Help us avoid Emiliano Sala payment: Cardiff seek Premier League clubs' advice on escaping £15m transfer fee

Cardiff City have contacted other Premier League clubs in an attempt to establish whether there may be grounds to avoid paying the full £15million transfer fee being demanded by Nantes for Emiliano Sala, The Mail on Sunday can reveal.

Letters sent in the past few days by lawyers acting for the club request help in ‘fighting off Nantes’ legal claim’, according to one source. They ask clubs for assistance in ‘sharing your knowledge of Sala as a player’.

The correspondence from a Cardiff law firm describes Sala as ‘the player that Cardiff tried to sign’, phrasing which makes it clear that the club believe they may not have to pay all — or indeed any — of the record transfer fee

Details of the letters — which Cardiff on Sunday confirmed were sent — emerged as manager Neil Warnock and chief executive Ken Choo arrived in Argentina for the player’s wake and funeral.

The Mail on Sunday can reveal that Cardiff’s decision to approach Premier League clubs publicly linked with Sala is partly motivated by transfer broker Willie McKay’s admission in an email to the striker that he had sought to artificially inflate the price. McKay told Sala he had told the media of rival interest ‘just to stimulate interest in you’.

The club are seeking to establish whether there was indeed any interest at all from other clubs. McKay’s email to Sala listed Everton and West Ham as clubs he had linked the player to, though Crystal Palace, Fulham, Burnley and Wolves were also reported to be keen

The Mail on Sunday revealed two weeks ago that one club had been publicly linked to Sala simply on the basis of a text message being sent signalling the player’s availability.

A second club was bemused to receive the letter from Cardiff’s lawyers suggesting they had also been linked. ‘This simply isn’t true in our case,’ said a source. ‘We never had an interest in Sala. We didn’t even watch him play.’

But Sala is by no means the first player to have been transferred after being artificially linked with other clubs. This is one of the oldest tricks in the wheeler-dealer world of player acquisition. It is difficult to see how Cardiff can possibly cite this practice to avoid paying the first £5m tranche of the fee they had agreed with Nantes for the player.

Cardiff have said they will ‘do the right thing’ but have indicated they ‘first want full facts disclosed about what happened and the involvement of agents with Nantes in the deal’.

The number of brokers involved in the deal is also understood to have concerned them. Some at the top of the club only became aware of the number taking a cut after The Mail on Sunday report which listed them. Cardiff want to establish what part each of those individuals played

He'd probably still be alive if Cardiff never got involved. He wouldn't have been on that rickety plane. And while I'm at it, they shouldn't even be in the English leagues in the first place, enjoying cash they shouldn't have access to. Pay up you tight bastards.

This shouldn’t be in the papers, this should be left at least until the guy is laid to rest.

Also, would Cardiff mention these facts had the player managed to get to the club and play, scoring goals etc......I think not.

They are using a guy’s tragic circumstances to try get out of paying money......Nantes have sold player, he was on way to Cardiff so as long as contract signed they have no case.

The rest of EPL clubs should tell them where to go.

I’m not sure Cardiff can be held responsible for the plane. Willie McKay, though, might be a different story entirely.

They should just pay it. £15m might be a record transfer fee but overall it'ss really nothing to an EPL team.

If the refuse to pay it will cost them more in the long term, who'd want to sign for a club that's acted so scummily?

Terrible from Cardiff. Seems like they are looking to use any legal loophole available to them so as not to pay the fee that they willingly agreed to days before this horrible accident.

None of this should be made public (especially so soon) but it does perhaps point to insurance not going to cover their sorry arses if they are looking to take this stance.

Yes, it’s really poor. Cardiff are liable and behaving like this is despicable.

They are obviously resigned to going down and are trying to clear the decks in terms of costs.

Nantes were cùnts for demanding the payment before they’d even found Sala’s body. Cardiff are cùnts for trying to worm their way out of the deal when the contract had already been signed.

Neither club is showing any class and both are painting a very bad image of themselves here.

Agree, but now it’s done and dusted, CCFC should now be paying up.

Dispicable actions from both parties, Nantes being very aggressive. Work away quietly in the background if you must but common decency dictates you allow the families time to deal with the victims passing.

Wouldn’t you have thought that kind of due diligence would be done before finalising the deal?

Doing anything like this before the funeral is ghoulish and sums up the EPL for the soulless cash cow it has become, devoid of class or decency. Nantes aren't much better than Cardiff for demanding payment before the plane was found (or body was recovered maybe).

Willie McKay tried to artificially raise the price. I hope a big spotlight is shone on this reptile.

However, Cardiff should have carried out due diligence before they agreed a fee in order to get a proper valuation of the player. Bit late now.

Cardiff are very comfortable playing the grieving widow role but are sliming out of accountability. Embarrassing behaviour. Nantes are entitled to their payment regardless of the circumstance. They are a business and have dependencies. I blame Diana

Reporter on talkSPORT said thatThe insurance company would pay out the transfer fee but the issue is the fact that Cardiff also liable for the players contract and any other fees he said that could reach another 15 million

He also said that Cardiff could try and switch liability to the person who hired the plane if the pilot doesn’t have the right license he said that may come down to McKay or Nantes
If it is Mckay the surely that would end him

Surely no matter whst murky dealings went on regarding agents, etc the only thing that really matters is whether there is legal transfer documents signed by all parties stating an agreed transfer fee. It seems to me Cardiff are doing all they can to find a reason not to cough up, which is pretty despicable.

Whatever the issues are regarding money both clubs could have shown some decency and waited till a week at least after he was buried before pursuing the matter.

I don't see what Nantes have done wrong to be honest.

Cardiff are 100% in the wrong here.
They stsrted demanding money prior to body being found which was poor.

They are due a fee though and either Cardiff or an insurer should be psying.

I’m sure McKay has a lifetime ban on being an agent
