He said: “A lot of people down here have been paying attention to the job Stevie has done because he’s done amazing.
“You’re talking about two massive clubs so there must have been pressure on him to turn things around for Rangers.
“You’ve got to give credit to Rangers for standing by him.
“They know they have a great guy running their club and they will have known that, eventually, he’ll come good. They’ve trusted him because they can see the job he’s being doing. They know they have a good manager in charge.
“You just need to look back to Fergie and his early days at Man United. They stuck with him when he was struggling and look what happened there.
“I don’t understand the way some clubs act these days. If you bring in a manager and you think they are good then surely you’ve got to give them time.

He said: “He’s recruited well and he made a great signing right from the off when he brought in an experienced man like Gary McAllister to be beside him.
“So Stevie’s done brilliantly but I didn’t really have any doubts he would, given the opportunity and the right tools to work with.
“That’s what it comes down to in the end, it’s as much about recruitment now as anything.
“Stevie has probably had more of a say in the recruitment up there than most managers have these days here in England.
“Listen to Jurgen Klopp the other day to see the difference. When they asked him if he was going to sign a centre-half he said signing players had nothing to do with him. It’s unbelievable. Maybe that’s another reason the Rangers job has been so perfect for Stevie.”
