RANGERS young guns Leon King and Josh McPake are undergoing gruelling, military-style, commando training in a bid to cement their place in Giovanni van Bronckhorst's first-team plans.

Scotland Under 21s defender King made his Ibrox breakthrough last season and is aiming to be a first team regular this season, after the departure of Leon Balogun.

The duo are being put through their paces

McPake has had several loan spells away from Rangers, but is determined to make an impact this season and force his way into the Europa League Finalists' squad.

The duo are well into their usual pre-season training routine with Rangers, who jet off to Portugal for a training camp next month.

But the pair have bolstered that with remarkable ultra-tough sessions with a former military personal trainer, who runs specialist training, with the promise to push the players to new levels.

Former Royal Navy personal trainer, Ross McGaffney, founded Commando X Fit in Hillington, Glasgow and has 'welcomed' King and McPake to his work-outs.

He said: "My background of physical training and fitness is a bit different from normal people. So what I am trying to do with the lads is give them a little bit of adversity in life alongside their training.

"It's not just strength and conditioning, it's also mindset work as well to make sure they are mentally strong as well as physically strong.

"There are young guys out there who are given such a lot at such a young age and are never really told ' that's not good enough.' They have got another ten or 20 per cent in there. They just assume what they are doing is enough.

"Life isn't easy, life is tough and if you can take that on board when you are doing your pre-season work and take that onto the pitch, then it will give you that five or ten per cent more.

"I'm a bit of a sadist. I don't allow them to do the bare minimum to get by.

"I set them a challenge or a work-out within a certain time frame. Now they might canter along and think that it's good enough, but then I'll move up a level and go again

"A lot of it has to do with how we are talking to them and we do explosive work, speed and power, all that kind of stuff.

"I find out who they are then and then try and strip it down further to discover what they can really do."

And McGaffney has been impressed with the work of King and McPake.

He said: "Leon and Josh have been doing amazing. I didn't know the lads.

"Josh for example had a thought process of what he could do and it turned out it was far less than what I thought he could do.

"He said to me that it was the hardest thing he'd ever done after a session and I told him he was being ridiculous because the hardest thing he will ever do will be in a few weeks! This is just the start.

"If he and Leon buy into the process then he will reap the benefits.

Ross is hard core , brilliant guy also

There was a video on Twitter of Leon King doing some of the work - it was functional training, clearly looking to improve his leap height along with other things.

McPake is likely to be moved on, so it's good to see that hasn't led to him losing any motivation.

Hopefully Rangers are keeping an eye on what these young guys are doing, as longevity in football might need different training than that of commando's. Will be good to toughen their mindset but need to be careful to avoid picking up injuries with this max intensity stuff.

McPake looks in great shape looks as if he's bulked up as well with the videos he's had on Instagram from those sessions the article refers too. Hopefully injuries are behind him and he can kick on as he's a talented player.

It's not Commando training.

Now if it was booted runs on road or the endurance course that would be a different matter.

Sounds like plyometric training.

Very popular with track and field athletes, from sprinters up to 1500m runners, as well as high and long jumpers.

Improves your explosive pace and stride length.

It'll be tailored for them as footballers.

I remember it well, from my very young and very brief days as a sprinter...

If only I knew then what I know now, and all that jazz.

This answers my most recent post here.
And blows my thoughts out of the feckin water!
Thanks for that.
“Running up and own the boulevard loyal!

As professional as the trainer is, I just hope he doesn’t burn the lads out!
The lads will be physically fit but that’s not necessarily football fit.

If the guy knows his stuff (and I've no reason to doubt that he doesn't) it'll be pre season preparation work he'll be giving them.

Basically just a base foundation, before the hard endurance work starts wiith Rangers.

The plyometrics work won't be more than a couple of times a week.

Seen McPake put video compilations of his highlights - strengths, skills etc. - on his twitter page the other day. A cynic in me would suggest that he’s advertising himself to potential clubs as he’s for the off. Wouldn’t be surprised to see him go.

Or he's a young lad trying to impress

I liked the look of Josh McPake from the first time I seen him , I’d like to see him given a go.

In 5 years I’d like King , Lowry & 5 or 6 others in our first team .

A bit of extra training can only do them good before they start pre season. I doubt he’ll have them out doing a weighted tab up a heart break hill somewhere.

I wonder if he shouts “grenade” during the pt sessions tho B-)

Changed days, from spending your time in the bookies, or snooker halls, then on to the dancing, to get yir nat king cole.

Fucking despise that pitch. Far too narrow.

Think the RSA use that pitch for some of the younger kids, so perhaps that’s where the lads got the idea.

Nice to see them working hard.

They’ll need to be extremely fit to keep up with the level of fitness we have set over the past season.

It’s the fittest I’ve seen a rangers team.

We just keep going and going

Love to see the lads showing initiative like this, hope it has the desired affect for them

Won't have gone unnoticed by the gaffer too

Rowing for Commando training??

That better be the warm up. 100 push ups before breakfast if you want to be a commando.
