Have we had an identity or proper style of play since Gerrard

Our 55 season was the last time we took to the pitch and had a real recognizable style of play.

All we’ve had since then is wee periods of bounces and improved results when a new manager comes in.

I’ve not heard anyone be able to articulate Clements tactics / style of play. The coaching has fallen off a cliff the last three years.

No. Gerrard gave us a swagger and made us feel like kings, like we should win every game. Now we feel like we do not deserve to be champions. And collapse.
Did he?

1 trophy out of 9.

Treble presented to us on a plate in the 55 season and we somehow blew both cups.

He looked like he was a dead man walking before covid hit.

His last season we were dropping points frequently.

There were plenty dismal domestic performances under him too.

Gios team had more a style in how they played where as Gerrard went more for control.

but Gerrard have them an arrogance they needed but he knew quality needed to improve to move forward

Gerrard team had done good results and games but were more a solid unit with team doing there jobs.

Gios team struggled against low blocks but when it clicked it was actually good to watch when it was bad it bad as well

Beale well enough said

Clement seems to have lost way a bit since Motherwell but in general we were looking good at points with the mess Beale created.

Sunday and tonight we'll there was nothing that resembled a style

No.

Gio was great at exploiting European sides but was too laissez faire with domestic football.

Beale was a shambles and doubt anyone could explain his approach, especially after signing his own players and having (if reports are correct) full autonomy over recruitment and signings.

Clemente arrived and installed simple things such as defending, pressing when off the ball and keep going forward at every opportunity. He had several inherited problems around, teamwork, fitness, injuries, quality and confidence. He managed to install confidence and teamwork whilst juggling with the other three main problems from game to game.

Clemente's never shied away from calling his problems a jigsaw. He's done well to piece many parts together, but in the end the right pieces are missing when the 'story' runs out of content due to quality and when options in key areas are not available.

Some of the revisionism over Gerrard’s time here is bordering on the ridiculous.

He had a presence about him, and gave us a bit of dignity back, but 1 trophy out of 9 is an unacceptable return, and the way he managed the CL play off defeat to Malmo before he bolted was pathetic.

We’d be lying to ourselves if we didn’t say Covid saved his job. Defeats to Kilmarnock, Hamilton at home, and Hearts in the Scottish Cup would have seen him off.

I’d argue we had more of a clear style under Gio. The way we played in the run to Seville is everything a Rangers team should be. Fast paced, aggressive, purposeful attacking football.

We're still playing the same basic system Stevie G had with a single centre fwd & wingers. It hasn't worked for years & every team is wise to it

When Clement arrived it seemed he would either play a 442 or 4231 based on his managerial history. The 4231 isn't working, we don't have midfielders good enough to play the holding role and the 3 behind the striker bar Sima don't contribute goals or assists.

He would be better giving his 442 tactics a go now as this looks to be heading one way. We aren't being undone by great tactics or outstanding displays at the moment. That's now 3 of the average teams in the league which have been able to contain us fairly easily.

The answer to your question OP is, Yes (unfortunately).
We had the Horseshoe style of play for quite some period of time.
And there’s been some evidence of it recently - different manager / same personnel

Our (non-existent) midfield is the key to the shaky defence and lack of creative play
I would be tempted to try 3-5-2 for a while…

No identity to our play and absolutely petrified of Celtic, something Gerrard wasn’t. He made them petrified of us in OF games, 8 wins in 13 against them. Since he left, we’ve beaten them in 1 game that mattered out of 12. Only other time was a meaningless game where Beale beat them after they won the title.

55 should’ve been the start under Gerrard but the board and Wilson let him down and that mentality he built getting that 55th title and beating Celtic constantly left with him.

Big Phil has a huge job on his hands
