Commentator Alan Green interview in The Times

Is that five live stopped that shite of having two main commentators doing the same game? Always thought it was a waste of money, but that’s the bbc

Barry Davis best of English commentators for me in terms of drama...motson more popular but Davis came up with best lines,
Maradona against England...”you have to say that’s magnificent”
Argentina knocking out Brazil in 1990....”and Caniggiaaaaaa.....scores!”

best commentator about at moment is bbc radio guy that does the boxing
Mike Costello?

Got stuck into Rangers fans for sectarianism on an OF commentary years ago.

Interesting. He got an interview with Souness once, and GS said the only reason he gave did it was because Green was a Rangers man - Green quickly corrected him that his father was a Rangers supporter.

Why should the target only be a younger audience? And who’s to say that a young audience can only listen to someone of a certain age?

They think that younger listeners aren't listening to radio, and i particular 5 Live, which was seen as having a more middle aged demographic and didn't attract 20 somethings. So Sportsweek and the Friday sports panel have been replaced by excruciating stuff like Laura Whitmore and Ellis and Jon

No great fan of Green. Not a hater either.

There are some decent commentators out there. Fletch on BT is OK. Mowbray and Wilson at Beeb.

Just a shame we get the guff like Crocker, Maclean and Liam McLeod.

I couldn't quite believe it when I heard him for the first time, he seemed to be deliberately trying to ruin the game because he didn't like it.

Probably the worst commentator I have ever heard.

I have never met him but he seems to consistently come across as an objectionable old twat.

As for Fergie, he's been doing horrible things to decent people for decades, not one of life's good guys if you aren't in his circle. Still a legend.

Lost all respect for him when he tried reinventing himself as English when discussing an up coming euro championship or World Cup.
Referred to England as “we”.
I was straight on the phone to 5 live to challenge him but never got on.
Nothing against England but no Belfast man should be doing that.

Pretty much how I feel about him too. Seems embarrassed to be from NI so pretends he is English instead.

He has a point about how 5 Live has gone though. I want to hear the analysis of experienced former top players, not someone who played women's football.

To be honest, I've always found his commentary to be self centered, as if he was as much a protagonist as the players in the pitch. He always comes across as being far too self important, he could have done with someone telling him a few home truths years ago.

I hope he enjoys his retirement, or whatever he's planning to do now. But personally, I won't miss him.

You‘ve summed up my thoughts perfectly so no need for me to write it, thanks :)

Radio 5 has avoided the worst of the woke bollocks up until now.

But their football show “the squad” on a Sunday lunchtime is one of the biggest piles of dung ever to be broadcast.

I remember reading about Green a number of years ago I can't remember who it was that wrote the article but he wasn't kind on Green and apparently Green was not like amongst the football fraternity.
cost the BBC a fortune as he had to get seperate flights everywhere because he refused to travel with other staff.

His contract isn't being extended beyond state pension age. Welcome to the experience of the vast majority of the country.

All these “new age” commentators on bbc are told one thing.....hype it up and shout as loud as you can....it’s a big turn off for me as is the over the top analysis by studio pundits...not to mention the ridiculous questions players and managers are asked by interviewers

I recall Alan Greens father Billy many years ago at a Linfield agm raising the subject of Linfield signing a Roman Catholic. He was lucky to get out unscathed.
Pomposity runs in the family.

He is an absolute mug and every game is on his terms with zero interest in the listener

Quite the worst commentator I have ever come across. Worse, he was the 'inventor' of not telling you what was happening on the pitch preferring to pontificate and offer up opinions whilst the action was going on (he has a pundit at his side who can do that during breaks in play). Unfortunately many other commentators have adopted this method that leaves the listener clueless as to what is happening in the game itself.

In short, he helped ruin art of radio commentating. There used to be a select few who were excellent at this 'profession' but they are long gone.

Im sorry but David Begg was a Rangers hating lady's front bottom.

Alan Green has an over inflated ego, 67 years is a decent shift.

