Cosgrove on Off The Ball ‘jokes’ that Richard Gough may not have been against apartheid in South Africa

On Scottish Radio it would probably fall under Scots Law which would make it defamation under ‘The Defamation and Malicious Publication (Scotland) Act 2021’
Have a read and avoid appearing to have no clue.
Have to say it’s a personal insult/insinuation that demeans our Captain. There‘s no mention of Rangers FC so it’s personal and unless he’s got some evidence to back the remark up then I believe your spot on.

Every single person condemning Cosgrove on this should complain to the BBC. It takes 5 minutes, no excuses.

Yep. A wannabe soul boy and casual. He would no doubt be on his toes when the Dundee fans used to dish out regular kickings on their trips through to Perth in the 70’s/80’s.

Done.

I don’t hear off the ball very often however on the occasion I do hear it in the car, Cosgrove always has a dig at Rangers at some point in the show. He is a bitter bastard.

Defamation of Past Captain Richard Gough

Cosgrove on Off The Ball stated that Richard Gough may not have been against apartheid in South Africa. Does he have any evidence to back up this defamation? Or is it just another bit of his narrow minded so called banter.

I hope that word of this gets back to Richard Gough and he sues Cosgrove.

His constant slur on The Rangers and anyone associated with our great Club in general does nothing to make me think that anything at BBC Scotland will change any time soon. It really is rancid.

If I was to speak about one of my clients or customers like that, I'd be sacked, and be open to some sort of court action.
Don't see why it should be any different in this case.

I think they might be on today as well. Think I caught that when I was checking yesterday's show on i-player, I don't normally listen to their shite.
I would be shocked if there's any apology, I really would.
It's disgraceful.

I think he will know now that he’s made an arse of it, be interesting if he does apologise, but it’s allready been said. Hopefully King Richard has instructed his lawyers.

It wasn't a joke Cowan was suspended for. It was a stunningly misogynist piece (see link) in the Record where he suggested that Fir Park be torched to 'cleanse' it after the Scottish women's team had played there...and there was plenty more jaw-droppingly hateful stuff in the article. Still genuinely stunned that this hasn't finished his career. It was only ten years ago and he's still showing his true colours in recent months bleating about sexism being a one-way street...in favour of women that is. If it was down to knuckle draggers like Cowan women's football wouldn't be going through the boom in popularity it's now experiencing. But as he explained afterwards he can't be sexist as his maw and wife are women. And we're supposed to be the bigots.

I do know Gough arrived at Dundee Utd as a kid feom SA with baggage of this sort.
His team mates helped to realign the boy.
Don’t be fooled by Cosgrove and his ‘hail fellow well met‘ patter.
A sinister, highly political and manipulative individual.
He is highly intelligent, a class one socialist hypocrite but very well educated and for decades was a very senior executive with Channel 4.
His motives in appearing on “Off the Ball” have always been questionable to me.
Could be wrong, maybe he wants to be on hand to quell any comments on him being arrested at Perth Railway Station for football hooliganism.
At least I think it was him, apologies if I’ve misremembered.
A Roman catholic simply can't be a socialist.

It's the biggest 'shettleston' propaganda out there, peddled for at least a century now.

When you want all power given to one man, both temporal and spiritual and one faith, it's the opposite of socialism.

I cant emphasise just how important this is.

If you have read this thread, and don’t put in a complaint then as a Rangers fan you are part of the problem.

Early in the thread we’ve had people question context, have a go at our board. All mental.

That’s a disgusting comment about one of our club legends, and we as a support have an absolute tap in to put pressure on and get suspended/sacked a prominent Rangers hating media figure.

Hate how the media seem infested with our haters who cozy up to that lot? You reckon Cosgrove would say that about a Celtic legend?

Now’s your chance, get a complaint submitted now. The more there is, the more they can’t ignore. The BBC should be dealing with thousands of complaints here.

The thing that gets me about all these Scottish right-on lefty types in the public eye - pop stars, actors, columnists and the likes of Cosgrove - is how none of them speak out about segregating kids at the age of 5.

They're really quite happy with sectarianism as long as the coverage is one-sided.

As ever, you are bang on the money.

It's just the utter p1sh I object to.

The snotter platoon and this, what is it, Antfica garbage.

It's one thing trying to delude other people but it's another thing entirely when you can succesfully delude yourself.

They are mentally diseased.

They can brush it off as a joke - plenty of Rangers fans have as well. However, it's not funny in the slightest and these kind of digs at Rangers and our ex-players/staff are a regular thing. He wants to make comments like that down the pub then fine, batter in. He wants to do it on a national broadcaster paid for by the public, perhaps not so fine.

Complaint logged

I think some of the stuff about solicitors is not going to happen. The best we can hope for is an apology and a reprimand from the BBC - make a complaint if you feel strongly about it.

I like Off the Ball, Cowan in particular is very funny. Cosgrove can be quite interesting but the fact is he hates Rangers and his comments were beyond the pale.

Very funny and interesting?
I'll take that for £500 please Stephen.
Ok...these 2 phrases have never been used to describe which radio programme?
Off the ball.
Correct you've won £500 on Jeopardy

I'll admit to liking Off The Ball and finding it quite funny, but that was a long time ago when I was in my teens (early - mid 2000s) and didn't know any better. Back then everyone got a slagging and it was fairly innocent. Now it's very vile and on this occasion highly offensive.

They're both pricks, but each to their own.

It was not a bad listen back in the 90's when it was just a big pisstake of Scottish football and nobody got upset.

I remember back then when it was coming out about the Celtic boys club scandal and one of them stated that the residents around the piggery could not get a picture on the telly due to inference at the piggery. They would not dare crack a joke like that now.

Anyway done my bit and fired in a complaint to the BBC, even if gets Cosgrove to apologise it will be better than nothing.

Imagine somebody - anybody - having the temerity to fire such an accusation, jokingly or otherwise, at one of the mhanky mhob's players/ex-players.
It just wouldn't happen, ever. It seems routine for it to happen to us, especially now in SNP-infested Scotland.
