can also play as a 3rd choice left back. If we can shift Simpson and have a couple of million to spare, I'd be up for that.

Does the diving Japanese not miss a few games for some Asia cup round about then?

Provided we can reach agreement with the Nigerian FA. They are entitled to call for the players to join their squad BEFORE the OF game. If they choose to do so it gives as a problem we could do without. Read a while ago we - and clubs across Europe - were talking to them but I've not seen any outcome reported.

they expect this variant to spread massively within the next two weeks, its probably rife all over Africa
On that basis then, we might even have to wait longer for them to come back into the squad if they are to self-isolate for ten days on their return?

it might with this Omicron kicking around. Infection rates are through the roof in South Africa
That is a good point should it not be a case of clubs expressing concerns with players going to these games and possible catching this virus meaning they might have to quarantine or isolate meaning missing more games

Wouldn’t be shocked if clubs are discussing this. All one players competing but if you lose them for longer then it becomes a nightmare!

There's no way they would cancel an international tournament though. They have to be seen to be protecting these above the European leagues.

Nice of us to pay them for playing for Nigeria while we have important games they'll miss. Let's hope it gets called off.

It should not be allowed to be played during a season!
Its bad for both. Clubs lose their players (which sucks for us, but it could be disastrous to clubs focused solely on survival with many African players like Watford), and the tournaments dont get as much attention as they would otherwise.
Just hold it either during the Euros like the Copa America or during the summer like the Gold Cup.
