Kelly has certainly made his fair share of mistakes for Motherwell this season but we're obviously not going to get the perfect keeper as a second or third choice and that's what he'll be.
 
Clearly if Kelly did come back it would be as a backup. Who knows ,We might have two or three of our keepers off this summer depending on how things pan out in the transfer window. we'd have to bring in one on a free or promote from the youth team to make up for that, on top of signing one if butland went. Kelly isn't great but probably the best Scottish keeper we could bring in on a free.

No doubt he was a good player, but made 12 appearances, averaging 59 minutes last season. He also makes £75k a week.
 
With McCrorie going and McLaughlin going, it’s a no brainer.

McLaughlin isn’t home grown as some seem to think.
 
Tav will have a field day with his free kicks in training.

I suggested Kelly months ago in one of the out of contract players threads. Makes perfect sense, as long as he's not first choice.

We have no other option than to obliterate this squad. The ones out of contract - all of them. Davies, Tavernier, Goldson, Lammers, Hagi, Dessers, Matondo, Lawrence, Dowell. If there is an option to move them on, do it.

Cantwell, Butland and Ridvan too as they are sellable assets and in Ridvan's case. A player that has played less than half the games since joining due to injuries. Would rather keep Butland but if it tops up the transfer budget, so be it.

I completely agree - it's got to the stage where, Butland aside, I wouldn't miss any of those listed.

The obvious difficulty will be ensuring that in every case the replacements will be better - Koppen has a heck of a job on his hands.
 
McLaughlin frees up wages and probably get a fee for McCrorie even if it is 500k to 1m. Replace with Kelly for free and probably on less wages than either of them and promote youth for 3rd choice.

Saves wages and gets in a little money.

McCrorie wanted game time last year, he gets by with cup games but even now he isn’t guaranteed them. Time for him to be first choice somewhere.

Kelly will be 2nd choice and not get game time. Easy decision.

Around the time I chucked listening to it altogether.

On the other hand he is country trained, club trained , will be cheap and will be a backup. :D
If Butland is sold there will be another no 1 signed.

We have keepers already employed that couldn’t be any worse than him and would save a wage.

Handling, distribution, dealing with crossed balls, errors and mistakes. His weaknesses right there.

The new analytical and data-driven approach to the transfer window is working well...

It's hard to get a decent back-up in Scotland. Ideally it's a 'keeper coming through the ranks rather than a transfer fee + salary.

Nils Koppen & Anthony Galinski haven't ever heard of a "Liam Kelly". :D

The backup goalkeeper slots are nothing more than homegrown checkboxes in my eyes, not a penny should be spent on them.

What if our first choice keeper gets injured? We are then reliant on Kelly.
 
Kelly has always looked a very competent keeper any time I've seen him play and he would count as homegrown for Europe. Can see no issues with this signing.

Bayern have just had to use their 2nd choice keeper for 10 months. That would kill our season.

We pish ourselves at them having Bain as backup option yet some people seem happy with Kelly who’s worse than Bain.
