Squad depth

How far we have come since Gerrard came in is shown by the depth we have now. Today we lost a CH before the game, a midfielder, an attacking midfielder, a striker and had a left-back taken off as a precaution. We finished the game with an 11 that would not look out of place as a starting 11 for us most weeks.

On top of that, we have an ex England international striker, a Swiss internationally capped striker, a Croatian capped defender and a Nigerian international midfielder all to come into the squad.

Written down, it is actually pretty hard to understand how we are where we are, given where we were 2 years or so ago.

The first three changes from the starting 11 were Helander, Kamara and a hungry looking Morelos... I can't remember bringing on 3 players of such high quality.

Arfield and Shirley Bassey aren't bad players to bring on either.

As you say, what a change in 2 years.. especially if he keeps Morelos, gets a new midfielder in and Aribo, Barker continue to improve and hopefully Hagi as well.

Kent and Barisic are world class.

It is the best squad in the league.

It'll get a test midweek with all the injuries plus our lack of home grown players for Europa League. Should be fine with some kids for Red Imps but if we don't get some folk fit in a hurry we might be struggling to field a bench in Holland the week after

Slowly built a top squad rather than wholesale changes each transfer window. We're now seeing the positive effect of managerial stability. Hopefully, we'll be reaping the rewards of this approach with trophies come the end of the season.
We’ve had big changes every summer since Gerrard arrived , this summer was our quietest under him and we brought in 5 ( 7 if you include Hagi and Defoe on permanent deals )

previous to that was something like 20 in his first year and 13 odd in his second.

Not a negative btw, it was needed.

No loans this time either. Wouldn't be overly surprised if there is a couple of experienced loans to come in though

Spot on. We are signing a midfielder by all accounts, one was injured today and we still had arfield l. So much better

Thought the same when the first team and the bench was shown before kick off.

We do have a very strong squad now especially given Aribo is still to come back.

We do have the players to take the league this year...and thus far it looks as though we’ve got ot the mentality too.

Early yet but looking promising.
