RANGERS are reportedly in the hunt for Sydney FC’s Australian U-23 midfielder Brandon O’Neill.

The Ibrox club are believed to have closely monitored the talented playmaker, a key player for the A-League champions.

O’Neill holds an Irish passport and is eligible to play for Republic of Ireland too, although the 23-year-old has represented the Socceroos at youth level.

He’s out of contract in December this year and Rangers are said to be exploring the possibility of making a cut-price move for him in the summer.

O’Neill caught the eye of the Gers scouting staff during the Australian season and the ex-Perth Glory star is rated as one of the best midfielders Down Under.

The set-piece specialist has also been playing for Sydney in the Asian Champions League this season too.

Rangers will have to persuade O’Neill to consider leaving Sydney and he admitted last week that he’s loving his football at the moment.

He said: “It’s great for me here. I love flying into tackles and getting stuck in.

“We are all at a good place right now and everyone at the club is happy.”

Sydney are 11 points clear at the top of the A-League this seaso

It's hard to judge the A-league.

He looks a solid player, very tenacious, not scared of a tackle, but when any A-League team goes into the AFC Champions League, their best players look very average, so hard to say exactly how well he would adapt to the UK. Mat McKay is still doing it regularly over there, so who knows.

On a free this could be a worthwhile, almost risk-free investment....
Dunno if this would be a free mate. Probably have to pay a little to get him in the summer if his contract runs 'til January. Couple of hundred thousand quid no doubt.

These names :D:D:D:D:D

I have a lot of faith in Mark Allen, sounds like the boy might be content where he is though.

So:

Liam Kelly,
Adian Wilson
Declan John
Sean Goss
Greg Docherty
Jamie Murphy

And now Brandon O’Neil.

Are there any players called Seamus or Finton?

saw a bit of the Aussie stuff last week
wee
Matt McKay was frign outstanding

why that move never worked for us I don't know

I’d place the top of the a-league around the standard of lower SPFL premiership.

There isn’t this massive quality drop that some think

Back up deal if we don’t get Goss ? I can’t see past Goss as was probably one of the most underwelmed I’ve been for a signing , and he proves to be total quality .

I'd never heard of Steven Davis before Walter signed him on loan. He did alright...
Yep sometimes we get a wee surprise .
I knew about Davis as a boy I know played in same youth team with him at villla , and I watched youth cup final villa v Everton with a young Rooney making the difference .

The mentally challengeds would go ballistic if we signed this guy "but, but, but there aw bigots an aw rat" :p

We should all know after Goss not to judge and to trust the Markster Allen :D

Agreed. He will get the odd signing wrong, but using this role is the way to go. Thankfully, after initial teething problems, the Board now seem to have realised they have to let him have control over making footballing decisions.

Can we not send copies of scouting DVD's of this guy to Holloway and keep Goss

Looking at various clips of him, he seems to play like a right-footed version of Goss. Obviously impossible to judge the comparative ability levels.

If this link is true, what I would be enthused by is that we're looking at a type of player as such. If Goss can't be kept, it would be excellent to get someone in who can offer what he has in terms of playing style.

Watch quite a bit on Fr/Sat mornings he's ok, but give me Goss anytime.
