Greg Stewart: Rangers will score goals in Braga - and I'd love the chance to face them

GREG Stewart has expressed confidence he can take over from suspended Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos in the Europa League rematch against Braga in Portugal next week and supply the goals which clinch a last 16 spot.

Morelos picked up a booking for dissent in the first-half of the first leg showdown against Ruben Amorim’s side at Ibrox on Thursday night and will miss the game in the Stadio Municipal de Braga this Wednesday.

However, the Colombian’s ban presents Stewart, who helped Steven Gerrard’s side come from two goals down against the Primeira Liga club to win 3-2 after coming on as a second-half substitute, with an opportunity of a rare start up front.
The 29-year-old has only been on target three times in the entire 2019/20 campaign, but his game time has been limited due to the form of Morelos and Jermain Defoe and he is confident he can justify his selection if Gerrard hands him a start
“You want your best players to be playing,” he said. “He (Morelos) will be disappointed he isn’t available, but I believe we have players who can step in if anyone is suspended or injured. If the gaffer needs me I am ready. It gives someone an opportunity to play.

“I think the Braga game showed we have strength and depth here. I have always felt we have had a great squad. When you get the opportunity when the gaffer calls you, you have to be ready. On Thursday I came on and the game went our way.
“You have to come in and train well and make sure you are ready when the chance comes along. In football you never know when the chance will come along. It isn’t easy watching, but everyone wants to play and the manager can only pick 11 players.”
The former Dundee, Aberdeen, Kilmarnock and Birmingham City player felt that Rangers enjoyed great success against Braga’s high defensive line and is convinced the Glasgow club can score over in Minho and go through.
“That was one of the criticisms of them (Braga), but we could have scored more goals ourselves,” he said. “Alfredo had a few chances and was unlucky not to take them. It was a game that could have been five or six each, with the chances each team had. I think we’ll definitely score over there.”
Rangers, who beat Celtic 2-1 at Parkhead at the end of December, have performed poorly domestically since play resumed after the winter shutdown and have fallen 10 points behind their city rivals in the Ladbrokes Premiership due to defeats to Hearts and Kilmarnock and a draw to Aberdeen.
But Stewart, speaking ahead of the league match with St Johnstone in Perth this afternoon, believes the win over Braga on Thursday has raised their confidence levels and will enable them to get back to their best.
“These sort of things happen in football,” he said. “Stuff like this can kick-start you again. But we can’t forget it’s only half-time and we now have another big game. There’s no room for any more mistakes.
“But the league is the bread and butter. Thursday night has gone and we need to be sure we’re ready. We realise we need to get the consistency back and go on a winning run. It’s something we need to do.
“We’ve probably been a bit sluggish in the league and gaffer talked about getting that spark back. To win from 2-0 hopefully gives us a boost and helps us going into the St Johnstone game.”

Their defence is there to be got at, shaky under pressure and dodgy on the ball at the best of times. Play positively like we did in the second half, by pressing properly and cutting out the silly errors and negative play that cost us at Ibrox, and we should really challenge them. They fell apart under pressure from the team and the stands. And im sure the thousands of us out there will make it like a home game for us. Braga aint known for big or intimidating crowds.

They were really good going forward, fast, strong, good movement. Need to be on the top of our game defensively.

I’d go the same but with Aribo in for Kent

I find it very tough to leave Aribo out but I really think pace in the front three is how we navigate this tie, and the midfield three I picked have more Dogfight imo.

My head says we'll lose the game by 2 goals, my heart says we're gonna win 2-1.

The ball over the top of Braga was working wonders. Morelos hold up play and play in behind will be a big miss. The next best thing we have for that is Kamberi.

You may be correct about pace, Jones was excellent vs midjtland as an out ball. Not suggesting we play him, but a performance like that is required.

4-5-1.

Hopefully Kamberi's pace will catch them on the break. Think we'll need to score at least one over there maybe 2.

But Thursday night as terrible as we were in the first 55mins the last 35 showed we can take them.

Their pitch too will suit us as much as them playing on a really decent surface again.

Let's get 3 points tomorrow though first.

Lose by just enough to get papped out. You need yer heid checked. 0-3 the famous. We will run all over the top of them got their number now.

I'd go with Kamberi but Stewart did really pretty well against Marseille up front, albeit a friendly.

He's much better through the middle than on the right anyway.

I don't think Greg is the answer against Braga. They'll want to come at us and put us away early - we need pace in the counter and grit in the middle. I'd go

McGregor

Tav Goldson Katic Barisic

Jack Davis Arfield

Hagi Kamberi Kent
I suspect Aribo will start.
It may well be at the expense of Kent who could make more impact later in the game.

Jones is not in the europa squad.

The manager sees barker and ojo as preferred options

Don't know what Stewart has to do to get game time. He's never played poorly and has had some really impressive performances. Just feels like the manager doesn't fancy him for some reason.

I'll admit I know less than those in charge but I'd have him every time against these packed defenses in the SPL.

Not sure he's the man for this particular away game in Europe though because he's not got incredible pace.

I would pack the midfield and play one man up front. The way to beat their defence is to play the ball in behind them and then beat them for pace. So, if I was the manager, I would play Kent as the lone striker in a 4-5-1 formation.

I just don't want a what could have been scenario. The Braga defence is there for the taking if we are brave enough. Stewart is correct. We'll need to score goals.

For long stages they looked out of our league but when the team got in about them and the crowd responded they shat their pants so who knows for the 2nd leg.

I hope I’m wrong but I get a feeling that Aribo may be needed to cover for Barasic which would mean Stewart could play further forward.

McGregor
Katic Goldson Edmunson
Tav Jack Arfield Aribo
Hagi
Stewart Kamberi

tThat would be my team. I actually really like Stewart he deserves more starts

Hopefully Kent is benched today, Let Stewart start in Perth. I would be tempted to let Kamberi start today so he’s properly up to speed. Give him 60 mins, same with Stewart and finish with Morelos and Kent coming on for the last half hour. Might as well keep Morelos fresh as we can for hearts next week as that game is huge for us and Kent needs to know he isn't a starter until his form picks up.

Quite simply braga are a better footballing team than us we cant just go toe to toe with them. Jack being back is a huge boost I doubt that 77 will get as much space around the box. We need to hit them on the counter with pace. Ok kent hasn't been in great form but without alfie he is our one outlet with pace so has to start.

I would start with Kent To keep the teams shape but if it’s clear he’s still not at it early on bring on Stewart.

They always had a spare man in attack though, so I’d like to see us go 5 across the middle somehow early on , with the ability to change it should we go behind.

Don’t play a “nine”.
Two forwards, both wide, support from midfield.
Possibly a good counter to three at the back.

Probably, but, so we’re Porto and possibly Feyenoord as well.

With the amount of space in behind I’d be tempted to play Kent up front. Having that pace could be crucial

Kamberi has got to start after his performance today, Stewart may play a part from the bench.
