Celtic ‘must issue full apology’ over paedophile scandal - Russell Findlay, the Scottish Conservative justice spokesman.

Sadly cannot see any other media organisation being as truthful or as critical.

Celtic ‘must issue full apology’ over paedophile scandal.

Russell Findlay, the Scottish Conservative justice spokesman, accuses club of compounding the pain of victims with protracted legal battle.

Celtic FC must apologise for harbouring a paedophile ring and delaying justice for individuals who suffered “unimaginable horrors” while under their care, a senior MSP has said.

The Times disclosed on Monday that the Parkhead club were poised to pay multimillion-pound damages within months after agreeing to settle legal claims over systematic child abuse at their feeder club.

More than 20 former players at Celtic Boys Club joined a class-action legal action which has now been put on hold to allow individual compensation packages to be assessed.

Russell Findlay, the Scottish Conservative justice spokesman, has called on the senior club to issue an unequivocal apology over its handling of the scandal. “Youngsters who lived for football suffered unimaginable horrors at the hands of this paedophile ring, yet their pain was cruelly compounded by this protracted legal battle,” he said.

“For far too long, the club shamelessly denied abundant and incontrovertible evidence of deep-rooted connections with these abusers. While this reported settlement will be welcome, it should be accompanied by a sincere and unequivocal apology.”

Child welfare charities have also urged Celtic to accept responsibility.

“An apology or acknowledgement of the harm caused, is the most important action that Celtic Football Club can take to help survivors recover from their horrific experiences of childhood sexual abuse,” said Mary Glasgow, chief executive of Children 1st.

“We know from our experience of helping survivors recover from abuse that children are often made to feel they were responsible for the abuse they suffered.

“To fully recover from their horrific ordeal, survivors need a clear and heartfelt apology which acknowledges that what happened to them at Celtic Boys Club was wrong and that they are not to blame for it.”

For years Celtic insisted it was an entirely separate organisation to the boys’ club and, as such, argued it was not legally culpable for the abuse.

While opening negotiations with solicitors representing survivors, Celtic has not admitted any liability, despite four senior figures connected with the feeder club being convicted on multiple sexual offences against children.

The Scottish champions have now apparently abandoned their “separate entity defence”.

It comes after The Times published investigations which contradicted and undermined Celtic’s insistence that it had no formal links to the feeder club.

It found that Fergus McCann, the then managing director of Celtic FC, had declared that the boys’ club was the “basis of the entire Celtic pyramid”. He made the comments in April 1996, days before calling in the police to investigate growing claims of sexual abuse.

A decade earlier an internal Celtic FC investigation cleared the boys’ club staff and concluded the allegations deserved to be “buried once and for all”.

It also emerged that Celtic funded the boys’ club and employed the predatory paedophile Frank Cairney, who ran the feeder team between 1974 and 1991.

Jim Torbett, who was jailed three times for molesting boys after Jock Stein, then the Celtic manager, granted him permission to launch and lead the club in 1966, ran Celtic’s chain of shops selling official merchandise and organised testimonial functions for first team players.

Both Cairney and Torbett have served multiple jail sentences after being found to be prolific paedophiles.

In 2019 Jim McCafferty, a former boys’ club coach and Celtic kit man, was jailed for six years after admitting 12 charges relating to child sexual abuse. He died in prison in 2022, aged 76.

In 2018 Gerald King, a former chairman of the boys’ club, was convicted of abusing four boys and a girl.

Three other men with ties to Celtic and Celtic East Youth Club, a now-defunct feeder team in Edinburgh, have also been found guilty of serious offences against boys.

Thompsons Solicitors Scotland, which is representing the survivors, has been gathering evidence on each of the cases to present Celtic with amounts to pay for each individual.

It now expects that process to be completed by the end of the summer. “We are pleased to confirm that the process of valuing all individual cases has made significant progress in the last six months,” a Thompsons spokesman said.

“We do not yet have all necessary evidence to commence settlement negotiations and so the court has granted a further short sist [pause] of four months to allow opportunities to do so given the complexities of this task.”

Celtic did not respond to requests for comment. Last September the club said: “Celtic’s lawyers continue to investigate and discuss these cases with the lawyers acting for those who suffered abuse at Celtic Boys Club. Those discussions are ongoing.

“It would not be appropriate for Celtic Football Club to comment any further while there are ongoing legal proceedings.”
Humza Yousaf should be asked at First Minister’s Questions if he agrees that this should be the case. I think it’s important to hear what the head of the Scottish Government thinks about this as he has enough to say about anything when it suits him.

You know they will say that the Scottish Govt supported the SFA report on non recent child abuse but, that was a total cop out and didn't focus on Celtic who are One club that are linked to so many paedophiles working for them and so many counts of child sexual abuse which ruined lives and which robbed families of their children. There are also the children who as adults couldn't cope with the metal trauma of the abuse they suffered at the hands of the bheasts at Celtic and turned to drink or drugs or sadly committed suicide all due to not being able to cope with the mental anguish and trauma of their suffering.

There has to be a campaign for the SFA to have sanctions imposed as what is it saying about us in this country and our game if we just brush over the level of child sexual abuse and paedophile ring at Celtic Park? Its morally corrupt to do nothing!

This is just an idea but, could all of us with social media share the articles from the Scottish Express and (or) The Times and also share the documentary from Adrian Goldberg

There is no other organisation that would get away with this level of abuse and be able to deny and deflect away from any responsibility, that’s is except the Catholic Church how apt.

