Police Scotland has defended its handling of the Old Firm match at Celtic Park after missiles were thrown between fans at the end of the game.

Rangers said its supporters had been left "unprotected" and that elderly and disabled fans had been injured by bottles and other missiles.

Celtic said its supporters and stewards were also hit by debris, including seats ripped from the stands.

Police Scotland said its plans had been "proportionate".

A total of eight people were arrested for various offences including disorder, pyrotechnics and religiously aggravated offences.

Ch Supt Stevie Dolan said: "We are aware of missiles being thrown between groups of supporters within the stadium, one of which struck a police officer who thankfully was not seriously injured.

"Any reports we receive from members of the public relating to match-related incidents will be investigated.

"Further inquiries into disorder on Fielden Street before the match are being carried and we will continue to work in partnership with football clubs to ensure that such events take place safely."

In a statement after the match, which ended in a 1-1 draw, Rangers said it was "disappointed" with the police response.

"Our support was left unprotected as they were attacked by bottles and other missiles," it said.

"Reports so far include injuries to elderly and disabled supporters. Furthermore, we are collating evidence of possible hate crimes which will be reported to Police Scotland as a matter of urgency.

"We intend to raise our concerns with Police Scotland and Celtic during the debrief."

Celtic said it was still "working through the recent events at Ibrox".

During a match last month, a Celtic physiotherapist was hit on the head by a glass bottle and glass had to be removed from the Celtic penalty area.

"It is extremely regrettable that again our supporters have been targeted with missiles, including bottles and seating, ripped from our seating deck, resulting in injury to fans and stewards," said Celtic.

"We will be liaising with all relevant parties in order that a wide range of issues are fully addressed in the appropriate manner."

Good to see them going the whatabouttery route:

"We are aware of missiles being thrown between groups of supporters within the stadium, one of which struck a police officer who thankfully was not seriously injured"

Why don't we just pull this card every time we're accused of something instead of admitting to the accusations. Seems everyone else is afforded that luxury.

At what other time were Celtic supporters attacked with missiles?

Away fans at these games are normally kept back and the home fans cleared from the stadium to prevent any possible trouble. This didn't happen yesterday. Only Police Scotland could explain why, but they won't.

But it's our own fault and 50% of the blame lies with Rangers fans just standing about waiting to be let out of the stadium.

Thankfully they are not a private organisation that can exist without accountability, sadly I think that’s where our entire Country is of a 3rd world standard. There is zero accountability from those at the top, from the SNP administration, down through the Lord Advocate, Prosecutors Fiscal, Courts, Judges, Police, Detectives, Sargeants, MSPs of ALL parties, local councils of ALL parties, repulsive and divisive schooling, repulsive and divisive churches

All of the above would be going berserk this morning, even Sturgeon, if Rangers fans were allowed to stay in Ibrox after the game and pelt Celtc fans in the corner with bottles.

They can’t stop bottles being thrown to be honest.

There seems to be a real regression of the way people behave in general in recent years.
I’m sure England have already said they are looking into a report about football fan behaviour regressing post Covid Lockdowns. Big boy world, where they try to make society better and at least scratch below the surface of why there is a problem.

Up here? Nothing to see here guv, it’s your fault it’s not my fault

The police could have been much more focused on moving them out of the stadium at the end.
If they had done then things would have been better. It started with them throwing glass half bottles. We had nowhere to go,there was a group of our disabled fans stuck at the front, totally unprotected.I saw one seat being thrown from our side (not seats as stated here).
They were chucking eggs too,so pre-planned.
The policing was poor and the stewards are pointless.

All that's going to happen now is more searches at the turnstiles. As ever the majority will suffer due to the actions of the scummy minority

Let's have a wander down memory lane. To 2nd May 1999.

We won the league at their dump.

Our players celebrated on the field - as you do.

Then were pelted with missiles while going back down the tunnel.

The time spent on the pitch back then should have allowed the police to clear the stadium of the Celtic fans....but, no! They were too feart.

They should have made the home fans to leave pronto to avoid what happened. You don't have to be a genius to work that out.

Saying that can the police inside the stadium be confident of their colleagues outside maintaining order among their support as they leave the stadium and make their way out into Glasgow? That's why they half asked staggered it imo. And once again that's on that stinking mob of reptiles not us.

To fair I wouldn’t fancy his job trying to police the dregs of society. At the end of the day it’s the people who can’t behave that is the main problem
People see gun toting militia types storming the US capitol and think that that type of behaviour is acceptable. Throwing missiles is just part and parcel of mob rule.

It’ll regress to 80’s style policing before long. Either that, or away fans will be banned from certain grounds. Running the gauntlet with glass bottles might seem edgy and have an adrenaline inducing buzz when you are youngish, but in reality who in their right mind could be bothered with that shite when you reach a certain stage in life?

I know I can’t anymore.

Police Squad strike again eh ,if it's not Rangers pubs being attacked (in recent times Dalmarnock and Oswald's) without an Officer in sight then it's filming Rangers fans at games while neglecting opposition fans.

I think there is a massive issue with policing in this country. Their go to is to let everything go at the time but to then spend the next few weeks chapping on people’s doors after reviewing footage
There's no doubt about policing being an issue, but surely you see someone doing something, like say lobbing glass bottles into fans with the potential for serious injury, you arrest that person and deal with it, not let it go and hope to catch them later.

Too honest for our own good.

If they start ushering the filth intent on goading the away support out of the stadium there’s no one there to throw bottles.

Instead they stood back and watched as more and more of the scum b*stards made their way to the section next to us. That’s the issue here and where Police Scotland are absolutely culpable.

I have heard from people at the game that Rangers fans were searched at 3 points on the way into the ground. We don’t need to wonder how many times the home support were searched and therefore from where it is most likely the glass bottles may have originated…
