Matt Busby and Bill Shankly

The manager who people forget about is Don Revie, took a second division club from a rugby town and made them the best club side in the world for a period of time. A side that for the most part he nurtured from the youth team with a few relatively inexpensive additions. Admittedly they didn’t win all the trophies they should have done but there were reasons for that. The dynasty should have continued with John Giles being given the managers job, alas the clowns on the board went and got Clough, who without Peter Taylor was never going to survive at Leeds. Busby, Shankly, Paisley and the aforementioned Clough undoubtedly greats, but Don was up there but is forgotten due to his regrettable actions with England.
Leeds were never the best club side in the world, as good as they were they always failed to win the really big games when it mattered. The true great and best in the world win the top prizes on a regular basis.
Also Revie was underhand and devious with many allegations of bribery, one of which came from his own goalkeeper Gary Sprake

Revie(for me) definitely put together the best all-round team,in the era before money spoke.

That was never proven, all the allegations were made when the players had left the stage bar one against John Giles who if memory serves won a libel case. The top prizes you refer to often escaped Leeds but there were questionable refereeing in at least 2 major finals a d questionable decisions taken by the FA, like making Leeds play their final league game in 1972 on the Monday after the cup final v Arsenal on the Saturday, that was for a double. Alan Hardaker at the FA hated Revie and put as many obstacles in his way as he could. The club didn’t finish outside the top 4 for a decade, that my friend is a great club side.

No one is saying they weren't a great team but to state they were the best in the world is a by of a stretch. Allegations were made from various sources, not least Bob stokoe a man very much respected in the game. Great players, great team but a manager who had a reputation of being devious and underhand. Too many pointed the finger at Revie I doubt if they were all wrong

And they were all unproven, that in my book makes them innocent. Clough too was subjected to allegations that were unproven, it’s easy to sling mud not quite so easy to prove it.

Wilf McGuiness and Frank O'Farrell spring immediately to mind. Tommy Docherty was more successful but fell foul of Busby's strict moral code.

History seems to be repeating itself at Man Utd.

It took Ferguson, almost three decades on from Busby for that club to have a manager whose mental strength could handle the pressure.

Goodness knows how long it will take them to replace the ghost of Ferguson?
