Celtic face threat of multimillion pound compensation claim(The Times)

It must be horrible for the victims and their families for the SFA report delay. It will have to be published soon though, and when we get to see the original, and find out what was changed, when, and by who, it will surely strengthen calls for a full independent inquiry... and ultimately a lot of individuals looking at jail time.

It's pretty obvious that the original SFA attempt to mark their/Celtic's own homework would have been along the lines of CSA being a national, multi-club issue with the main focus being on never letting it happen again.

I can confidently guess the following won't have been in the original SFA report.

- The large majority of abusers and convicted abusers worked at one club
- That club knowingly re-employed known offenders
- That club has conducted several internal reviews, including one allegedly ongoing, which didn't find any offenders... Which allowed the paedophiles they employed to continue offending
- In at least one of these alleged investigations not one single victim was contacted.
- Large volumes of child pornography were found on the clubs premises
- The club attempted to claim that the youth team was a separate entity, despite a massive amount of evidence to the contrary
- The club paid their youth team money to change their name
- The club continued to pay large sums of money to a jailed and convicted paedophile ex-employee.
- An ex-director of the club, whilst recovering from an injury which doesn't medically exist, was quoted as saying the police told him not to change his story re. child sex abuse
- A large list of names of sex offenders employed by the club was passed to the police
- The club organised cross-border games with clubs which it has transpired also employed now-convicted abusers.
- Similar games were organised with religious sports clubs ran by sex offenders
- Several high-profile paedophiles, including showbiz personalities and religious figures, were connected with the club.
- Children were taken abroad by paedophiles to play in fictional games and tournaments
- More than one boys club was set up by convicted paedophiles, including one refered to in court as one of Scotland's worst ever offenders
- The club recently fought against a child sex abuse victim in court, and lost
- The club is facing imminent legal action from a large number of other victims.
- The club claimed to family members of a now-deceased victim that they had no record of him ever having played for the boys club. Apparently the club has access to records of the boys club which they claim was a separate entity.
- The club has for some reason not called for a public investigation so they could quash the scurilous rumours that they set-up, funded, operated, facitated, covered up, then covered up the cover-ups of at least more than one large paedophile ring.

There will be nothing in the report saying the club should be shut down. There will be no calls for a further investigation into how it went on for over 5 decades and to this day. There will be no calls for an investigation into the actions of the police, media, courts, politicians, former club employees, current club employees and anyone else who allowed the abuse to continue. Abuse which absolutely everyone knew was going on.

The day for an actual investigation is getting close.

All of the above proves the need for a full independent inquiry headed by Westminster into not only Celtic, but every authority that has failed the survivors throughout the decades and the subsequent coverups.

Tremendous summing up, Kbhblue. We know that, among others, journalists keep their eye on this thread. If only one of them had the balls to copy and paste the bullets you have inserted and try and get answers in an open letter to the perpetrator and in their own publication.

It’s not just Celtic mate that needs investigated it’s the whole way we as a country protect our children, from Cubs groups to church groups to football groups they all need looked at,

Where Celtic have more questions than most to answer many others have to be looked at

It is disturbing when laid out like that. The apathy is unbelievable.

An excellent post.

I played for Eastercraigs between 1974-1976 and played against celtic boys club at Barrowfield three or four times.
As a fourteen year old it was quite an intimidating place to go for the first time.
Walking into the dressing rooms from the car park at the celtic social club the home dressing room had their celtic tops on the pegs together with shorts which had numbers on them , just like the senior team.
The grass pitches were immaculate with corner flags , brilliant white nets and the ref and linesmen were all fully kitted out.
Our home pitch , a red ash one at a school on Cumbernauld Road , Dennistoun barely had lines and never even had nets.

Come kick off the pitch was surrounded with their supporters and if I recall correctly many of them filtered out from the adjacent celtic social club .
Our manager John Murray told us that just like the senior team they would come out the traps early and try and kill us off so just weather the storm for the first 15 minutes and then play our own game.

Murdo McLeod played for the Eastercraigs team a couple of years above me.
To allow himself to be wheeled out to spout the separate entity nonsense as he did a year or so ago is truly sickening and unforgiveable.
I played for Eastercraigs probably a wee bit earlier ( when Ally Dawson played for them) and what you describe is exactly what I remember too.

I played against them there and as 2Bornot2B states, it was a very intimidating place for a young kid as adults that had come from the social club would line the touchline and verbally taunt you pretty much all game from the sidelines. I played on the wing and remember deliberately drifting infield to get away from the touchline and the bile that came from there. Shocking when I think back, that, any young teenager should have to deal with that.

Same side with Gordon Boyd, tucker and big shay ?, how I rememher it as well , the financial backing Celtic boys club got was off the scale compared the rest of their opposition, separate entity? don't think so.

The protections in place NOW for children in Scotland is first class. Strict safeguarding procedures are now in place for all sorts of organisations that work with children and young adults.
The problem is that no such safeguards were in place years ago and such organisations attracted pedophiles and creeps, non more so than Beast FC.

It’s an everyday learning situation as beasts try every scam to get their fix, it is a whole lot better as you say but complacency leads to bad practices.

Just a thought...
Is it possible that someone like Clive Sheldon Q.C. could help the Spotlight Team/Adrian Goldberg??