Begg didn't like us but I'd still rather listen to him than Liam "my balls haven't dropped yet" or Rob "my dog always dies when Rangers score" McLean

such a shame we can't have proper Sportsound nowadays when there was banter between opposing fans but not the hatred there is now and the agenda that the media have against us. Also better commentators such as Begg and Alastair Alexander

So much this. He was definitely at the forefront of football commentators suddenly being the moral arbitrators. We don't give a tit on your personal opinions, what's happening on the pitch? Just got away with it for years.
Excellent news he has been binned.

He used to sit with a stopwatch so he could take over from the other commentator at exactly the right time

Not much else to say about the man that hasn't already been said. More interested in his own opinion than the action on the pitch.

His commentary on the Drogba Penalty to win the European Cup for Chelsea is the most emotional you've ever heard him because Chelsea were his English team.

As far as I’m concerned Green was a man who knew his stuff.
Compared to the numerous nonentities and screaming harlots who masqueraders as commentators these days, he is legendary.
The BBC is a sewer pit of political correctness gone bonkers.
Come on Boris, time to end making non-payment of the licence fee criminal.

He used to be really good, then became self important. I don't like how the co-commentators emerged over the years, just talking bollocks without informing of the play. Radio 5 live do have some good commentators now. It is a pit they dropped Sportsweek from 5 live, I used to enjoy that informative programme, Gary Richardson the host.

I stopped listening to 5live when that dick Nicky Campbell blamed a rangers fan for decking Neil Lennon when the scum were playing Hearts. Seems nothing has changed at the Biased Broadcasting Corporation.

Not particularly a fan of Green, but he does make a good point
Losing expertise in many parts of TV coverage to make way for young men and women who know nothing, but can have a bit of banter
Thinking that is all young viewers want and it ain't

I was always irritated when he commentated on games. He was supposed to be there commentating, but spent more time opinionating.

Nice insight about his relationship with Mike Ingham. Gushes all over Mike "I said he’s been like my brother for all these years. I can’t say anything more to show how much I appreciate Mike"

And then finishes with "I am not in touch with him. It’s a delicate subject."

Another fall-out that wasn't his fault it seems....

After Fergie fell out with him he was then ignored by Fergie acolyte Sam Allardyce.
No surprise there as Allardyce did the same with Rafa Benitez.

Glad he lost the England job , fat crook.

The commentator refuses to have meals with Mark Saggers or even acknowledge his presence when they are side by side in the commentary booth. Green only talks to Saggers when the schedule demands dialogue between them on air.

The breakdown dates back to the Champions League final in Moscow last May, when Green, worried about his safety among Manchester United fans, was furious Saggers didn't leave Sir Alex Ferguson's post-match Press conference to escort him to 5 Live's transport 150 yards away.

Gordon Turnbull, head of 5 Live Sport, has witnessed Green's withering treatment of Saggers in a working environment, but, like the rest of the top brass, has done nothing about it.

Station boss Adrian van Klaveren gave a head-in-the-sand reaction to Green leaving it until 1pm to fly from Manchester for Saturday's 5.15pm kick-off. He declared the aircraft's mechanical problems were entirely out of the commentator's control and he was glad Green arrived in time to call the second half.

No wonder the 5 Live staff believe Green is a law unto himself.

He is 67 years old ffs. Does he think he is to be allowed to haver (a carefully selected verb) on-air for ever? He has a massive ego and has come to think that he IS the story. The game is the story and he is but a small part of it.
So Fergie, and Allardyce, ignored him for years. I am sure many people on this board have ignored or been ignored at some time. Always sounded to me like an arrogant know-all, more interested in spouting his opinions than actually commentating on the game.

Won't miss him for reasons stated countless times above but I doubt it would take much to have Fergie marginalise you.

On Lineker's latest podcast he brought up the subject of him not talking to Fergie for nearly twenty years (simply because he was a BBC employee) and went into his local restaurant to find Fergie in with a table full of company. Lineker walked over with his son and said "Good evening Alex" and offered his hand. He said Fergie shook it, said "hello" without taking his eyes off the company he was with!

Always thought he was a self-important arsehole. Also when discussing Gazza, he wrote "don't tell me about this achievements in Scotland - that's a second rate league".

How's the league of Ireland, you fat prick?

You'd think he'd be pleased. After all there wasn't a game I heard him commentate on where he didn't have something to moan about. The pompous arsehole.
