Match Thread Tranmere Rovers v Rangers, Rangers TV, ko 12 noon

Simpson has the tools to be a CH but clearly needs a full season or two of first team football because the lack of football he's played at the age of 24 is staggering.
I’d honestly be looking at punting Edmundson and loaning both katic and Simpson . And then bring 1 in

We controlled the game for pretty much 85 minutes. Worked the ball into nice areas but our crosses were all to Tranmere players and our shots we’re either straight at the goalie, blasted over the bar or embarrassingly wide.

They scored a nice goal, but we failed to clear our lines twice.

I agree, it really is a poor result. But the poorest thing was just how hopeless we were when we had the ball in or around their box.

It’s almost like players weren’t even bothered about trying to pick out a Rangers player - instead just lashing it aimlessly across the box.

Still plenty of time to improve in pre season though.
Thank h-s, gives me a bit more of a prospective regarding our performance.

The nice goal you said they scored well Gerrard said it was embarrassing from us

In these games it’s all about attitude.

Look how hungry Kelly is to play and prove himself.

Some older and more experienced players should take note.

Defoe looked up for it in the first half - just didn't make the most of his chances. The youngest and oldest players in the squad showing desire. A few of the fringe players should be following their example.

Yip, as I mentioned, I appreciate the trouble and expense taken to be there but when is the time to speak up about some of the content of their loud, vocal support?
For me, now HAS to be the time.

We've had nobody at matches for an entire season. A season where the team delivered the title.

So the lads take the field for the first time in front of our fans since winning the league and what do they get?

"F*ck Bobby Sands, he's deid."
"No pope of Rome."

That's inside the first 10 minutes of the match.

No panty wetting here. “No where near good enough for a Rangers standard…”

Gerrard honest as ever.
Spot on

Total and utter red neck and embarrassing from the fans.

Either turn up to support and promote Rangers, or go somewhere else to hate celtic.

Got the kick off time for this wrapped round my arse, glad I did going by what the Gaffer has had to say.

No damage done, but maybe a wee reminder to some that they need to up the ante.

you do know they probably wont be here next year, same as last season

well, you do know that, but your moaning anyway, right?

Not moaning in the slightest mate just an observation from the game of football I watched.
You do know it's a football forum right? Where people give their views on football, in this case Rangers.

Just got back in from the match the main thing is minutes in the legs.

One thing I will mention is Jones attitude is honking don’t know if anyone else at the match noticed his shite attitude to young Mayo and constant little tantrums.

Bad egg would be happy if we got rid of him now another I would like to get rid of is Edmunson was a huge fan when he came in but that ship has now sailed.

Kelly again played really well will get better as the seasons go on can’t wait to have the likes of Jack Kamara Barisic back as we are missing a lot of quality.

Just got back in, was expecting to hear of a comfortable win and the team line up would've suggested such, but no.

Getting beat 1-0 by EFL League Two, come on, regardless of it only being a friendly, that a ridiculous result.

Pre-season friendlies are all about building confidence and getting the players into condition for the season ahead.

Yes different players were used and different formats introduced, but do me a favour, getting beat by Tranmere, with the so called talent we have at our club, that's embarrassing in anybody's language.

Still it was only a friendly..............
Jesus Christ, give it a break

Gerrard seemed pretty angry, not just disappointed in his reaction. I feel we'll see some players leave soon if this is how they treat a chance given to them by the manager.

Kelly surely must be giving himself a chance. He has a decent range off passing and looks to have a decent attitude.

Know a lad who has connections at Riss County. They really liked the lad said his attitude was first class.

We just got beat by a 4th tier English side. People have a right to be disappointed by that, particularly with the CL qualifiers quickly approaching.
With half of our 1st team missing and only the 2nd 45 mins for the rest. I’m relaxed

He's the ideal man to come in and replace Davis. Whether that's when Davis gets rested for a game or its just to 'spell' him for the last 20-30 minutes that will be better for him than elsewhere. His style of play is ideally suited to our passing game. I don't see him learning any more elsewhere with the ball flying over his head. He knows he can fit in at this level (the SPFL), he has the confidence and ability, its just about developing everything to a higher level now.

Of the two games we've seen so far, he and Bassey are the two that can be most satisfied they haven't let themselves down.
I think some of this might depend on having the 5 of 9 available subs again.

If you have that you can probably afford one to be a specialist Davis replacement. If it's 3 from 7 then the subs need to cover multiple positions plus offer "something different" and the 3 going on will probably be attacking options.

Agree about Bassey and Kelly making the best impression of the back-ups. I'd add McCrorie as well and I thought Mayo was okay this afternoon out of position - less so mid week.

Edmundson, Barker, Jones to name three. Won’t label them as dross but don’t see much in Middleton or Simpson all.
To be honest I’d have guessed most of those. I know Simpson is new in the door but I don’t see much potential in him. Middleton I think hasn’t kicked in enough. The other three simply aren’t good enough.

Players were poor today. But that is what preseason is about. Some need moved on. and soon.
Some of the songs today were embarrassing. Those singing that shite and those making excuses for them need to go find something else to do. Rugby, ice hockey anything just go and find another club to drag down.
Singing was embarassing , I say this a lovelr of many of our songs , but this was not the arena !

just saw the highlights, no doubt about it, quite a few players not up to speed yet as to be expected. I never really get too upset or happy on friendly results, getting beat by Tranmere doesn't make us shite just as if we beat real madrid and/or arsenal wouldn't make us world beaters, the only gauge I take from these games is the amount of improvement still required on both the team as a whole and each player individually, looks like we've a fair bit to go, luckily gerrard and co knows what's still needed to be done

As suspected, the manager is not a particularly happy bunny.

I echo his disappointment with regard to our performance in the final third. Very poor.

I think quite a few, maybe all of the fringe players today done themselves no favors. They won’t get many opportunities and simply have to shine when they do. I really didn’t see anything out of any of them that will have our regular starters worried about any kind of fight for their positions.

It’s harsh that they get measured different but these aren’t friendlies to get match time and fitness for them. These are the very few opportunities they will get to become first team players.

Doubt tranmere will somehow end up in the Champions league qualifiers. I think some people would rather we lost competitive games!

Today and all friendlies mean diddly, but one thing I am a bit surprised about is the fringe players not putting in a right shift to try get in the managers thoughts. If it was me I'd busting a gut to stick in a good performance to try get in the team.

Whilst I refrained from overreacting from today and was quite calm about it all, here’s the one thing I will say. Steven Gerrard as our manager has asked for and earned our trust over the last few years, we have given in abundance. If he is unhappy with today then you can bet your bottom dollar there will be a reaction. The result isn’t what we wanted but the man in charge is the man to sort it ASAP
