Vegas

Thinking of booking Vegas next year with a load of mates. Any tips? Not sure how long to go for etc? How much money i'll spend when there etc.

Been twice, stayed at the MGM both times. Grand Canyon in a helicopter and sailed up the Colorado river, both magic. Plus the gambling n boozing isnae bad :)

If you are going for a week or more make sure to get off the strip for a bit. Supercar experience. Gun Range etc. If its a pissup and roulette, a long weekend should be fine.

We wen't last year for my 30th with 9 of my mates, stayed in New York, New York for 10 nights in September for the Labour Day weekend, pool parties were class, went to see a few shows etc too. Best place in the world. Take plenty £ with you though, so get saving now lol!

Just back at the weekend there and can't believe how expensive Vegas is now, and that's not taking devalued sterling into account.

Get a wrist band for one of the 24 hour buffets. £40-£50 or thereabouts and you get to use a few different hotels as well depending what hotel group you buy from.

If youre gambling, drinks are free, just tip the waitress

The video poker machines on the bars now have a light system which shows the barman if you are entitled to a free drink or not based on your play. I worked out it was cheaper just buying the drinks :D

Going tomorrow with the Mrs for a week. That Vegas thread on the old board was epic, shame I can't access it now.

Hiring a car to do Grand Canyon and Hoover Dam, Cirque du Soleil show (Beatles one), Mob museum, Calvin etc booked. Can't wait

Go for at least 4 nights. If it's your first time you'll probably want to stay on the Strip, the Excalibur is normally reasonably priced. Downtown Vegas/Fremont Street has cheaper hotels and there's plenty to do around there as well but all the famous hotels are on the strip.

For money - are you a gambler? There's always places with promotions or happy hour offers on but drink on the strip can be pretty expensive ($14 dollars for a baileys in the Venetian). Food isn't that bad, had a great meal out of Gordon Ramseys burger place before and it wasn't much more expensive than other places. I'm going next week for 6 nights and taking about £1600, saying that i've already got some stuff booked for when i'm there paid for. For a first time i'd say £2k would be enough

Same here, had that thread saved on my computer and can't see the happy hour offers now!

Seen Calvin in hakkasan last time i was there, outstanding night. Have you pre booked the entry and $100 bar credit? Well worth doing it.

Definitely a week (or more) and no less... I was there in July and stayed in The Luxor, which I thought was excellent. The best location on the strip is right in the middle, plenty of hotels to choose from at varying budgets!

Flamingo
The Linq
Cesars

The big wheel is called The High Roller and definitely recommended at night. You can pay $35 for a free bar whilst you are on, it takes about 30 mins to go all the way round.

I did not know this! Im going there in a month. Cheers for the tip!

Done this, well worth the money.

I've stayed in the Bellagio and Venetian but my mates stayed in the Flamingo and it's a smashing hotel. My dad stayed in the Linq and it's excellent as well, they've pumped a lot of money into that area

We stayed in the Signature at MGM, smashing place and we'll situated. The Grand Canyon is the best trip I have ever been on.

I stayed in the Flamingo, perfect location and it's great value for money. The "Go" rooms are worth the extra cash, plus you get a fridge in the room

Depends how good you are at video poker.

Try the little known Polo Towers its between Paris and the MGM cheaper and very nice right on the strip.
Cost me $40 for 3 drinks at the bar in the casinos best play the tables or the slots and get free drinks ...sit at a slot machine shout the waitress give her a $5 tip and she'll keep coming back.

Aye it's a great hotel, even better you're first off the bus from the airport , Was a wee old woman who worked in the wee shop from Hamilton, wee bridie, lovely wee wummin. we got the bus up to the canyon, never ending journey but worth it, through Boulder City. Had lunch with the Indians that own part of it iirc.

Stayed in the :

Monte Carlo - good "budget" hotel on the strip. Casino excellent as was pool however that's being done up just now

Elara - a Hilton Grand Vacations hotel that used to be part of Planet Hollywood. Entrance in the Miracle Mile shopping mall. A no casino resort but 5mins to Planet Hollywood. All suites in the hotel and we had a spectacular view down to Paris etc on the strip

Vdara - we had a panoramic suite and it was superb on one side but the Cosmopolitan blocked our view down the strip a bit. Suite was unreal though, another non gaming hotel but again short walk into the Aria casino

Some of these may be out of date but may be of use.....

