FASHION Sakala has stated that he has no interest in leaving Rangers on loan after being linked with moves to Auxerre, Celta Vigo and Real Sociedad this summer.

However, the Zambian forward has revealed he is set to hold talks with his manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst in the coming days because he is uncertain about his future at Ibrox.

The 25-year-old joined the Glasgow giants on a free transfer from Oostende in Belgium last summer and netted 12 goals and provided 15 assists in all competitions in the 2021/22 campaign.

But he was mostly used as a substitute by Van Bronckhorst, who replaced Steven Gerrard as manager in November, and has been tipped to leave and get regular game time in recent weeks.

Sakala, who came on in the Europa League final in Seville in May, has stressed that he wants to remain in Govan and will have discussions with the Dutchman in the coming days.

“Obviously I am very happy to be here,” he said. “All this talk about loans? I don’t think I can go on loan. I am not looking at loan moves.

“There is no need for me to go on loan because my first season was not bad. I scored 12 goals in all competitions and that was my adaptation season. Now I have to prepare myself to do better this season.

“If I hadn’t got the chance last season or if I had not scored a single goal then I would have said: ‘Okay, I need to make a move, I need to go’. Because for me, I can be here at this big club, but if I am not playing then it does not mean anything.

“Last season was okay. It could have been better, but I was mostly on the bench and coming all the time is difficult. I think players understand that to do so is not easy. When you do that, the game is on another level and rhythm is not the same.”

Sakala added: “I haven’t had a meeting with him (Van Bronckhorst), but I think they had a meeting with my manager and he said he wants me, he wants me to be part of the club.

“I am expecting a meeting any time soon and I hope to hear his views. This is something I am looking forward to because we are starting a competition and I want to know where I am standing because I don’t know at the moment.”

Van Bronkhorst, who has strengthened his squad with Welsh winger Rabbi Matondo and Croatian striker Antonio Colak this summer, told Sakala last season after he arrived that he will mostly be used out wide.

The forward has since tried to adapt his game.

“When I came here for Gerrard I was told not to be a winger,” he said. “I can also play as a winger, but I was told to play as a No 9. Those were the reasons why I came.

“I had games with Gerrard. I think since I came here I have played three games in a row where I played 90 minutes. Then when he left I knew the formation would change.

“Back then, I already had some doubts. But when Gio came we had a meeting and he told me that for him I am not going to play as a striker because he likes big strikers.

“That is something I respect because every coach has views about the players. Now I am being told to play more as a winger which is something I have to work on. I am working on it, but I am not really a winger, I am more like a speed striker.”

Van Bronckhorst only has one fit striker in Colak just now because Alfredo Morelos and Kemar Roofe are working their way back to fitness after injuries. However, Sakala does not believe that he will feature regularly in his favoured position in the long-term and is focusing on improving his wing play.

“Alfredo is not yet fit, Roofe is not yet back so I start thinking maybe this will be my chance to play as a striker,” he said.

“But Alfredo is the main player of the team, he is like a superstar. When he comes back then what would be my position?

“All of these questions come into my thinking. I don’t know if I should be preparing just in case Alfredo is not in the squad or should I prepare for the whole season?

“Because when he comes back I am not going to be counted as a striker. So I have to prepare myself for a position where I will be playing the whole season.

“So even if they aren’t back I am not viewing myself as a striker. I just want to work on the positions where I feel like I might get chances to play.

“Because we have Colak, we have Roofe and we have Alfredo. These are the strikers that we have. If I put myself there then I will be the fourth option. So I don’t want to pressure myself thinking I am a striker.”

Very candid where was this interview?

I’d be happy to see him move on, I don’t think he knows what he will do for one moment to the next and you cant manage round the unpredictable.

12 goals 7 assists in his debut season, playing in a few positions was a very decent return! I like him, not sure Gio is massive fan

There’s an old saying …”lies, damn lies and statistics”

It’s very applicable

The stats you quote are impressive. But they don’t tell the whole story.

Torbett Towers in May comes to my mind. Sakala is ineffectual. Infact he’s a headless chicken.

Then he scores a great goal an equalises.

