Chris Sutton has written Steven Gerrard's Rangers team talk for him after James Tavernier criticism

Cards on the table. I like Chris Sutton.
He speaks plenty of sense but sometimes, as a columnist who needs to provoke a reaction, he goes over the score.
And suggesting James Tavernier is a serial loser, is seriously over the score.
Tavernier may not have had the silver-laden career big Chris enjoyed. Then again, he wasn’t lucky enough to be Henrik Larsson and Alan Shearer’s wing man.
But I’d bet my bottom dollar, the vast majority of footballers up and down the country would sign for Tavernier’s career. Arriving at Ibrox as an unheralded right back from Wigan in a £200,000 deal four years ago,
Tavernier could easily have come and gone in the manner of some of Mark Warburton’s signings. Harry Forrester, Matt Crookes, Rob Kiernan and Josh Windass spring to mind.
And when Steven Gerrard arrived - a guy who knows a thing or two about leadership qualities - he immediately made the right back his club captain.
Following in the footsteps of the likes of John Greig, Richard Gough and Terry Butcher is a heavy responsibility and Tavernier has worn the armband with assurance and no little class.
For an English fella who had no affiliation to the club as a kid, he’s grown to understand the significance of the captaincy at a club that has such a massive support spread all across the globe.
He gets on with the job of representing it with a quiet assurance and is rarely, if ever, knocked out of his stride.
When the Hibs ‘supporter’ jumped on to the Easter Road track to have a go at him back in March, did Tavernier make a meal of it? No, he gave the thug a shove back and got on with it.

As recently as Wednesday night when an Aberdeen lout lobbed a pie at him, scoring a direct hit, all Tavernier did was turn round and glare at those in the vicinity for a split second then carry on with his business. No histrionics, no theatrics, just a guy trying to get on with his job.
And he’s good at it. For a serial loser, he’s VERY good at it.
He’s worn the Rangers armband 101 times in his career and lost only 15 times. That in itself isn’t bad but his record in recent times is exceptional. In his last 35 games as captain, Rangers have lost just twice.
Tavernier’s problem, hell the rest of Scottish football’s problem, has been Celtic’s utter dominance. If he is a serial loser, then so is every other footballer in the land who doesn’t pull on a Celtic top over the past three seasons, because nobody else has won a thing that matters.
He’s not the best defender in the world and he certainly went through a dip earlier in the season when high profile errors against Young Boys of Berne and Hearts at Tynecastle cost his team vital goals.
But the mistakes in the deficit column are far outweighed by the positives in an attacking sense where he already has nine assists this season on top of his three goals.
Last season, he scored 17 times from right back and while most were from the penalty spot, they still have to be converted and that’s not always easy as his three misses from 12 yards this term testify
He doesn’t get sent off. He’s hardly ever injured. He doesn’t fall out of nightclubs at all hours in the morning. He doesn’t appear on the front pages.
And he doesn’t deserve to be called a serial loser.
Then again, big Sutton might just have done him and his club a huge favour.
Branding Tavernier - and the rest of the Rangers team by association - serial losers has written Gerrard’s team-talk for him.
Players shouldn’t need any extra motivation in a cup final, particularly in an Old Firm cup final, but Tavernier and Co have just been given one.
And if Tavernier finds himself holding the trophy up into the Hampden sky on Sunday, he could be forgiven for turning it in the direction of the BT Sport pundits’ area.

I hope he has.
We need every single Ranger who crosses that line to give every single ounce of energy to bring that trophy home.
Tav will have visualised lifting it many times. Make it happen.

Some very good points there from Ferguson but the need to play pals with that mob at the same time "I like Chris Sutton" is something I'll never understand.

You may like Chris Sutton but I'll guarantee Chris Sutton thinks you're a piece of shit.

Barry, they HATE us. Get that into your skull. Their entire lives revolve around trying to damage us.

I hope Tav rams it down that fúckers throat tomorrow.

To be fair he has a point. Tavernier needs to lift something pronto otherwise he should be sold.

It's not a Barry Ferguson column.

It's an opinion column from David McCarthy

Ferguson?

Its David McCarthy.

Tav may not be a major trophy winner yet but at least when he does lose he does so with good grace. Compare and contrast that to Mutton's utterances when losing a major title. Utterances by the way that should have seen him nowhere any media job commenting on this great game of football.

Sutton isn't the disgrace though, it is the media outlets that gave him a platfrom when he had abrogated his rights to comment on football. I can only assume he has some influencial friends helping him out with his bankrupcy problems but we really shouldn't give a fuck what he says good, bad or indifferent.