Went a few years back. Stayed at the Mirage. Excellent. Seen cirque du soleil ( Beatles one ), really enjoyed it. Gran canyon by helicopter was something else, well worth the try. Freemont Street was good for the night ( golden nugget etc). Ride at the top of the Stratosphere hotel is fuuckin' mental. Was absolutely buzzing when I came off that. Loads of great places for food, drink and partying. Enjoy.
PS jealous as, can't wait to go back.

Also these were some of my tips to a friend last year........

Water

Water is extortionate in Vegas hotels. If you can be arsed, get a pack from grocery store. They also sell bottles on walkways for $1 during the day….take advantage.

Cool lounges with a fantastic view:

1 Voodoo Lounge at Rio hotel

2 Ghostbar at the Palms

  • Sometime I tend to go to Ghostbar for 8pm opening, have a couple then onto Voodoo.
  • Its approx $20 to get in – also you can get entry passes for free in casino sometimes.

  • Blokes selling nightclub cards on the strip too – so if you see this ask for Ghostbar and Voodoo passes and pay $10 for all cards. They pick them up free I reckon and sell on street.

  • Taxi from strip to Ghostbar – then taxi to Rio – then taxi to strip – far too far to walk about.

3 Mix bar at Delano – (Mandalay Bay) – Had my 40th meal here, really good so if you after a fancy meal then I recommend, or just for a drink.

These lounges will be pricey but worth it for a few. Quite often spend the rest of night at Voodoo as good tunes etc.

Alternative

Gilleys bar at Treasure Island – Great night out and good country tunes at weekends.

Big Elvis at Harrahs Piano bar. (A Must See)

DOWNTOWN

An absolute must do. Real Vegas.

Everything far far cheaper. But id stay on Fremount street as a little bit dodgy outwith (IMO)

Hourly light shows always good. Lots of stuff going on.

SHOWS

Defo recommend Cirque De Soleil

Ive seen Beatles LOVE in Mirage – Absolutely superb

Also seem Mirage in Treasure Island – very good too.

Im going to see KA this time.

Buffet

If you do a buffet – do Caesars Palace buffet – food is top top notch. But go pre 3pm on the lunch service as saves a lot of coin for basically same food. Be about $40 after tax id guess so if its yer main meal of the day its not too pricey looking at it that way. Puts every other buffet in shade – worth doing it just to see how massive the buffets are.

Tipping
  • 15-20% for meals
  • A few dollars each for buffet.
  • Taxi is supposed to be 15% too.
  • 1 or 2 dollars (id say 2) for bloke opening fecking door to let you in taxi
  • 1 or 2 dollars for drink tip WHEN gambling. As the drink is free then id recommend 2 dollars for first couple drinks and then 1 dollar. (Some people don’t even tip which is poor show)
  • If you gamble and staying a while, a 5 dollar tip to start then 1’s or 2’s means you will get served far quicker next times. (toptip)

Other Stuff:

Due to all the tipping going on I always go to the states with a bundle of singles – makes life easier.

Tell the taxi driver it’s your 12th time here when he asks…..that way they will think you know the roads and wont take the piss. (toptip 2)

Vegas Sign This is located about 0.5 miles South of the strip in the middle of the road. It’s a fair walk but worth to get a picture in front of it. (Don’t do it in the middle of the day as far to hot a walk).

Some of these may be out of date but may be of use.....

Depends how good you are at video poker.

Doesn't matter how good you are, you need to spend a certain amount every few mins in order to keep the blue light on (and the minimum balance you need to start with is $20 in Caesars casinos)

It's a lot of layout for a free $7 beer

No, you need to "bet" a certain amount, not spend. If you put in a $20 and lose it in 10 minutes, you get the same drink credit as you do when you put in $20, bet for 10 minutes and still have your $20 after 10 minutes. It's based on play through, not win or loss.

Best place ive ever been! Fremount Street is quality! I stayed at the Vdara, really nice hotel and alot cheaper than others!

Loved Vegas, stayed in the Flamingo which was reasonable- November was a good time as warm during the day but not too cold at night

I have been a few times and stayed in the MGM which was excellent. One point to note, the drinks were free whilst gambling. I am not a huge gambler (or should I say I am not very goods) so bet really low and drank loads!
