Chesterfield 3 Rangers 0 Anglo Scottish Cup - 40 years ago today.

Was at chesterfield went to Stockport before game for a bevvy because we knew pubs were shut Lleft game at halftime abysmal night and game, but we found a boozer that was open in Chesterfield ,pretty drunken day/night.Went to the old firm game on the Saturday pumped them three nil so that made up for it mad times.

We had a tired Rangers team by then, big changes were needed. Under John Greig's leadership we fell short sadly, but they did come and we lived off them for the next 25 odd years. Goodness, how things go around in circles, here's to the next 25. ;)

I nipped a local midden after the match. Got a cloth tit.
Definitely the highlight of a dreadful night.
We missed the worst penalty I’ve ever seen in my life.
Colin McAdam if memory serves.
Billy McKay was the only player who turned up that night.

Edit. Just viewed the clip.
Funny how memory plays tricks.
That’s not how I remembered the penalty.
Had it my head it trundled through the mud.
The penalty was still dreadful.

Was at both games. Took 2 days off work to go to Chesterfield. Met one of my pals who was at college in Hull at the game. Thankfully don't remember much about the actual game other than the score.

Remember Mean Machine chants and getting a pennant from Tommy Craig the trainer before the game. He and some other backroom staff handed out Rangers memorabilia to fans in the hope that it would avert any crowd trouble. The weather and the abject display did the job.

I remember having to buy a carry out as the pubs were closed because big bad Rangers were in town. Sat in the pissing rain getting soaked and bevvied then getting humped in a terrible game. That was a long soggy journey home. 24 years old and daft as a brush. Ahhh the memories.
18 year old and felt pretty much the same.

I remember standing on the terracing at Chesterfield thinking that it was the nadir of my Rangers supporting life.
Total and utter humiliation. Their fans were going mental beating the Glasgow Rangers, and fair play to them it was their night. Despite there being a full card of European football that night, on the bus on the way back the national BBC radio sports news led with their victory.
As the OP said we gubbed the Scum in the next game. Football schizophrenia indeed.

Some great fan footage on this clip but also a reminder of one of the worse results in the clubs history.

Rangers actually responded to this shocker days later by beating Celtic by the same scoreline at Ibrox.
McAdam scored two against the scum, I think?

I was at it, but the horror of that defeat to Chesterfield still resonates

I was at the Coventry v St Mirren Game. 1-1 both teams had won their respective FA Cup. Return game never got played but Coventry City had a replica cup thing in their Trophy Cabinet. If I recall correctly Ian Ferguson played for St Mirren in that game.
Was also at Chesterfield game. Bunked off work with a few other Apprentices and went down. We only decided to go that day. Pissed it down, Police escort off the Motorway, Pubs shut, Rangers got gubbed but back in work next day with nobody any the wiser we bunked off.

Ferguson did play in that game. The teams couldn’t agree on a date for the second leg, so it was scrapped.

I was there.
Carry out taken off us at Central prior to boarding the train....and that was arguably the highlight of the day.

I was living in Birmingham at the time and went over to Chesterfield with relatives from Derby, bother later on, bad night all round.
Wow 40 years!

I was only about 11 at the time, but I do remember it being greeted with utter horror and outrage.

Which is funny because no one took the Anglo Scottish Cup seriously - St.Mirren were the holders that year and Chesterfield went on to win it after beating us - so it’s kind of bemused me since that we still put it up there alongside the likes of Berwick, Kaunas and Progres as the worst results in our history.

I was there train broke down on way home

I went down on Atlantis bus from Clydebank.
I think there were 7 arrests and 5 were from the Atlantis bus!
Can't remember the name of the place we stopped but I was on Pernod and blackcurrant and sank them like water as a 16 year old does.
The previous night me and my mate had climbed up flagpole on a boat at Arnott Youngs shipyard and blagged a massive union flag.
We spent the night into the morning painting Glasgow Rangers across it and it was f cking beautiful.
Unfortunately after my Pernods I ended up pulling it down from luggage rack and spewing all over it.co
Off the bus and into a big bin with it, bastard!
I remember all the shops and pubs all boarded up on way to ground.
Still have no memory whatsoever of the game but the following Saturday fair made up for it
who was the big guy that owned The Atlantis mate around that time he used to get me tickets for games

I was there. Couldn't get a drink in Chesterfield. Spent the night in Sheffield.
Same here mate,we were in Sheffield early afternoon, the rest is a blur.