Only thing I would love is if it was him who had to hand Tav over the cup on Sunday would love to see his face

An excellent article and I thought Captain Tavernier was articulate and confident in his pre-match press conference, (contrary to the nonsense written by the mushroom eaters), who was very careful not to say anything that would make sensational headlines.

Yep, my bad. Wrong Record article. Got them mixed up

Ferguson wrote this.

I don’t know Chris Sutton too well but he’s someone I had huge respect for as a player and it’s the same now as a pundit. He played at a high level and you have to respect his opinion.

At the end of the day what he is stating a fact when he says James Tavernier hasn’t won a major trophy. And the only thing James Tavernier can do in response to being branded a loser is to win something. It’s simple.

Sutton is a bankrupt who ot him self sent off in a game against us .he is also a man who accused another scottish team of lying down to rangers while himself and his team mates tried to get the killie keeper to let in goals. So tell me who in life is a serial loser.

Tavernier is a gentleman both on and off the pitch and he doesn't spit on members of the public when they pass a remark that he dislikes. Nor as far as I am aware does he have a criminal record for spitting/assault. Now that seems like a loser's behaviour to me, eh Sutton.

Your post title assumes anyone connected to the team gives a %^*& about what Sutton says.
SG doesn't need the likes of Sutton as part of his team talk, but I hope Tav shoves his words down his throat and the gaffer is right,he doesn't deserve air time.

Simply can’t wait for Tav to lift that trophy to stick it down the throat of Sutton & certain posters on here.

If Sutton was just an ordinary guy and worked in job with lots of employees, he would be the guy everyone despised.

We all have worked with these types; snidey, opinionated, and always moaning about something or other. They are tolerated by their workmates, but they will never be part of something good. They are always on the outside, looking in.

Ultimately, these people are deeply unhappy and they know they will never be accepted as a friend by any normal well balanced person.

Sutton is a loser.

By that line of thinking John Greig should have been sold early in 1970 as he hadn't lifted anything since 1966. It's hardly Tavernier's fault that the club were in such an almighty mess most of the time he's been here. The club as a whole need to start winning again, not just one man.

Sutton the man who accused a whole team of 'lying down' and also deliberately got himself sent off in a match. Yeah, his opinion counts.

Also he ambushed Derek Johnstone at Radio Clyde SSB and had the audacity to call DJ a Rangers Cheerleader. This piece of vermin obviously doesn't understand the word Irony.

By the way that incident on SSB was a shamefull act of cowardice and disrespect by DJ's fellow panelists as they stitched him up.

I'm aware of the irony posting this, but Sutton is an irrelevance. None of our players need anymore motivation to beat the scumbags tomorrow. We know what we need to do. Lets go and win.

I’ll tell you one thing about Tav, he’s played in some horrendous OF games, but never once been cowardly enough to deliberately get himself sent off just to get off the park.
Very true.
He has also yet to ask an opposition player not to try so hard or accuse another club, not a player like a diver, a club, of lying down to another.

Didn’t realise this was Ferguson’s column.
Or is it?

I’ve missed what the scum are saying.
Where are the comments?

All Tav needs to do tomorrow is to play like he did for the first half hour on Wednesday for the whole game. Don't let an arsewipe's desperation for relevancy cross your mind, Captain.

You’ve agreed with him.
How is that not backing him?

I agreed with the poster Rodwallace in my original post , not Sutton .

I don’t think tav is captain material , I never have . But I’ll be fcuking delighted to see him lift that trophy tomorrow and happily eat humble pie

No but, it’s a wee bit that tells the players what the other side think of you.
If that gives them even the slightest boost, it’s worth noting.

%^*& me! Complete and utter disappointment in Ferguson. Why are our ex players so intent on running us down in various capacities! If half of them actually stuck up for us once in a while the media might not seem as bad!

You're a troll. 100%. Noticed more than one post recently.
Just a realist. I stated weeks ago this squad lacks character. Why did this team draw with the sheep 2-2 after leading 2-0 at the weekend? Lack of character.

We are in need of urgent silverware. I actually believe we are in a good place to compete tomorrow. I would be delighted to see Tavernier hoist the league cup above his head tomorrow.

But if it doesn’t happen and we miss out on more silverware then sell him. Simple.

This is Gerrard’s second season and we need trophies this season.

Sutton trolling us today on BT - 'hupe the good guys win'.
So do we, ya diving, cowardly, unprofessional (red -v- us), abusive (restaurant & kids match), bankrupt Liwewell cypher. Contrast with our polite, professional captain.
