Premier League warns PFA of £762m penalty if season is voided

The thing is the media down South are clamouring for Liverpool to be awarded the title just as their counterparts up here want the bheasts declared champions.
Though Liverpool fans themselves don’t appear to be screaming filth style fashion for it.

The Premier League faces a £762m financial penalty if the season does not resume, players have been told.

Such a penalty would apply if broadcasters demanded refunds on games they could not show, the league said during a conference call on Saturday.

During the call with the Professional Footballers' Association (PFA), the Premier League explained why it wants players to drop wages by 30%.

Clubs and players will now discuss the proposals.

That is because the Premier League is not mandated to make such a decision and it has to be agreed by the players.

As well as the PFA, which is the players' union, representatives from the League Managers' Association - the managers' union - were also involved in Saturday's call, which was concluded in less than an hour.

During the meeting, the league said the season will almost certainly be played behind closed doors if it resumes.

It also warned that, in addition to the penalties payable to broadcasters, hundreds of millions of pounds could be lost in sponsorship and matchday revenue because the season has been suspended.

The Premier League announced on Friday that it would ask players to take a 30% pay cut in order to protect jobs.

There are issues to be sorted out, though, as the PFA and leading agents think wage deferrals rather than cuts are preferable at this stage.

if Sky and BT demanded the money back then surely the EPL would just tell them to do one, slightly more to this than meets the eye

Best thing that can happen to that league is them to be fucked over royally for their cash. Might make them respect it a bit more.

Sky and BT aren't getting the product that they paid for so they've every right to withhold payment or demand the money back. They're not charities.

The EPL excess might just be about to bite them on the arse.

Have any of them not been insured for this? Are they not breaking the law not insuring their product?

Businesses go bust every day. Why should the Premier League think they are a special case for exemption ? If a League can't be completed, then its null and void.

Part of me would love this to happen and another part is concerned that despite their riches it'll be the folk at the bottom wrung of the ladder who ultimately lose out the most.

Is it not time we were told how BT and SKY would react if the season was not played to an end, both have remained very quiet on exactly what action they would take.

Meanwhile in Scotland the Spfl are desperate to call a halt to this season even though the same TV companies will likely want a repayment from Scottish clubs.
Wonder who that would suit?

Less than £40m a team I make it. A drop in the ocean and they should take the hit. The players clearly don't want to play in dangerous conditions and behind closed doors when people are still dieing in hospital so that sky can make some money from adverts. Its repugnant.

Aye exactly. What happens if 2 players break their legs in a tackle? That's an ambulance, a few paramedics, doctors, surgeons, couple of hospital beds etc.

You'd think all of those could be better doing something more important at the moment.

Finishing the season right now is about as important as keeping Sports Direct open.

Many thanks GTB, appreciated.

Burnley chairman has said if they don’t play football by August then they will have no money.

He`s been banging on about the football `eco-system` and how the football world down the ladder in England would be affected.....when the truth is the self serving bastards wouldn`t give a flying %^*& about clubs further down the leagues;or the people employed by them more importantly, if times were normal. Absolute lady's front bottom.

What I mean is they would
Then be free to negotiate a new contract with someone else who would more than likely make up the 700 million shortfall

The EPL bubble is about to burst.

It’s been inflating for years, and many refused to see it for the ridiculous bubble that it was. Who would have thought a global pandemic would have been the pin to prick it.

How can they? It will be in the contract they have with the broadcasters. Money has been paid up front for games that won’t happen the clubs have spent the money. The broadcasters will want the money back as they have lost the revenue stream from subscribers it’s as simple as that. It would end up in court and they would be forced to repay the money or some other arrangement for seasons in the future and reduced broadcast revenue.

So basically they are attempting to scaremonger the players union in to agreeing to play games behind closed doors, ultimately putting the footballers, coaching staff and officials at risk, in order to try complete the season!

Despicable
