D-Day - 6 June 1944

"Our landings in the Cherbourg-Havre area have failed to gain a satisfactory foothold and I have withdrawn the troops.
My decision to attack at this time and place was based upon the best information available.
The troops, the air and the Navy did all that Bravery and devotion to duty could do.
If any blame or fault attaches to the attempt it is mine alone."

The letter Eisenhower prepared should the D-day invasion fail.
Thankfully it wasn't needed.
 
My auld man was too young at the start of WW2 to be called up but, aged 17, started work in Orkney constructing the Churchill Barriers. He had as easy a war as you could think of.

His older brothers, Lachie and Alan, both served in the merchant marine with Alan being torpedoed twice on convoy duty and rescued from the drink each time.

His older sister Jean had trained as a nurse in Glasgow's Royal Infirmary and signed-up a few months after D-Day and served time in both France and Germany.
