Decent shirt sponsor

We aim low as we are run like a local bowling club. You only have to see the two bob outfits that we have allowed on our kits in recent years to see that
What a stupid unqualified post. You have zero clue how much we have made from sponsorship. Our brand has grown dramatically with all the sponsors we have taken on ti a level where it has allegedly surpassed all sponsorship income from the past. The couple of companies who wanted to invest in us and went out the game make zero difference to us. They still paid upfront so we didn't lose money.

We have been shirt sponsored by the people willing to provide us with the most money. It's a simple as that. Or I suppose you would rather have say Mercedes sponsoring us for half of what Unibet do. Just cause its a better name.

Remind me who our sponsors were when we were the richest club in the UK?

Yeah but the amount of fans around the world, that must have some pulling power. We still get noticed in Europa league and al over the internet
Price of football podcast, sponsors don't really care about the retail sales which is why they will produce sponsor less versions.
It is all about TV exposure and why Europe and CL exposure is paramount for us.

Totally different global world today. Back then rangers games were barely on tv and European tournaments didn’t have anywhere near the level of finance or exposure.

There is absolutely no reason why rangers shouldn’t be able to attract higher level of sponsorship. How much have aim, socomec, bitci , Tomkit etc paid to have their names plastered all over our kits?

We should definitely be doing better, given JB's background.
Which is a bit of a testament to his standing or lack off.
We have for example had deep European runs which should be better exploited and a global audience of x million.
Thats a lot of eyes on us.

Depends if you have a board with the contacts to get a proper sponsor I suppose.
Good point.

Businessmen who have made millions and a guy who was in charge of getting sponsors for UEFA won't have a wee black book of contacts and associates.

Getting them to invest when our day to day exposure is Scottish football is a different issue.

Also define "proper".

What's a 'proper' sponsor? Genuine question, how are you defining that?

Surely the company that pays us the most is the best deal for us?

One that is befitting of a club of our stature in European football. not having socomec, sportsmongo etc all over the kit for a pittance.

I get what your saying about going with the highest bidder but it totally depends on what people you have running the club and the contacts they have.

I could give you one reason.
Some companies won't want to spend the money being asked to put their name on Rangers jerseys.
It's really as simple as that.

It's a pretty big reason too. If a higher level of sponsorship is not available to us then we can't have it. This is basic common sense.

Looking at the English Premier League even most of those sides aren't exactly taking to the pitch with glamorous sponsors across their jerseys so maybe being on the front of a football jersey isn't seen as a good way to spend marketing budget?

Probably the league with the most money in the world and you would hardly look at that list of sponsors and think that there are some real prestige brands on there, would you? 8 out of the 20 are gambling brands!

Last time I checked we get £1.5 million a season from unibet/32red.

The problem as others have said is our league, then the 2012 troubles we had and then the boycots to remove the spivs hurt us.

Given we are now with settled partnerships and do well in Europe and hopefully domestically, when contracts are we might get some better offers. However a “bigger/better company” does mean bigger and better deals.
1.5 million is such a poor amount. Unfortunately with the league we play in we are stuck.

I spent six months in 2002/03 looking for a shirt sponsor for Rangers at the request of the club
At the time Marin Bain briefed that he would rather have a deal with a sponsor who didn’t also appear on the Celtic kit
We spoke to tens of businesses and the closest we got to a big brand was Sega. But they wanted the deal to include the stadium naming rights and control over the big screens and advertising
The money didn’t match what the club wanted. In fact I don’t think the board wanted a stadium naming sponsor which was fair enough.
We had an offer from Sterling (the furniture shop) which was higher financially than the eventual deal done with Carling
I understood why the club opted for a beer brand over a furniture store but the way it was handled by Bain still rankles with me 20 years on
I was waiting in reception to see him about the Sterling deal at 08.00 when his secretary said he wouldn’t be in until afternoon. When I asked why she told me he was at a photo shoot for the new sponsor. She handed me a copy of a newspaper with the page turned to the Carling sponsorship announcement
He wouldn’t take my calls for about a month after

Edit: I should add that it was a major problem, even then, getting big brands interested in Scottish clubs and the previous comments about the fear of doing one side of the old firm made it even harder

I think supporters just have high expectations without any real understanding of how these processes work.

People imagining the new look Rangers first team is going to come strolling onto the pitch next season in a nice new Adidas kit that references historical tops while looking new and exciting with a beautiful PlayStation logo on the front. Meanwhile the shop at the stadium is selling these new kits at £40 a pop with all names and numbers on the back being done for free and the club has announced that there will only be two jerseys this season and only one set of training gear and it will all be sold at low low prices.

That's where I was going to go with it next.

People want blue-chip sponsors but I'd say out of that EPL list, ('the biggest league in the world'), only 4 or 5 are blue-chip.

Most of them are your generic bookie/casino (probably less reputable ones than Kindred Group / Unibet)
