Tav looked so far off it today

And this season?

And this season he's still captain of a side who are top of the league, has contributed 4 assists and 1 goal all of which includes an assist that got us into the Europa League group stages and he single handedly won us the game at St Johnstone with his goal and last ditch tackle to stop St J equalising.

He, like many others in the side, have yet to find their feet consistently this season but James Tavernier is far from our main problems right now.

What would you say are our main problems right now?

people talking about tavs level? tavs stats are good but could also make him out to be a better full back than he actually is. People need to remember also that tav has had an awful lot of bad games in his rangers career, people actually wanted Hodgson and Flanagan before him at one point. First 6 month of last season though he was outstanding

Lack of creativity from our forward players and when chances do present themselves players not taking them.

Do you think Tav is our problem?
I think our main problem is our failure to adapt when other teams prevent our FBs getting forward and getting balls into our strikers. Kent is a huge miss, Helander also and we desperately need Jack to return. Morelos looks like he'll never score again. Goldson looks like he's playing out his contract. As for Tav, it looks like he is not coping at all well with the pressure being put on him by the emergence of Patterson. Gerrard said it very clearly in July: he can't afford to leave either Tav or Patterson on the bench. Since then, they haven't been on the pitch together for a single minute. We can't pretend this isn't an issue when the manager himself has pointed it out. Something has to change before our season implodes.

I’ve already said that he should be dropped for a couple of games but teams don’t tend to change captains season by season. Well at least sane teams anyway. What team changes captains every season? Or do you think the captaincy should change depending of the form of the captain?
It did with Amoruso so why not Tavernier?

This isn't intended as a criticism of Tav but there are at least 2 players at the club who are more natural leaders and possibly more deserving captains than he is: Goldson and Davis. Gerrard said 2 weeks ago Tav has been overused and he was right. Until last season, he took pens, corners and free-kicks, while being our main provider of assists and team captain. That was way too much to ask of any player. Tav has given Rangers a great deal but he can't keep his place in the team based on previous years' stats. Particularly not when his understudy arguably offers more than Tav does.

I think the captain should be dropped if he is horrendously and so consistently out of form.

Dont you

Stolen from above

His last assist was 2 months ago mate. Since then he's had 73 cross attempts over 6 games, and only 4 finding a Rangers player and 0 assists. That's the poorest conversion rate in our team by a distance.

People make out that Patterson is outstanding everytime he plays. He has had some moments of quality and his energy is excellent but hes been pretty average in most games this season, Bassey stood out more.

He had a shocker in the Scotland Isreal game, running into players and losing possession everytime had the ball.

He gets away with it because he is young and has bags of potential plus the fact a large section of our support just don't seem to like Tav, some used to want Hodson in front of him!

I'm a huge fan of Patterson but he is nowhere near Tavs level yet IMO.
How does Tav away with it then? Patterson at least has youth and inexperience as an excuse. I’m not sure what Tav’s excuse is this season.

Seemed to be 2nd to every ball, easily out muscled and skinned multiple times and absolutely woeful going forward. Looked nothing like himself in all honesty. If I was Nathan Patterson I'd be disappointed not to be in the team for Thursday after a performance like that from Tav.
Patterson will start Thursday for sure. The heat is on now for Tav as he’s got a player that will inevitably take his place within the next year breathing down his neck. Hopeful that makes him better. We shall see

Agreed.

55 was One Last Dance for too many of our players.

Tav, Goldson, Borna, Morelos to name a few probably more.

We have gambled on the poets not being able to rebuild and challenge us within a season and more so than that 40m with reaching the champions league.

They look like a team who’s improving and blowing teams away domestically within 20 minutes and we look like a team that’s coming off the rails if we haven’t already done so.

Tav gives away a pointless free kick in the build up , Tav allows Halkett to step away and get a free header but is blameless?
The pointless free kick was cleared to near the half way line,it was then played to the left where a deflection off of Kamara ended up a corner.
McGregor has decided to come for the cross, that goal is all on him and he knew it.

Morelos not taking chances and playing with his usual fire and spirit is our biggest issue
Morelos has been ineffective all season. We have to strengthen our attacking and CB options in January. Both Celtic and Hearts have scored more and conceded fewer goals than we have. You don't win titles if you can't score and can't keep clean sheets

First two lines in a nutshell.

Yeah, this analysis says otherwise - maybe the problem is with other players not getting into the right areas when the balls come into the box?

The free kick was cleared and you illustrated the point perfectly, the keeper drops the ball but you want to blame Tav it's embarrassing

So Tav did not switch off and lose his man then?

I am not blaming Tav , it is clear the keeper messed up but that does not excuse Tav for switching off does it?

Look, doesn’t matter a fk if he’s the Captain or not. It’s not as if he’s John Greig ffs. He has more poor games than good ones recently and the Manager has a duty to have a look at his young International replacement right back to step in. That’s the reason you supposedly have competition for a position.

Do you think Tav is our problem?
I don't think anyone is saying he is the only problem but we are losing goals through defensive errors by him that are costly and getting little from him going forward, I don't want to go over old ground but Tav has previous with really costly errors especially in defending, the hibs Cup final several big euro games and against the scum at their midden to name a few and he is badly out of form so if Gerrard is doing his job then he should drop to the bench until Patterson has a bad spell and he would then have another chance to prove himself.

It won't make him better unfortunately simply because he is a player who when he has a good game thrives on it but when his confidence is low he can't handle it, and that's his problem at the moment.

What goals have we lost because of Tav this season?

The clamour to blame him for the goal yesterday, in any way shape or form, is the utter desperation we've become used to with some fans looking for any opportunity to blame him for any goal we concede.

Tav should have been sold in the summer.
Thats the model
At that point due to his age, length of remaining contract and profile, he was at his optimum cash in value.

Patterson should have been given the number 2 Jersey and advanced into the absolute class act that he has the potential of becoming.

We (Gerrard) is stunting Patterson's progress.

With very little game time, he will soon want away to a club that will give him minutes on the pitch.
And we wil get no where near what we should if his career is not managed to maximum effect.

Well yes I’ve already said that but your point was on the captaincy, that Gerrard made a mistake making him captain, not him being dropped. The captain point has proven now to be the correct captain over the time Gerrard has been here.

Tav when on form for which he has for most of Gerrard’s time here has led from the front which is what you want your captain to do. And he will pull up his teammates on the park, we seen that last season especially. With no crowds in you could really here who the vocal leaders on the pitch were and that was tav and Goldson.

Tav has always lead from the front and never hid, which is why he’s captain, and it’s funny you listed Davis of more deserving of captaincy. Davis when he was captain here first time around was criticised every week for being weak as a captain.

Tav and Goldson on the pitch are out vocal leaders last season when you could here the players on the pitch proved that.

Problem being there is that no one wanted to buy Tavernier.

Tav was stupid giving away that free kick but it did not lead to their goal, their goal came minutes later fs. Plenty of football in between that and a simple cross for McGregor to deal with.

We didn't lose the goal from the right flank either...
Guess you'll need to reread my post. I said we lose most goals from our right flank. Buy the way, check the footage of the goal and see who is standing beside Halkett ball watching for the goal ffs.

Malmo's 2nd in Sweden.

Making him captain makes him virtually undroppable
Hes a defender who can't defend

Aye but he scores lots of goals
Not any more

Aye but he creates lots of chanced for others
Not any more

But he's great from the penalty spot
Not any more

But he's great going forward
Not any more.

The only thing that's keeping him in the first team is the fact he was made captain and Gerrard doesn't want to embarrass him by benching him for a long period of time
