One for you middle aged and older lads but was watching the Ukrainian Super Cup Final last night and I noticed Lucescu is now managing Dynamo Kiev.

Kiev beat Shakhtar Donetsk 3-1, Lucescu was Shakhtar manager from 2004 -2016. When he went to Shakhtar he rebuilt the entire club to the dominant force they are today breaking Dynamo Kiev's dominance. Managed them when the club was forced to relocate from Donetsk.

The title he won with Rapid Bucharest was their first since the late 60s.

He has also had spells as manager with Romania, Turkey, Inter Milan, Besiktas, Pisa & Reggiana.

as players he won 7 Romanian league titles & 1 Romanian Cup as a player

His managerial honours make him one of the most decorated managers of all time:

Corvinul Hunedoara
Dinamo București
Brescia
Rapid București
Galatasaray
Beşiktaş
Shakhtar Donetsk

Zenit
Dynamo Kyiv

Great post mate.

I was actually living in Bucharest when he was managing there in the late 80s. Winning that league was an achievement and a half when you look at that Steaua side at the time - even if it was beginning to break up.

Had the buzz of playing in the national stadium there.

Goes from winning the Turkish league one season with Galatasaray then going to Besiktas the following season and winning it again.

Some man. Memory fails - did he have Hagi at Gala, it was that after him?

That 1980s Romanian football scene was incredible. Bursting with talent and a padded cell full of total lunatics. Ilie Dumitrescu was the crackpot’s crackpot back then. What a footballer though.

It fell away after Ceausescu snuffed it.

For some random reason.

Romania produced some cracking players late 80's through the 90's. Steaua Bucharest winning the European Cup is unthinkable now.

Back at a time when you watched these teams and didn’t really know the players. The ‘86 team that won the European cup didn’t include any of the names that we are familiar with now. That was Pre Hagi, Popescu, Dumitrescu, Petrescu etc..

That side was unbelievably talented. Core of a great Romanian National side that was one of the best in the world.

A fascinating place. Grim at times. Nothing but fun memories though. There was a lot of stuff you couldn't get, shortages, all that jazz. Handily enough, they had great Chinese restaurants, due to some mad exchange between the parties. The country outside Bucharest was beautiful. Many a happy weekend up in Transilvania. Taking a rowboat across Lake Snagov to the monastery Vlad Dracul is reputedly buried in was a sticker. Great country.

Yourself included I presume!

Dynamo Kiev, a fallen giant on the way back under the stewardship of a genius?

Mikhailichenko is the sports director there and stepped in as manager last season. Last few managers have been sacked due to being unable to get into the Champions League.

They have won that last 3 Super Cups and the National Cup last season. Haven't won the league since 2016.

the last 3 seasons they have finished 2nd in the league behind Shakhtar by 2pts, 11pts & 21pts.

Think this move might give them some stability this season, depends how long he stays, he is 75 now.

Romanian rugby died after the revolution too.

I was in Brasov, Iasi and Bucharest 4 years ago, loved it.

he has just delivered them to the next round in Europe as well tonight, absolutely hated by the Kiev fans as well.

Beat Club Brugge 1-0 away from home (2-1agg)

Good side but would take them in the draw, although would want the away leg first. Don’t fancy going to piggery after a trip to Ukraine
