Chesterfield manager suspended pending investigation over serious allegations

Chesterfield manager James Rowe has been suspended pending investigation over serious allegations according to reports on Monday.

The Spireites are currently top of the National League with half of the 2021/22 campaign played – sitting on 47 points from 23 games played.

Rowe was appointed as the club’s manager in November 2020 and guided them from the National League relegation zone to the playoffs.

He signed a new contract back in March, tying him down to the club until summer 2024 after bringing in him from Gloucester City, which he also got them flying higher before departing.

CLUB STATEMENT:

Chesterfield FC can confirm that James Rowe has been suspended pending an investigation into allegations of misconduct.

Danny Webb will take charge of the team.

As the matter is subject to an investigation, the club is unable to make further comment until that investigation is complete.

Charlie Walden has said via his Twitter account:

Regarding the James Rowe situation: spoke to a credited person just before the announcement. This is what he/she said: “I won’t go into specifics but this has been coming for a while now. James’s lack of decorum and respect for certain members of staff is clear.” #Spireites 1/2
Shouldn’t expect anything further until after Eastleigh game in terms of announcements and decisions but, no doubts Danny Webb is more than capable. #Spireites 2/2

It’s not the first time he has been in trouble as in 2015, the Daily Telegraph revealed that then-West Ham assistant Academy director James Rowe was disciplined by the club following complaints about his treatment of young players.

He worked with children as young as nine has been ordered to undertake awareness training following an internal investigation by West Ham, the outcome of which was backed by the Football Association.

The Telegraph claim they received an anonymous letter purporting to be from a parent containing several allegations about the conduct of 31-year-old Rowe, who joined the club from Birmingham following the appointment of Terry Westley as academy director last summer.

A West Ham spokesman said: “Following an internal investigation, a member of the club’s academy coaching staff was found to have demonstrated poor practice during his work.

“At an impartial hearing, he was then disciplined in line with the club’s standard procedures.

“As part of the outcome of that process, he has agreed to undertake further awareness and development training to help improve his performance.”

Twitter users reacted in surprise with the Chesterfield manager suspended pending investigation over allegations…

@Cian_1997
: CLUB STATEMENT: We would like to remind everyone that we scored against the European Champions

@OffTheLineBlog: Huge blow for #Spireites – especially at a time when collective focus is key as we starting entering the crunch point of the season. They will have to hope they can sort everything out quickly, else that could be season-defining in terms of pushing for the #NationalLeague title.

@TomPike21: Well… time to announce Pete Wild then I suppose!

@Will_Spireite: Whatever has happened we got to still believe, Danny Webb has also helped get this team to where it is now so why can’t we go and win the league with him given James Rowe isn’t manager in the future? Not ideal at all but we have to believe!

@DarranPearce: Again this is no great surprise to read this given what I have heard about him in the past. The bloke has always come across as a horrible man

@hollybaconnn: It is never, ever dull supporting this football club.

@bigdaver84: Sheridan should have waited before going back to Oldham

@jhowes17: Was James Rowe managing the team and Twitter account and his Tweets have amounted to gross misconduct?

@luke_gorman14: Well this doesn’t look too great does it, often no smoke without fire

@welshmantom: Sadly couldn’t put him on furlough to pay his wages whilst being investigated.

@spireriteblue39: This doesn’t look good does it?? Guess time will tell. Fingers crossed that it isn’t as bad as it seems

@JB_Allen: What the %^*& has happened here then? Could send Chesterfields season into turmoil.

@hoskin_liam: Wow. January and top of the league and then a few bad results and this. Could be anything but I can’t think we would suspend him for something lightly. Could derail our season if we have to look for a new manager.

@libertineben: Chesterfield lose to Maidenhead then next week manager is suspended, really does make you think

@RyanBates14: Absolute fucking marvellous that’s promotion out the window!!!

@RedBlueAndy: It’s happened again…… ’Something’ happened here at Shots when he was assistant to Gary Waddock……. Allegedly

@AllThingsCounty: Chesterfield in crisis, surely Halifax can’t keep it up, Bromley always on the brink of losing their manager, Wrexham and Notts are too inconsistent. It’s a County/Boreham Wood title race

@Easters86: Well there’s a shock. Bloke is a grade A prick

@Mike_Ellsmore: What on earth has gone on here?? Fucking great for us like but this is bizarre. To suspend your manager when you’re top of the league it must be something serious

@SpireiteFitzy: Oh f**k. Last thing we want is the manager suspended. What’s gone on here?

@ASJD30: Things you didn’t expect to read, ever

Some of the twitter comments……..

Looks like he is already a “concern” for their supporters

i've read the above but am no wiser as to what he's meant to have done. was he shouting and bawling at kids? treating the club staff poorly? anyone know?
