Possible boost to Champions League Group Stage entry for 2021/22 Scottish Premiership winners

UEFA still have to confirm it

With Russian teams currently banned it now means that who wins the Premiership now have Group Stage football while 2nd place will start in QR3 instead of QR2 meaning Group Stage would be secured as well - lose in QR3 and drop into the EL Group Stage

Previous it was based on the CL winner having already qualified for CL Group Stage via their own League as Scotland entered at the Play-off round

Story in the Glasgow Times

CELTIC and Rangers could be set to benefit from Russia's Uefa ban with a Champions League spot now almost guaranteed.

The winner of the Scottish Premiership was already in pole position to secure a spot in Europe's elite tournament. But now with the news that Uefa will be banning Russian clubs from participating in their competitions due to the invasion of Ukraine, Scotland looks set to benefit.

With Russia dropping out the coeficiant table, Scotland would jump up a place meaning the Premiership winners would land an automatic group stage spot. It would also mean that the runners up would enter the non-champions path of the Champions League at the third-round qualifying phase.

As a result group stage European football is guarenteed until Christmas via the way of the Champions League, Europa League or Conference League. Scotland will also have a representative in the Europa League in the play-off round stage for the winner of the Scottish Cup, while two other clubs will enter the second and third qualifying stages of the Conference competition.

Russia have been suspended from all UEFA and FIFA competitions, including the World Cup play-offs.

Continental bosses UEFA and global governors FIFA have made the joint decision on a temporary expulsion for Russia from all club and national fixtures.

Both UEFA and FIFA have removed Russia from all fixtures until “football can again be a vector for unity and peace amongst people”.

A joint UEFA and FIFA statement confirmed the move that will further isolate Russia’s sporting situation amid the invasion of Ukraine.

There is still a possibility that the Russian Football Union could appeal this at the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

Good to have the safety net incase things go tits up that we could still do the rebuild with guaranteed Europa League money. Would imagine the difference will be about 15 million but the more rounds we get through this season eats into that.

Reading on here the past few weeks were as well chucking it for a few years if we dont win the league which is absolutely ridiculous.

Totally agree with this. I want the league make no mistake but CL is overplayed.

According to the amended access list it is to rebalance it as Russia had 2 places in the CL
Do you have a link to the excel file that updates who is qualifying for next season at each qualifying stage? Couldn't find it on the bert kassies website.

I don't think the QR3 promotion is true, not sure where the extra place comes from. I thought it went to Austria only.
if they just rebalance it'll be right - as they'd only have 5 teams in QR2 without bumping us up

Alternatively, they could give a 2nd CL spot to Serbia and that'd mean they Austrians bumped forward a round and the rest stays as is

Couldn't find anything myself but I know the link you are talking about

Is the UCL £40 million taxable? If it is won't it be taxed down to 20 mill anyway

Looking at it again for this season

10th place just Champions 2nd QR2

Unless UEFA aren't going promote the 11th place country Champions into the CL Group Stage it means it correct from the OP?

11th place Ukraine

if this is still going on in July and Russia are still banned then I susepct we have a lot more to worry about than champions league places

We need to remember that the scottish press are selective in how much money is available to the Scottish champions for qualifying for the group stages of the Champions League. It’s only £40M if Celtic qualify whereas if we qualify it’s only worth £20M.

It would however make sure that we have 3 teams playing group stage football next season

Which will be entertaining

Some people have chucked it already
