Boro fan arrested for leaving 11yo son in hotel to go drinking after fa cup win

Is it any worse than kids being left with a coke and a packet of crisps outside on the street as dad was in the pub.this was in the 70’s when their could be running battles.

Not dad of the year behaviour, would love to know if it was a disgruntled Mrs, mate, hotel staff(Man U fan) or the kid who reported him,

Just had a flashback to sitting outside the dalriada, is the post with all the mileages to cities around the world still there?
On the Edinburgh road side it was

I once worked with a woman whos husband, a carpenter, was an uber fanatical Sunderland fan...She said the last straw was when he cancelled a dinner she had arranged because of a big job he was involved in...Later that evening she happened to be watching MOTD showing Sunderland highlights and noticed a familiar face jumping around after they scored.

They divorced, she ended up marrying a doctor and is very happy, Sunderland still languish in Division One. B-D
I stayed off school once forging my mums handwriting to say i was ill and would not be at school, went to Stranraer to watch Rangers in a midweek daytime cup tie (no floodlights?), our deputy head was the linesman and spotted me and my pals standing front row at the corner flag, we got called into his office but i think he admired our ingenuity and no punishment was dealt out.

Selfish - leaving your kid in a massive city in a hotel room so you can drink. I would suggest the guy has alcohol issues if that’s the way he behaves.
Possibly, although he could have bought a carry out and drank in the hotel room for a whole load cheaper if alcohol was his no.1 motivation.

I was travelling to Ibrox with my mates from EK by that age.

What a lot of bollocks
I was brought up in Eat Kilbride and wasn't allowed to travel to Ibrox on my own (train + subway) until I was 13. I was allowed at age 10 to get the bus to Hamilton and watch Hamilton Accies regularly. Paul Hegarty played up front before getting a move to Dundee Utd where Jim McLean worked his magic and turned him into an excellent centre back.
Changed days indeed. I never at any time considered my parents were guilty of child neglect. Quite the opposite, I thought they were far too strict. :)

Left him in a hotel fvcking posh cvnt. my old man left me outside the pub with a can of juice and a packet of crisp.while he was in the pub with his mates before we went to Ibrox.when I was growing up. :D
Different times though etc, paedophiles only became a thing in the last 20 years ago according to some in here.

Reminds me of the Jay story from inbetweeners when a guy was tied up to a lamppost and bummed by 20 guys. As if the first 20 guys who walked past were opportunistic gay rapists.

The boy has been left in a hotel room, selfishly yes, but chances are him and his arse would have survived unharmed.

There will be several layers under this story as alluded to above.

Apparently that's not the case, its just you hear about it more these days
I played out from a young age, back home when the street lights go on etc, honestly at no point did I worry as a kid about peodos, serial killers, shooters etc that you get nowadays. It’s much more prevalent now

As was I however there weren’t the same amount of sickos and peodophiles etc lurking around as there are these days. I wouldn’t let my kids do it now until they are at least 15. Different times.
I see your point but I'd say there were just as many sickos and paedos around at the time, we just didn't have as much blanket coverage in the media.

Most of it was hushed up or ignored as we've seen at C*ltic, Catholic Church, BBC etc.

My regular routine before games was standing outside various pubs with a can of coke and a packet of crisps while my dad was in the pub. That was back in the 80s though. You just can't do it these days.

Hotel ffs? I'd have loved that at 11.
All kidding aside I don’t necessarily think it’s a good assumption to make that an 11 year old is safer in a hotel room on his own than out playing in a field somewhere. The list of things that could go wrong is endless in a hotel room- fall from a window, Burns from a boiling kettle, drown in a bath, Burns from a trouser press or iron, electrocution from playing with sockets, alcohol poisoning from a mini bar, access to porn on the hotel tv, I could go on. Kids mature at different ages of course but to go out on the lash and leave your kid in like that to me doesn’t sit right.

At least he left him in a hotel, rather than sitting on a low dyke outside a pub with a crisp drink and a bag of coke:))

Would have gotten away with it in days gone by but not now. Think at 11 it's a bit severe arresting the bloke mind you.

my dad and uncle once left my cousin in a pub in the early 80's. Dad said they were going into another pub when the realised my cousin wasnt there, go back to the pub and he's sitting there eating crips/drinking coke :)

Mate he is 11 not 5. What 11 year old is going to drown in a bath?
Hotel windows you can’t open wide enough to fall out.
You trying getting a 11 year old to iron his clothes :D
Porn and alcohol yeah maybe but he probably has access to that anyway.

