Messi isn't particularly popular in Argentina, mainly down to the fact that he moved to Spain at 13 years old.
Yep, everything these days has become really tribal, from football teams, to football players, down to politics and even video game consoles, some are simply blinded to loyalty and will flat refuse to see or acknowledge anything else. There’s no denying how great he is but the whole fan club thing is overbearing. I support football teams not individual players.
Messi could spit on their granny and the virgins of social media would be going wild. “The greatest spit ever from the GOAT .”
Isn't Maradona seen as a sort of working class hero in Argentina? Obviously won them the World Cup but also played club football in Argentina as well?
Messi left Argentina as a boy.
Sorry, that’s just nonsense.
Not Everybody In Argentina Is Rooting For Lionel Messi
Lionel Messi is hated by many in his hometown.www.google.com
I think it's the only way you really can. People who grew up idolizing Pele are less likely to think that the next best player is better, and I'll probably be the same now with Mbappe/Halaand or anyone else who emerges as the best player in the world now that Messi/Ronaldo are on the way out.Why are folk comparing modern footballers to players from the 60s? Completely different sports. mental
There's also the argument that players are fitter, faster, tactically more aware and talent is far more concentrated now than it ever was in the past. The best players in the world in the past were potentially spread between Europe and South America. Now the best players are in Europe and you've got the occasional world class talent like Salah from Africa or Son from Asia as two examples off the top of my head that you might never have seen (outside of a tournament taking place every four years) if they were born 30 years ago.Very hard to say who is the greatest ever.
Messi and ronaldo have the best stats.
Maradona, old ronaldo played against better defenders in my opinion because defenders these days are either wing backs or just big shit bags who are threats from set peices.
Even players likes of puyol maldini are non existent no more.
Not completely. He went through a phase of not being flavour of the month as he was seen as being too spanish/catalan.Sorry, that’s just nonsense.
Pele would not have been mentioned without Taostao a great Brazilian midfielder and Garrincha who made a lot of Pele's goals,by the same token Messi who I still say was the best would not have been without the great Iniesta ,these players were as good as the men who fed them.ive seen them all but like all on here just my opinion.I've seen them also Maradona imo has no one above him but imo our very own George Best runs everyone very close
Yeah, done that to me a month or so back.skybet chat have admitted they're surprised it has not been overturned and have raised the issue with opta as they agree that it's a clear shot, they're laying the blame for not paying out squarely at Opta's feet
It’s from 2014 and suggests some supporters from his rival local team are jealous.
Come on.
I always wonder what guys like this think about players like Kirk Broadfoot. I mean, how many goals and records would he need to break before he thought - ‘aye that Messi is actually worth the praise he gets’.785 career goals.
Overrated.
The World Cup argument is so facile. Imagine if the best ever player, scoring a goal, two or a hat-trick every game was born in the Faroe Islands and had to contend with the other 10 guys being essentially amateurs. It'd be all the more remarkable if they did manage to win a World Cup but I doubt you could really hold it against him if they didn't.Pele would not have been mentioned without Taostao a great Brazilian midfielder and Garrincha who made a lot of Pele's goals,by the same token Messi who I still say was the best would not have been without the great Iniesta ,these players were as good as the men who fed them.ive seen them all but like all on here just my opinion.
Oh, oh, oh, it's Magic, Deboer, shitey posts and more.Pele won 3 world cups
Maradona won 1 World Cup
Messi won’t win a World Cup and neither will Ronaldo
Levels.
Dejected Messi booed by fans and frozen out by teammates
The player was confronted by defender Nicolás Burdisso after another disappointing Copa América performance.www.the42.ie
Might be from 2011, but a pretty decent quote from his father in it. A Copa America win may have won some Argentinians over, but he's nowhere Maradona in terms of popularity in Argentina.
Not sure how what I've said is nonsense.
Can’t see it, Mbappe is now better than himI’ve got him to win the Golden Ball (best player, not top goal scorer) at 10/1. That teenage mutant turtle looking lady's front bottom is going to win both isn’t he?
We had Bowie too.We won't see players like Messi again in our lifetime. The fact we had both Messi and Ronaldo at the same time is just wild.
Yes and I've seen them all also and as you say all of the the great players needed some behind them but never have I seen one player drag a team to World Cup glory the way Maradona did in 1986. Certainly he had good players in the team alongside him but not many can be classed as true greats of the gamePele would not have been mentioned without Taostao a great Brazilian midfielder and Garrincha who made a lot of Pele's goals,by the same token Messi who I still say was the best would not have been without the great Iniesta ,these players were as good as the men who fed them.ive seen them all but like all on here just my opinion.
Have you only started watching games with Messi in the last 2-3 years? They're different players. Maradona would drive at defences. Messi doesn't do that.
After Maradonajust like the 2014 tournament in Brazil, Messi is dragging this underperforming Argentina side along.
He came to within a extra time Götze winner of winning the World Cup on his own
Ronaldo would have been watching Messi tonight, Messi doesn’t watch Ronaldo
Greatest player to have ever kicked a ball
Diego will never die.Maradona's dead, mate. Do try and keep up
Standard of football overall is far higher and more difficult now though.
You are right in the respect of Maradona he did not have the feeder players that some of the greats had ,he had to do a lot himself but his lifestyle lost him a lot of his career.Yes and I've seen them all also and as you say all of the the great players needed some behind them but never have I seen one player drag a team to World Cup glory the way Maradona did in 1986. Certainly he had good players in the team alongside him but not many can be classed as true greats of the game
I am of his Generation and loved Maradona. However to say he is not at least close is delusional mate.Yeah its your generation.
It’s impossible to compare eras, there are just far to many variables, such as the quality of pitches, balls, boots etc, plus sports science, all making the modern game far quicker, but not necessarily better in a given era.The Maradona goal v England they showed pre match was like watching a game in slow motion
Messi is the best of all time.
I am off your generation. But to say he is not at least close is totally delusional mate.Maybe it's my generation, but anyone who thinks Messi is near Maradona, they deluded, sorry
I’ve got him to win the Golden Ball (best player, not top goal scorer) at 10/1. That teenage mutant turtle looking lady's front bottom is going to win both isn’t he?
Go to bed you nut job.Diego will never die.
Anytime someone sees a wee guy in a blue and white striped top Maradona lives on.
I don't think anyone's of the opinion that a guy from the 1870s is better than Messi is now. Granted it's good to argue the hypotheticals of it, but I think there is merit in saying the more modern players are playing in leagues and competitions with more concentrated talent. It’s impossible to compare eras, there are just far to many variables, such as the quality of pitches, balls, boots etc, plus sports science, all making the modern game far quicker, but not necessarily better in a given era.
Everyone has there favourites and that’s why threads like these can be fun, there’s no right or wrong answer, no matter how mental some people get defending whoever their favourite is.
