'Whataboutery'

The media are again today sneeringly crying 'whataboutery' when the Kris Boyd abuse is brought into the current debate but what is 'whataboutery' if not's just the articulation of a counter view with supporting evidence to balance an argument and establish context.

It's a cornerstone of our Justice system and every day in Criminal Courts opposing evidence is presented in the pursuit of justice and fairness. That's 'whataboutery'.

'Whatabout' the fact that Steven Gerrard this season - and every Rangers manager and countless players in living memory - have been serenaded with 'Orange bastard' without a single word of comment or condemnation from the football authorities, the media or government. 'Whatabout' the hanging effigies?

'Whatabout' we recognise that 'sectarian abuse' is about a whole lot more than calling someone a '19th Century Terrorist bastard'.

(Already posted this in a thread yesterday but I think it's time to put 'whataboutery' to bed before the media and politicians use it solely to limit the debate to Rangers fans.)

Correct, it's the SMSM's go to response when you point out their painfully obvious double standards, hypocrisy and agenda. It means "yes, you are right, we are hypocrites with appalling double standards who lack integrity, but we love bashing Rangers so we dont care and nothing is going to change."

It was a great word to describe the hypocrisy in Scottish football when it was first used (regularly on H&H I believe)

Now, it's thrown about by anyone wanting to deflect from any issue aimed at them in a quite ironic case of whataboutery!

The filth have infiltrated the Media and politics, we can clearly see the agenda and narrative spinning. Selective reporting and highlighting from MP's they hate us, and until we hate them as much as they hate us we will be forever scrambling our way to defeat lies and for the truths to go unheard. Our enemies are many, but like dominos they fall.. I am not calling for anything illegal, just the same passion the late Sandy Jardine showed, not to wait for the Club to do something, but to actively protest for change and to publicly display the hate towards our Club and Fans from the individuals in the media, in politics and in the SFA and SPFL.

I've seen it 1000 times over the last year and I still don't know what it fuckin' means. Can someone help me out.

I don’t like them using whataboutery to close down debate but just as bad is our fans using their actions to justify their own.

@TEnglishSport This is really poor from Steven Gerrard. A fellow manager has been subjected to sectarian abuse. He should leave the whataboutery to others

Reply to @TEnglishSport You, and the whole of the Scottish media, ignored the sectarian chanting aimed at Gerrard in the first Derby game at Parkhead. %^*& off with your whataboutery

The whataboutery response is simply a shameful and deliberate avoidance of the subject matter in an attempt to stifle discussion. It is used in a deceitful way to prop up a one sided argument by one who knows full well what he is doing.Ain't that right Tom(we know you are never off this site)

Its impossible to have an adult conversation with any moron that uses such a phrase.

Every club in Scotland has problems with discriminatory behaviour. If you try and say that "whataboutery" is thrown right back at you.

Who cares what others think.

It’s just another tool to try and control the narrative.

We should no longer be willing to play by the rules of the past.

If the media are not demonstrating balance - and this latest sectarian chants thing is a classic case in point - then we call them out and f**k what anyone thinks about that.

It's just a cheap way of trying to close down a counterargument,a word often favoured by hacks such as Waddell among others.

Challenge these bigots at every opportunity on any social media platform they choose to spout their bile. Do it without mentioning previous cases just advise them that if they don't condemn all forms of sectarianism and bigotry they're part of the problem.

Fuds like English, Spiers et al need bringing to task, ignoring the fannies isn't helping!

Given that Gerrard got it a lot worse at the Chamber of Secrets ? He’s just being a fanny.

It's a stupid and empty retort.

Unsurprising it is often used by the mentally challenged toadies in the media and beyond .

It is ,in fact ,a nothing point made by empty vessels.

That said , it also has sinister connotations attached.

It serves as a propaganda tool in order to demote the rights of one section of society .

That's the real game in play here.

Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience. – Mark Twain

Everyone can point the finger at us but they dont want to know when we put solid evidence on the table.
A bit like when they hounded us n tried kill us off for using at the time a legal loop hole, but now they’re going through the courts for something that is beyond excusable, disgusting, vile way way way worse than ebts not even comparable but when we say anything it’s (point scoring).
They just want their voice and opinion heard and that’s it and if it’s not going there way let’s roll out the victim card!
That community of society is a disease very very dangerous bunch of excusers.

A word used by a person unable to defend his untenable position in an argument/debate.

Yup - with intention of narrowing the context of the debate to avoid having to consider argument that might weaken your own. Scarcely a sophisticated tactic, but perfect for the agenda-driven.

That is the only pertinent connotation this word has to the entire debate.
It is used as a tool to shut down and limit the debate in order to narrow it down to the real reason that the debate ever surfaces.
The debate isn't about social justice or making Scotland a nicer place to live, it is merely a device for attacking Rangers and the Protestant community.

That is why limited liability would be a dangerous road to go down.
Much like the current situation with the Compliance Officer, suddenly the balance of sporting fairness can be taken away from the field of play and influence brought to bear that changes the contest in a manner that corrupts the outcome.

Scotland is no longer a society where there can be much trust in those who carry influence behind closed doors.

Whataboutery could be seen as a way of improving consistency of decision making by considering similar incidents in the past.
Nothing wrong with “whataboutery”
As the OP mentions, the legal system offers plenty of examples where “whataboutery” is the basis of a law.
The “self defence” alibi for example.
The US constitution with its many amendments as well.

Not suggesting arguing with them, just let them know you know what they are.......at every opportunity!

I agree with what you are saying and it wasn't a dig mate, but Spiers and English court a reaction then in Haggerty style play the victim at the first opportunity, after dragging people into an argument with their one sided comments and agenda.

Its all selective and opportunistic messages they put out there to get a reaction from us.

Someone tried the Whataboutery angle on my twitter, i called them point scoring, they didn't like it.
