1875 - Third Lanark RV 0 Rangers 1 (Peter Campbell) - Scottish Cup 2nd Round
Third Lanark were one of the strongest club sides at the time and Rangers' feat in winning 1-0 was considered a prize scalp.Their joy was short-lived however, for after the game Third Lanark protested to the SFA to have the result declared void since Rangers kicked off in both halves.Although Rangers were scarcely to blame for this, the protest was upheld and a replay ordered.
1880 - Nottingham Forest 2 Rangers 1 (McIntyre) - Friendly
1886 - Everton 0 Rangers 1
(Heggie) - English FA Cup 1st Round (6,000)
Rangers had entered the English FA Cup the previous season but had refused to play against Rawtenstall in the first round on the grounds that their opponents had professionals in their line-up.They had been heavily fined by the FA as a result, but their application to take part in 1886/87 had been accepted and they travelled down to Liverpool to take on Everton at Anfield (now,of course, the home of Liverpool).Their preperations could hardly have been worse, for just after midnight on the eve of the game they were turfted out of their hotel after the owner had taken exception to the noise. As far as the game itself is concerned,a Charlie Heggie goal in front of a crowd of 6,000 was enough to win the match for Rangers, but there is still considerable confusion as to the status of the game.According to Everton's history, they scratched from the competition just before they met Rangers,on the grounds they had professional players in the side and the game they played was little more than a friendly. This is also reflected in various reference books which show Rangers being given a walkover, although Rangers prefer to show the game as a cup-tie and they won legitimately 1-0. Either way, they now faced Church in the second round.

With the halfway stage of the European Cup group matches already reached,Rangers were effectively out of the competition.Another home defeat, this time inflicted by Dutch champions Ajax ensured there was little else other than pride to play for in the two remaining games in the section

1982 - we started the season in impressive form, but this result was a hammer blow and followed by a 5-0 defeat by Cologne.

My recollection of the game was that we were excellent and I was sick when McGarvey got the winner. (Incidentally a massive support in the traditional "Rangers End" that day - when it was pay at the gate).

1982. If you want to talk fine margins, at 2 1 up, Prytz hits the underside of the bar from 30 yards.
