New Leon Balogun interview

Balogun after a bright start was bang average last season, it was utterly correct to move him on, and to a lesser extent Katic.

The issue was the profiling the last manager had with what he looked for in a CB as a replacement on the premise of what Katic was told.

total naivety to the league we play in

Balogun’s card was marked the day he got sent off at Firpark for a ridiculous challenge when the squad was on its knees at the later stages of the euro run.

Letting Balogun go played a significant part in GVB losing his job. We have had bad luck with injuries in some instances such as Goldson but the majority of the other defensive injuries were highly predictable

I don’t think we would have had as significant a collapse if balogun plays at least some of the games instead of King

In hindsight he should have been given another year
No hindsight required.

Leon King should not have been relied on as a first team squad player when two of the centre halves ahead of him are so injury prone. That's not even taking into account the fact that Ben Davies wasn't fully fit when we signed him either!

Definitely an element of bad luck that King played regularly in the Champions League, but we could have reduced that risk significantly, had we extended Balogun's contract for another season.

That's not true but ok.

From the It's All Great, Man Loyal.
Souttar has played as many games at 26 than Balogun has his whole career.
Being fit for 9/21 at QPR is exactly the sort of fitness we need.
A lot of love for Leon which is understandable but there’s also a lot of hindsight specialists who knew we’d end up with our 6th and 7th pick CB pairing for the CL and most of the league so far.

If we're serious about developing our best youth players, we have to accept decisions like letting Balogun leave and King being brought in as his replacement.

I didn't think Balogun was a great defender - I fully accept he was a good signing for us - but we can't keep stockpiling players just in case of numerous injuries and basically making it impossible for our youngsters to get a game.

We're not used to this yet, but this is how we need to progress if we want to genuinely make the most of the better youth prospects.

People have a hard on for sticking the boot into the Souttar when really it was the outlay on a Davies who wasn’t and isn’t fit that has fucked us.
I still think a Katic and Leon pairing would still seen us finish’s the worst side in CL groups.
But again it’s hindsight, Souttar worth a punt but Davies definitely not for me and def not ahead of releasing Leon and Niko

Letting Balogun go at the same time as Katic was utter lunacy, with the injury record of the supposed ’replacement’ evidently not taken into account.

One interesting take from that interview is that it appears Gio and Wilson had a difference of opinion on Balogun's contract, and Gio won. Might go some way to calming the fever on here that Wilson calls all the shots.

Katic also agreed he wasn’t of the standard based on how Gio wanted to play so understood the decision to be moved on
I was saying he was good enough, I'm just saying it was clearly Gio who didn't want him and not down to Wilson

There wouldn’t have been room for Balogun in the European squad.

It’s largely redundant by the fact the manager never wanted Balogun it seems anyway.

Reading some of the comments on FF, I sometimes need to remind myself that it was Balogun we let go in the summer and not Baresi.

Lol!

Was clear to everyone except those who make the decisions that it was a no brainer to offer a deal, everyone knew souttar would be out for periods granted past issues dont indicate the future adding to issues we already had and the lack of numbers at CB