Imagine living in a society where an institution guilty of such crimes has to be called for to make an apology for ruining so many young boys lives.
Tbh mate, their religion has being doing this for centuries and are still the largest Christian religion to this day. Cover ups, moving priests quietly on to another flock to repeat their crimes.

An absolute mystery how it has survived so long. Shows to me the power the Vatican actually has.

If that’s what he says, then it’s a long winded way of saying ‘no’.

Found the article and its interesting to note that again it was Russell Findlay that spoke up back in 2023 about this

Celtic Boys Club: Scottish Government rules OUT public inquiry after ninth conviction of perv connected to club

Campaigners and victims have called for action from the Scottish Government who have confirmed they are not looking at further investigations into the abuse scandal

The Scottish Government has said it will not launch an inquiry into the Celtic Boys Club abuse scandal despite calls for an independent review. It has also ruled out looking at bringing the victims into the scope of the Scottish Child Abuse Inquiry, originally launched to address the historic abuse of children in care homes.

Fresh calls for outside intervention comes after the ninth conviction for child abuse of someone connected with the club. Former scout Kenneth Divers became the latest offender to be convicted after he was found guilty of sexually abusing four pupils while he was a teacher.

Campaigners at Spotlight called for Scottish Ministers to get involved. It said: "Nine paedophiles have now been convicted from Celtic FC/Celtic Boys Club yet the Scottish Government sees fit to leave this out of the Scottish inquiry into child abuse. The victims of abuse deserve better and have been badly let down by the Scottish Government."

Following the latest arrest, Scottish Conservative community safety spokesman Russell Findlay said he wanted to see Celtic Boys Club included in the Scottish Child Abuse Inquiry. He said: "I hope the civil courts will bring accountability and redress."

He added: "But surely with so many men who were linked to the boys' club now convicted of vile crimes against kids, the SNP Government and Scottish Child Abuse Inquiry must give serious consideration as to what scrutiny can be rightfully applied to this."

The Scottish Government has knocked back the suggestion, stating an SFA investigation has already "acknowledged the significant physical and mental harm caused to individuals". They also pointed to the removal of the three-year "time-bar" for those seeking criminal damages for the abuse they suffered.
Alternatively, a judicial review has been suggested by some. Gordon Woods, a victim of abuse at Celtic Boys Club, said he wanted to see a judicial review "free from any control of the SFA and Scottish Government". He branded a previous SFA report a "whitewash".

The Scottish Government told the Scottish Express: “Our sympathies are with the victims of historical abuse.

“The independent Review of Sexual Abuse in Scottish Football, commissioned by the Scottish FA Board to examine what was known about abuse in Scottish football in the past and what actions were taken as a result, acknowledged the significant physical and mental harm caused to individuals and the need to ensure the safety, rights and wellbeing of children involved in football today.

I’m sure you’re probably correct in your thinking. That’s an interesting article which I recall reading at the time it was published.
I do think that Yousaf should be asked a very specific ‘yes/no’ question as to whether or not he thinks Celtic should issue an unreserved apology to the victims. If he refuses to give a specific, clear, unambiguous answer, he should be hounded until he does.

I totally agree with you, he certainly should be asked but, he is a slimy weasel

He certainly is. What actually annoys me is the lack of someone in the other parties who is strong and quick witted enough to call him out and expose him for the lying, racist rat that he is.
In footballing terms, he constantly offers up open goals but there’s no striker good enough to take advantage.

Martin Henry is in need of a review himself.

He even fails the visual.

The compliant media in this Country are a disgrace to their profession they are not real journalists you can add them to the list of shame .
Could they perhaps be involved?
Like yourself, I struggle to get my head around their silence.
They disgust me and often it's hard knowing that I have to breath the same air.

Tax avoidance schemes still aren't illegal as such. They either achieve their aim (of nullifying or reducing the amount of tax paid) or they don't. Our particular tax avoidance scheme (EBTs) was eventually proved in court not to work, so Rangers had to pay HMRC the tax on them. But nobody was ever charged, as we committed no crime.

Hopefully the SNP will be gone in the coming GE, it's Labour who will replace them. This is where the pressure must be brought to bear for a public inquiry followed by sporting sanctions, for bringing the game into grevious disrepute.

Where is SPORTING INTEGRITY now, Rangers were punted down to the basement of Scottish football, for the the sake of the poor kids that were abused by a football club run by perverts, Celtic should be thrown out of football altogether, If it came to a vote of all Scottish football clubs absolutely nothing would be done, it's only Rangers that are hated in this sorry excuse of a country. WATP
We have to go after them, the way they went after us.Sporting integrity, after all!! What titles, cups are being taken off them, demotion, points deduction. They might not have had as many sponsors if this was common knowledge outside of Scotland. We have to make that vile club and it’s fans pay for this.I sometimes wonder if what happened to Rangers in 2012 was to deflect attention away from them.

What about a nationwide TV Documentary shown at peak viewing times (along the lines of the Post Office scandal ) for a few weeks so the whole of Britain and beyond can see what happened and how its been covered up for years .
Just retweet this all over social media under the Story from The Times

Forget apologies, we all know they would be hollow non apologies of the "Sorry for your experience" type
There must be a full public enquiry with powers to compel witnesses to attend
There ought to be prosecutions for those who aided this abuse either by actions or allowing others to abuse without reporting
It is not credible to believe that there was such a coincidence to have so many offenders acting independently. An organised ring would be a much more likely, effectively conspiracy to criminal behaviour

Its disgusting that they think they can cover this up and make it go away. I hope posters are using their social media to share and retweet the articles from The Times and share the documentary from Adrian Goldberg which is below

That should have started the ball rolling but it ground to a halt.