Think i Can remember Celtc getting beat off of Burnley in that competition
They lost 2-1 at home to Burnley the same night as we were beating Juventus 2-0 at Ibrox.

Burnley were a second division club back then yet beat Celtic both home & away ( 1-0& 2-1)

We , at the same time were knocking the Italian national team out of Europes premier competition.

Not a bad couple of weeks iirc.

I was down there as well, John Greig jumped into the crowd right beside me & my mate. When I went back to work on the Friday one of the tims said to me he thought big McCloy had deliberately let those goals in cos we didn't want to be in the tournament. I agreed with him, well I wasn't going to say "naw, we were just sh*te". Then when we gubbed them 3-0 on the Saturday I told him he was smart to notice our lack of effort on a quagmire of a pitch cos we were saving ourselves for his mob.

What's the tune to this song?

Incredible to think they won the league that season.

I was gonna ask that very question, why is it talked about as such a bad result? Was the tournament not just a glorified friendly?

Was before I was born so know nothing about it other than when I read on here. My dad always spoke of Berwick and Hamilton as terrible results but never really mentioned this.

I was 9 at the the time and only heard the score when my dad came in from nightshift. Not the greatest start start your day.
I can’t remember what everyone trudging about at school, looking as if their dog had just died died. It was total humiliation and grief mixed into one. Horrible!

Worst i've ever felt leaving a football ground was May 21st 1979.

Should have been back to back trebles but for some negative team selections at the start of the season. Won only 1 of our opening 9 league games. Finished by losing 4 of the final 10 games.

Defeated Juventus & PSV (2 of the best teams in Europe) but could only beat Aberdeen & Celtic in 2 of the 8 league games but defeated both in the League Cup.

Strange old season.

My old man still goes home and away and he says that 4-2 defeat to 10 men at the piggery is still his worst experience watching Rangers.

The less said about Chesterfield the better. Was at Ibrox on the Saturday which I think its fair to say was a surprisingly easy win. Another win which was easier than expected was the Sep 85 OF match at Ibrox which again was a 3 0 win. Was just to the right of the directors box that day and back to Lochinch after for a fair few bevvies.

November 85

Persnickety loyal:)

Still can't believe the way we played that evening, especially after we had beat them 1-0 in the league a couple of weeks earlier.

John Greigs insistence on treating away games in the league in exactly the same manner as an away game v Juventus cost us imo.

Aye, the league wasnt done and dusted after the Hampden match but it felt that was a big game to win. Sclaffed goal from MacDonald I think.

Wee Alex had a great knack of scoring important goals in the bigger games. Think he scored our opening goal a couple of weeks later as well as playing his part in Doyle being sent off.
It was indeed a "Sclaffed goal" however we were streets ahead of them that day and yet turn up as though we're playing the 1970 Brazil team a couple of weeks later. Truly baffling.

I was at that game
2 days off work train broke down on the way home
I seem to remember getting escorted from the train station to the ground anybody confirm that might be thinking of the Villa game though

The noise around this tie was a Rangers supporter called Phil bonnyman who played for Chesterfield, I was at the 2nd leg at Ibrox.

The 1st leg was at Ibrox. They scored pretty much from the kick off. We got an equaliser but that was as good as it got. Dreadful times.

I remember this because my grandpa was absolutely spewing about the result, he was going tonto.

About ten years ago I was on holiday with the family and the kids meet pals, as they do. The wife starts chatting to the other mum and we end up having a drink with them one night. The guy turns up with a strip on and I said to him what’s that strip. He replies Chesterfield and immediately I say aw ffs. He knew right away that I was a Rangers supporter, prick.

Went down on the Partick Loyal bus and had 3-0 for Chesterfield in the bus correct score sweep and when Mcadam went to take the penalty at 3-0 I thought just miss it and I would get something and think winnings was £6.