All seems a bit blowing out of proportion the press won’t be telling the full story either. Maybe the 11 year old was fine with it and the hotel grassed the da up?

I remember the days standing outside the pub waiting. Changed days indeed. Everyone being terrorised because politicians have spent generations refusing to act. Lock them up and throw away the key. I won't mention my dad's view on why politicians do this.

He’s 11 FFS I was getting a bus home and letting myself in the house a couple of hours before my parents got home from work by that age.
I know mate. Quite agree. I was sweeping out chimneys of big houses at the same age.

That was in response to the poster who said you are far safer in a hotel room than out playing I was highlighting why it’s not necessarily the case

Exactly.

The boys months away from highschool.

Wains are too mollycuddled these days.

How did they know a child was “sleeping alone” in a hotel room. Was some pervert in snooping about when they shouldn’t have been?

When I was 12 I was allowed to travel myself from The States back to Glasgow to visit my grandad for Christmas.

Don’t think kids are street smart these days though. My nephew is 12 just now and he’s not even allowed to go into the town himself yet. Wouldn’t want him to either. Too many weirdos about.

Fall out the window?:))

Im 38 but when i was 11 being left at home was common while the maw went shopping.

At least he never left him ootside the pub for hours while occasionally popping out with a can a coke and a mars bar.

Those were the days.
Myself and my brother sat outside pubs across Scotland with a can of coke and bag of crisps waiting for my dad and uncle. We weren’t the only ones seemed to be the norm back then.

That’s why they need therapy if somebody calls them a name at school these days.

Soft as shite:))

I was reading up on the legalities of this a while back, and it's basically at your discretion when you think your child is safe, and is old enough.

It's at your discretion but within reason. I came away thinking the law seems to say under tens is too far, but that's was basically a guess because there no minimum age in the law, it's vaigue.

Personally I think it depends on the length of time , and the specific 11 year old in this situation. Some 11 year olds are very competent, have a phone, can use it, would have their bearings in the hotel, be comfortable with the door key.

I would leave my eleven year old in a hotel room of they were comfortable, but only for an hour or two at the most, but not a night out for hours and hours. Plus even when you get back the kid might not be properly cared for if you are pissed.

I bet his mates called it in.

That was my take on the law.

Children can be left but if anything happens to them that is where the law steps in.

Obviously no saw Home alone 2 or all sorts of mayhem could've ensued, updated massively though to Xbox points and Cali weed for the expenses.

At 11 the boy should be able to look after himself but that’s not really the point. I have kids a similar age and there is no way it would even enter my head to leave my kids in a hotel room so I could go out into town. He shouldn’t have taken his kids to the game if he wanted a night on the lash

Probably the tip of the iceberg, like to hear the background to it all - Parents could be separated etc...

Never understood people like this, and I know a few.

How poor must your relationship with your partner be when you have this hobby or interest you are fanatical about but they aren't able to accommodate that? Imagine it's so bad that you have to lie to them just to go and watch a football game.

My wife isn't that bothered about football but she at least knows when upcoming matches are being played and we tend to schedule around that.

Can't imagine how bad things would have to be before I'm pretending I have to work just so I can go to the match.

Lots comparing it to being home alone. Entirely different in my opinion. He’s left him in a building surrounded by strangers.

The world is rife with paedos and the kids 11!

I can see both sides of the argument but wouldn't even think doing the same to my son.

Surely, part of taking him to the games is enjoying the victories with him. The hotel would have had a bar.

I'm honestly trying to figure out what the big deal is.
If the police are saying that they were called in the early hours of the morning then possible that the kid has freaked out or had a bit of a meltdown which has caused a scene which has led to the police being called.

11 years old should be old enough to be left at home or in a hotel room while your parents go out for a while. Maybe 2 or 3 days would be pushing it but just 1 night? Seems like it should be fine.

I wonder what the cut-off point would be for when you wouldnt be arrested for leaving your kid alone in a hotel room. 12, 13? Surely not 16 or 18?