The names are fading from memory a wee bit now but our midfield 3 was Gordon Boyd, myself and Frank ( can’t remember his second name) . Happy days, at least for us. Ally Dawson was centre half.I remember playing CBC at Barrowfield - as someone said the cash thrown at it with strips and tracksuits was very professional and miles ahead of anything we had- it was virtually full of Celtic s-forms. In fact my secondary school team mate had signed for Celtic and I remember playing against him at Barrowfield. I hope to God he didn’t experience the horror others did.

Knowing now what was unfolding at that club makes your skin crawl, listening to Gordon Woods experiences is truly shocking, the fact it had been going on since the sixties absolutely abhorrent. The magnitude of abuse carried out at Celtic should never have been allowed to manifest for so long. The selective memory of those associated with that club is disgraceful. If only they called the police at the outset.

Agree Remo-town with what you have posted, the mind set politically in Scotland has changed. Typical Labour voters like you say have switched to the SNP and in the once strong Unionist areas of the west of Scotland, where a change could've been made, there is simply not enough votes to make that change.

There is a lot of truth in what BN94 has stated in previous posts regarding the SNP and the Catholic vote, from a west of Scotland perspective anyway and why it’s important to them in that area. For the SNP though, to so blatantly and disgracefully distance themselves from what has happened at Celtic Football Club for that vote is totally and utterly inexcusable and for that fact alone, I find it difficult to understand why any right minded thinking person, especially being of a Rangers persuasion would give them their vote.

We also have the question regarding the Union of Great Britain and the Protestant vote in Scotland, but that's for another thread.

For the time being though the SNP stance regarding the systematic Child Sexual Abuse that went on at Celtic Football Club has to be questioned, the victims deserve nothing less.

And as I’ve said on previous occasions, the SNP are letting the people they are in power represent down so dramatically with their reluctance not to take a more prominent stance in relation to the vile abuse committed at Celtic Football Club.

why do think our justice minister was appointed and remains in position , it's not rocket science and bazarly enough the ones that vote for them are not scientists

It must be horrible for the victims and their families for the SFA report delay. It will have to be published soon though, and when we get to see the original, and find out what was changed, when, and by who, it will surely strengthen calls for a full independent inquiry... and ultimately a lot of individuals looking at jail time.

There will be no calls for an investigation into the actions of the police, media, courts, politicians, former club employees, current club employees and anyone else who allowed the abuse to continue.

Think piggy was only there for a year then left.
Given the nick of nonceco during his time there I'd imagine he is privy to a secret or six

A wee question in relation to the Lawrence Haggart tragedy. His murderer, Brian Beattie, was he on the payroll at Parkhead? If so what was his role? Also, could he be one of the list of 14 names that was handed to police by Gerry McSherry back in the 90s?

No, Beattie was a horrific beast who admitted to a number of abhorrent crimes but always denied (to this day) any involvement in Haggart's case. He is not known to have any specific football or Celtic connection. Seems to me he was an easy scapegoat. The Haggart case needs looked at again, very closely.

Found this on Celtic Wiki http://www.thecelticwiki.com/page/John+McGinn

Now has it been added by someone from our side or is the scandal at last dawning on them?

Post-Note:
Sadly, his judgement (alongside that of Kevin Kelly & other old Board members from the 1980s) was further tainted years later when revelations were revealed that he had entered business relations with Jim Torbett who later was found guilty of child abuse against young boys in the Celtic Boys Club. This does not mean that he was aware in whole or in part of any of the wrong doings. Jim Torbett had once been released from Celtic Boys Club but later returned a number of years later.

The question is what did he know or not on the events surrounding Jim Torbett? Was he able to help those affected, or did the poor management at Celtic provide the environment to allow Jim Torbett to proceed with his actions? One statement in court (by Hugh Birtt) claimed that he had tried to inform board member Kevin Kelly (and other board members) of concerns over Jim Torbett and that Kevin Kelly will have (allegedly) known about the concerns on Jim Torbett. Kevin Kelly and Jack McGinn strongly denied being aware of allegations concerning Torbett when he returned to the Boys Club, and told the BBC that he was not aware of any previous allegations against Torbett until his court case in the 1990s.

In fairness, Jim Torbett and his ilk have a knack to pull the wool over the eyes of everyone and that is what happened at Celtic, as the victims were too young to come forward (it takes a lot of bravery & understanding) and it was a different time. These cases have occurred across a number of football clubs in the UK (including Hibs & Rangers).

It may not be fair to taint Kevin Kelly and Jack McGinn with what occurred, but on top of all the mishandling whilst at Celtic, this in addition to all else sadly doesn't help their case. Both Jack McGinn and Kevin Kelly are good decent men from all the reports we have on them from people, and from the information we have to date, we do not believe either would have been party to anything that occurred but answers must be given where possible for the benefit of the victims and their families.

Absolute Bollocks they all Knew.
The most intriguing thing is contracts?

Was there a contract between CFC and TTC for TTC to supply Torbetts cheap tatty trophies?

I do know CFC cut ties with TTC in 2001( which means CFC were shamefully still doing business with this convicted sex offender throughout his first sentence)

Aye excuses! But what I found strange was their acknowledgement of the scandal. The first time to my knowledge. Perhaps it is individuals getting their excuses in place . Perhaps the hands don't want to go down with the sinking ship

What was strange to me is that they have a Celtic Wiki and include many references to a so-called separate entity in it.