Is he going to be good for Rangers? I’m not convinced. He’s capable of things, great moments….but his general play suggests he’s not great

He is surely going unless he's on a small wage and we can carry him as a backup. The wing is his best bet at playing but you'd have to assume with the way Matondo has started he's going to play there and Kent is nailed on too and likely to extend his contract. Can see him being sold once Alfie is back fully fit

He’s getting loaned out..

He doesn’t fit, nice guy but just lacks what we need

Cheap squad player doesn’t marry with him turning down EPL and Ligue 1 sides either, he made himself sound like a bigger wage than some seem to want to accept

True mate, he was horrendous in the first half! Was inches away from a second in that game also! I think he may well move on! Not on massive wages, more than decent first season, think he deserves another season

He’s an odd player.

Can produce moments of brilliance then be utter shite for the rest of the game.

Poor passing and ball control.

It really is up to Gio but there’s something I like about him. Got a knack for popping up and doing something.

I agree with everything you say. He was truely dreadful in that first half at Torbett towers. Then he produced that moment in the 2nd.

Certainly a good option to have but not one id want to rely on

Can't really disagree with anything he said really. He's not going to any as a striker for us but should get time as Kent's understudy

A decent squad player though? If Matundo starts every game and produces the numbers Sakala has i think most would veiw that as a decent return!

What use is he as a squad player if he isn't getting on the pitch? He's clearly not getting a sniff at playing as striker for us, and he currently has Kent, Matondo and Wright ahead of him in the wide areas. Even Tillman was brought on to replace Wright before Sakala today.

If we're being honest the writing was on the wall when he didn't start in either of our finals last season behind Scott Wright, Diallo or an out of position Aribo. He doesn't seem to be a player the manager trusts & early signs this season point to him not being in his plans.

Love him to bits and he can produce magical moments, just don’t see him getting game time. Hope he gets what he’s looking for, with us or another club.

Where was this? Seems quite an honest interview.

Sakala absolutely deserves another season here to at least try and prove himself, obviously if it doesn't work out this season, we move on for a fee.

Ruthless, but it's where we should be now.

If an offer comes in, i think he'll be away! IMO he deserves another season, i'd have brought him on today, that fact Gio didn't probably tells a story

A reasonable bid and we should accept it - I like Sakala I just don't think he's technically good enough for us, Limited games we can play him in.

I think Gios assesment of him is correct. He doesnt seem a natural no9 to me, especially the way we play. He doesnt have the touch and the ability to hold a ball up with his back to goal. He could play as a striker in another league, where he can play on the shoulder of the last defender.

Shame if it doesnt work out. Hes a great squad player and he pops up with goals and assists a lot. Hopefully we can work something out with him, but i fear he might end up moving on now.

27 goal contributions? Can we afford to let that go? His finishing needs to improve but he’s got the desire and attitude, and the pace! Surely he can play a role in a 60 game season?

His minutes to goals ratio is a goal every 2 games it would be hard to replace that with another squad player coming in. With the amount of games we will hopefully play this season he's more than capable of playing his part.

I think Sakala and Borna will depart in this window.

And Roofe too - IF he can pass a medical elsewhere.

I'd also sell Wright. But realistically that won't happen

I fear we are in danger of forgetting we played a number of games at the end of last season with players playing positions they were less than adept at, Joe Aribo scoring in the Europa League Final with him as centre forward the most obvious example. However, earlier in the season we had Calvin Bassey at left centre back away to Sparta Prague and let’s not forget how truly awful he was. Came good as the season advanced and obviously made us lots of money.

I don’t think we should be letting, albeit perhaps fringe, players such as Fashion Jr go out on loan leaving us potentially short further into the season. How often have we seen plenty cover translate into enforced use of players out of their normal position. Let’s not do it again by sending such as Fashion Jr out on loan.

He’s a tremendous human being. I hope he stays here and plays a major part.
We need to stop assessing players by their personality. It has led to Itten, and to a lesser extent, Sakala having cult followings that are not merited by their performances.

Fashion has had decent performances and scored some important goals in the SPL, but he hasn't convinced me that he can do it in Europe against tougher opposition. I'd always wish him well but don't see him as player we would miss.

Turning down a decent loan move which could give him the regular start he says he craves doesn't make much sense to me. In fact he goes down a little in my estimation as it suggests he is happy to prioritise his ambition over the best interests of the club.
