PAUL HANLON has claimed referee Bobby Madden ordered Hibs not to contest a drop ball as they chased an equaliser in the closing stages of Sunday’s defeat to Rangers.

The Easter Road outfit were desperate to pressurise makeshift keeper Ross McCrorie in the wake of Allan McGregor’s red card for lashing out at Marc McNulty.

But at an injury-time corner, a Rangers fan launched a second ball into play, resulting in Madden having to stop play and restart with a drop ball at the edge of the box.

Hibs were eager to challenge for possession so close to their hosts’ goal and the potentially vulnerable McCrorie.

But Hanlon said Madden told them they would have to agree to Rangers giving them the ball back, with Connor Goldson subsequently lashing the ball back into the Hibs’ half of the pitch and out for a throw-in.

The defender explained: “At the time, we were desperate to contest the drop ball. It was inside their penalty box and we didn’t want the ball going all the way back to our keeper.

So, we wanted to contest it, but the referee said that if Rangers wanted to give us the ball back we weren’t allowed to contest it.

“I didn’t know that was the rule now, but that seems to be the case.

We were trying to build momentum and keep the pressure on and that kind of put us a bit on the back foot again.”

The defeat — manager Paul Heckingbottom’s first in the league since taking over — ruled Hibs out of the race for third and fourth, and the possibility of European qualification.

Can’t stand the noise about this “incident” - we had cleared the ball from the box when Madden blew the whistle for the second ball. Why the f*** would we face a contested drop ball in the box? That would give free reign for fans to throw something on the pitch at any point and get a contested drop ball...?!

It was an odd moment. Hibs has clearly been told not to contest (which I didn’t think was enforceable) and then we played on it by taking a ridiculous amount of time to clear it with the hibs player 2 yards away.

I think FIFA are banning contested drop balls from next season so they don't need to cry about it for much longer.

...with Connor Goldson subsequently lashing the ball

lashing
/ˈlaʃɪŋ/
noun

  1. 1.
a beating with a stick or whip.
"I threatened to give him a good lashing!"
  2. 2.
a cord used to fasten something securely.
"the lashings used by primitive peoples are more efficient than metal fastenings"
:D:D:D

The other hibs player was moaning about getting booked at the mcgregor incident as he says he didnt put his foot up yet if you watch it back mcgregor goes to kick the ball out and he sticks his leg up

scottish football "expert" talking shite!? Another prime example of how f()cking pish the so called knowledgeable ones are in this utter irrelevant, backwater of a country.

So wait, it’s a rule, and somehow it’s controversial?

Maybe their issue is with the rule itself, or, maybe, just maybe, it’s personal with Rangers?

I’ll let you intelligent non-denominational educated folk make your own mind up :D

It was a controversial incident - they had absolutely no claim on the ball as it was in Rangers possession when the ref blew to stop play - Arfield had won and subsequently controlled the ball with no Hibs player within 5 yards of him.

There was absolutely no reason for it to be a drop ball.

it was very odd - the laws of the game are quite specific though that is changing from next season where the keeper will get the ball in that scenario.

Q3: Why are referees not allowed to ‘manufacture’ a dropped ball?
The wording makes it clear that the referee has no authority to decide who can challenge for a dropped ball and/or where the dropped ball is to be kicked.
If, for ‘fair play’ reasons, the players agree who will kick the ball and where they will kick it, the referee can agree but it must come from the players – it can not be an instruction from the referee as the referee has no authority to do so as a dropped ball is a ‘neutral’ restart which is supposed to be ‘fair’ for both teams.

Changes

Dropped ball
Laws 8 & 9
•If play is stopped inside the penalty area, the ball will be dropped for the goalkeeper
•If play is stopped outside the penalty area, the ball will be dropped for one player of •the team that last touched the ball at the point of the last touch
•In all cases, all the other players (of both teams) must be at least 4m (4.5yds) away
If the ball touches the referee (or another match official) and goes into the goal, team possession changes or a promising attack starts, a dropped ball is awarded
Explanation
•The current dropped ball procedure often leads to a ‘manufactured’ restart which is ‘exploited’ unfairly (e.g. kicking the ball out for a throw-in deep in the opponents’ half) or an aggressive confrontation. Returning the ball to the team that last played it restores what was ‘lost’ when play was stopped, except in the penalty area where it is simpler to return the ball to the goalkeeper. To prevent that team gaining an unfair advantage, all players of both teams, except the player receiving the ball, •must be at least 4m (4.5 yds) away.
It can be very unfair if a team gains an advantage or scores a goal because the ball has hit a match official, especially the referee.

We had also cleared the corner from the penalty box and were likely to have possession when the additional ball entered the field.

If there was ever a team with something to say it’s this mob! Due to their luck against us this season they still think we are on the same level like in the championship! Deluded!

As it was inside the box (I think :D) could goalie not taken part and just picked it up/fell on top of it. The chancer are that if the Hibs player contested it then it would have ended up as a foul on McCrorie.

Who gives a %^*& madden added another extra three minutes of injury time on which shouldn’t have been added on,so it’s swing and roundabouts.

This exemplifies one of the most sinister aspects of refereeing these last few seasons.
Of course referees make mistakes, the best referees in the best leagues in the world make mistakes. in most games the media may comment on it or make a passing remark (unless of course It is Celtic, more specifically Brown, when it is ignored or excused) But on the rare occasion when a mistake favours Rangers, the full machine goes into overdrive. Days and days of character assassination. pages of nonsense spouted, and all aimed at the referee. As time passes. the nonsense gets worse and wrong opinions get accepted as fact (the two penalties against the sheep and Morelos at Ibrox in December are only 2 examples). Yet in England for example, the most horrendous mistakes get a quick mention, then they more on. No-one, least of all referees, like to be slaughtered in the press, and they know that it is only on the rare occasion that Rangers benefit this is going to happen. Even if the referee does nothing wrong, the media make things up. As a result most non-Rangers supporters actually believe we get preferential treatment, and the officials are shit scared to give us anything.
Well done Liewell, that is a very powerful weapon to have in your armoury. We must fight back, even to the extent of breaking contractual obligations. Ban every bastard who unfairly targets Rangers, and take the fight to the highest levels. refuse to co-operate, and if necessary, make the so called reporters and pundits lives hell.

A non contested drop ball as opposed to a catalogue of incidents involving Brown that have just been completely ignored by the Officials and even more so the Compliance officer.Yes we really have got all the big decisions going our way this season.

Can’t wait to win a game of football at some point without it being a national scandal as far as the hacks are concerned.

Might be waiting a while.

When Rangers finish second against the likes of the scum, sheep or spoony the games generally pass without incident.

When Rangers finish first these games are ALWAYS controversial.

Ref was correct , the drop ball was correct and Rangers had cleared the ball. You have to reinvent the rules or twist them out of shape to manufacture a controversy out of that.
Oh it’s in the Sun you say ?

Can’t remember wining a game without any mention of some made up decision that has supposedly benefited us.
Gave up reading that sort of anti Rangers crap a long time ago. .
Anything relevant (or not) I get on here.

I was certain the ball was moving when big Connor lumped it up the park.

Whit did wanker think of that.

I have it on good authority that Madden issued death threats to the HIV players if they contested it. FACT

Forgot about that previous war crime we committed. That’s two in recent weeks! ..... the ball was moving conspiracy, and now this drop-ball disgrace.

This is what happens when you take Morelos out of the mhedia crosshairs. They are so lost they just create controversy anyway.

Hibs would be better looking at themselves.

To come needing a win to keep them in the hunt for European football and create one or possibly two chances, should be far more concerning to them.

GIRFUY Hibs
