Celtic fans have launched a campaign to pay the fine of the supporter who punched the pitch invader during the club’s defeat at home to Paris Saint-Germain.

In the aftermath of Edinson Cavani’s goal to put the French side 3-0 up in the 40th minute, John Hatton entered the Celtic Park pitch and attempted to kick French forward Kylian Mbappe.

The 21-year-old, who admitted to being drunk and forgetting parts of the day, missed the teenage star before being escorted from the field and stadium by stewards when he was punched by an irate Tony Lavelle, one of many Celtic fans unhappy with Hatton.

The 61-year-old’s punch earned him a fine of £400 at Glasgow Sheriff Court.

Hatton, from Belfast, admitted to assaulting Mbappe, earning him a ban from every football ground in Britain.

However, Lavelle, who lives in St Labans Hertfordshire, was treated more leniently with Sheriff Sukhwinder Gill opting against a ban.

She said: “I can understand how you felt – the frustration of yourself and others in the stadium. You are a man of 61 and your last conviction was 42 years ago.

“With something of this nature, I would normally call for reports but I won’t in this occasion. “You have been going to football matches for 48 years with no trouble and you take your nephew to matches. If Celtic Football Club wish to revoke your season ticket, that’s a matter for them – but I would hope they would see sense.”

Celtic fans have set up a Go Fund Me page in a bid to help pay his fine.

Sheriff Suk a yahoo apologist.

The poet who did the punching has previous and his latest act of thuggery is going unpunished entirely with no ban from the judge and the club won't ban him either.

He gets his fine paid for him and that's another one of them walking free.

Rheeks.

What's his previous?

This is an uncivilised course of action. One man is assaulted while being escorted out of the PIggery by Police. But it's ok because it was retribution from one supporter to another. Rule of law is being undermined and it's being presented as a good thing. What's next. No need for Police, stewards or security at the piggery because the beasts will police themselves ...

Says earlier conviction 40 odd year ago in OP.

Doh!! Missed it although 40 years is pushing it a bit. The real issue with what happened is that, while he got convicted & fined the sheriff hopes that he doesnt suffer any more sanctions which, imo, is ridiculous.

Have to agree with this. Looking at it completely dispassionately, the old tim slapped the young tim, doesn't really matter why, old tim did the crime, should pay the fine. Let's not make him a hero

And of course there are some on here who think this is okay, even with what the stupid bitch on the bench said, because this isn't the same scum who tried to destroy us, or call for endless investigations into EBT, or bottle ten year old Rangers fans and get away with it, is it? Gies the fkin boak ffs!

Don't be so utterly ridiculous. I hate Celtic and everything they stand for but I'm able to think rationally at the same time. The guys probably a d*ck but the law's gave his punishment and if his fellow fans want to contribute then that's up to them.

Maybe someone who could explain to me why the judge would think its ok to do that without being banned etc.Does that mean if someone does something to any of your family its ok for you to go out and deal with the matter anyway you see fit without any fear of punishment.

This is a good point to make!

So, the older mentally challenged punched the younger mentally challenged - while he was being restrained by stewards and police ?

Wow, how tough do you need to be to do that, eh ?!

Punching a guy that was being restrained. Deary fcking me. :(

This is the jobless mentally challenged way of making money.

Find a cause that will pull on the heart strings of fellow poets. Crowdfund with sob story. Watch money roll in. Use money to fund poet activities like holidays to Dublin, train & Subway ride from Coatbridge to Ibrox megastore etc.

Whether the green oompaloompa deserved it or not isn't the point, he was assaulted, that's against the law. The mhankies though think they are above the law and a very daft few of them will happily pay up. Would love to know how much they make in total, above the cost of the fine.
