Billy Hogg, an Outside Right (Winger), became the first England International to sign for Rangers in 1909 from Sunderland.

Hogg was in the England side at Ibrox, in the game v Scotland on 5 April 1902 that saw the deaths of 25 and injuries to more than 500 supporters, in the first Ibrox Disaster.

That 1908-09 season Hogg had captained Sunderland to an amazing 9-1 victory at St James park over bitter rivals Newcastle Utd, with Hogg scoring a Hat Trick.
Bizarrely, Newcastle would go on to win the English League that season, with Sunderland finishing in 3rd place.
Hogg had already won an English League Title with Sunderland 1902, and had scored 84 Goals in 303 appearances for Sunderland, before he signed for Rangers in May 1909.

His first full season at Ibrox saw Rangers finish 3rd in the Table, with Hogg's highlight being scoring the equaliser at Parkhead on New Years day.
The next three seasons, 1910-13 would see Rangers as Champions in all three seasons, and the winger Hogg struck up a great partnership with Willie Reid, who scored a staggering 126 Goals in 116 Games in those 3 seasons.
Billy Hogg himself was no slouch when it came to finding the net, scoring 44 goals in 96 games in the same period.
An outstanding return for a winger.
Hogg also won the Glasgow Cup and the Glasgow Merchants Charity Cup in 1911, defeating Celtic in both Finals.
He won the Glasgow Cup in 1912 and 1913 also, scoring in both Finals, 1-0 v Partick Thistle, and 3-1 v Celtic.
Injuries finally caught up with him in that last season 1912-13, limiting him to only 23 appearances.
Fittingly, his final appearance for Rangers was on St Georges day 1913, when he scored the winner in a 1-0 victory over Third Lanark.

What happened to him after he left us, did he serve in the war?

From Wiki
He left Rangers at the end of the season, spending a year with Dundee before accepting the position of player-manager at Raith Rovers. Following the outbreak of the First World War, Hogg returned to Wearside to work in an engineering works. After the war he became a local licensee.

(Edinburgh Evening News: November 9, 1915)
Billy Hogg, late of Sunderland, Glasgow Rangers and Dundee, is the most sought-after player in the North-East district of England. Practically all the clubs in the North-Eastern League have been endeavouring to induce him to play for them, but without success. He has absolutely declined to play for any club, and the only games he will take part in are those of a charitable nature.

Hogg is now settled down at Heaton (Newcastle), and following his trade as a fitter, being at present engaged in the making of munitions work.

Yet another brilliant historical post Mo, cap doffed.

The Alex Bennett mentioned in our team probably deserves a thread too.
A mainstay of the dominant Celtic team in the first decade of the 20th century, he is one of very few who transferred directly between us and them when he joined Rangers. He then won titles at Ibrox after his titles at Parkhead.

Cheers dh,
I did do some research on Alex Bennett quite a few years ago, and may have even posted it on the old board, but I never saved it (wish I had).
He does deserve a thread on his own.
He won 4 League Titles in a row with Celtic, and 3 League Titles in a row with Rangers

Here is a couple of quotes from a Celtic site
'A member of arguably Celtic’s greatest ever forward line (Bennett, McMenemy, Quinn, Somersand Hamilton) "
' Adored by the Celtic supporters (well at least until he joined Rangers)'
'According to one source, Alec did seem to have his differences with Celtic, not only having an uncertain relationship with manager Willie Maley but, as a non-Catholic, feeling uncomfortable with the decidedly pro-Catholic ambience prevalent at Celtic Park at that time '
