Makes sense, I was just thinking how we signed McAuley as a free agent outwith the window.

The way I read it, if U are without a club with no contract u can sign anytime.
Can't expect someone not to play for say 6 months.

This is exactly it. You can sign technically someone on a contract outwith the window, but they can’t be registered to play until the window opens. The only way they can be signed is if they are not registered anywhere when the window closes, like MacAuley was.

It's only if you were without a club in the previous transfer window. If you were registered with a club on the 31st of August then you can't sign for anyone until the 1st January

That doesnt matter as at the end of the previous window the player is still registered at their previous club. Registrations can only be changed in transfer windows.
