IFAB discussing increasing half time to 25 minutes to accommodate superbowl style entertainment

If they want to improve the game a spectacle how about they instruct their refs to do their jobs.
Ball no more than 6 secs in keepers hands.
Throw ins from where the ball went out.
Book players who dont retreat 10 yards at free kicks and corners.
Book players for time wasting early in the game not 89th minute.
Keep the game flowing and people will enjoy it more. I pay to see football not 25 mins of pipebands and kids 5 a sides

Considering these people that are in charge are there to ensure the interests of game are kept at heart, they don’t half have a good go at ruining it at every opportunity

Between this, world cups every 2 years and any other nonsense that has been suggested, the game is on the way out
Exactly mate. I enjoyed a cracking game of football last week between stockport and Bolton. A proper game of football with 2 teams going all out to win it.

The last thing I want to see is some americanised crap brought into the game. The NFL has no soul, teams can just pack up and move elsewhere to the highest bidder.

The food/drink courts are sensational in North America, I couldn’t quite understand why people headed into the ground a few hours early when I went over for a game

Obviously got tailgating too but inside the stadiums/arenas the food is class. I imagine teams like spurs being the same
I've been to a few NBA games in the States and I was told to go at least an hour + half before it started to watch the players practice, it was like watching the Harlem Globetrotters with all the trick shots etc.

Also, as you say the food and drink available was on another planet compared to the utter sh*te we get offered here.

I think this is the point.

If the concourses were better at Ibrox, with space for some basic seating like you get in a food court etc, and crucially alcohol could be served, then I actually think this would be quite good, and quite a money spinner for the club.

Not so fussed for the half time entertainment, perhaps something more kids orientated wouldn’t be a bad idea.

However, this would be a disaster whilst the Scottish Authorities keep us in the dark ages regarding licensing laws.
I was at the Rugby on Saturday and booze was sold in the ground so we went there at least an hour before KO and stood having a couple of beers. We then had another can of Tenants to drink while in our seats during the second half.
I cannot imagine that working in a Scottish ground unless it was a small stadium with a tiny crowd.

If they want to do this for Champions League, European Championship, World Cup, etc finals then let them knock themselves out.

25 minute half time breaks in domestic league games would be far too long, and would bore spectators and players alike.

Part of the problem with bright ideas like this is how they are adopted across all levels of football… I’m sure that the half time interval is defined as a 15 minute break in the FIFA rulebook… so changing it in there means that domestic leagues would need to follow the rule. Or be exempt for some reason and then you’ve made an ass of your new rule because it’s clearly only there for squeezing more advertising money in the finals of big competitions.

The players will need to do another warm up for the 2nd half as their leg muscles will start stiffening up after 25mins of sitting in the dressing room. This is a crazy idea and I can't see it being adopted.

Let’s be honest 25 minutes is to sell 25 minutes of adverts from a tv point of view and stadiums to sell 25 minutes of grub and drinks

How would this affect injuries with players cooling too much before starting again without warm down and warm up

Half time is already the worst 15 mins of the weekend
%^*& adding 10 to it.

If its simply to introduce a half time show at a Champions League or World Cup final, then fair enough, dont agree with it, but money talks. If its anymore than that, they can get to fcuk. The superbowl half time show does my tits in, its a sport! Why does some no mark singer deserve to steal the limelight that is the pinacle of an athletes career? Its a joke and its disrespectful.

The half time Union Jackpot super draw sponsored by Gatorade.

First prize a VIP Tour of Dave Kings Wine Cellar

Second prize a sit down meal for two with broxi bear.

Then 55 winning tickets will receive a free Roll and Ham donated by the louden

January. Minus 6. Blasting wind. We don’t need another 10 mins to freeze our nuts off thanks

The game's lawmakers will discuss a request to increase half-time intervals from 15 minutes to 25 so that football can introduce Super Bowl-style entertainment midway through matches

The money-spinning idea came from CONMEBOL, the South American governing body who believed it would benefit their competitions, such as the Copa Libertadores, the final of which will be played between Palmeiras and Flamengo this Saturday.

Tweaking the laws would enable English football to likewise introduce extravagant half-time shows, such as live music midway through the FA Cup final at Wembley Stadium, if it wished.

Lawmakers IFAB will meet on Thursday for their Annual Business Meeting, chaired by world governing body FIFA.

The agenda for the meeting does not mention Law 7 - the section detailing how long half time may last - but Sportsmail understands it will be discussed at the end of the virtual gathering

It seems unlikely that CONMEBOL's request will be backed, however, with IFAB's advisory panels having already expressed their concerns that a longer period of inactivity could increase the risk of players picking up injuries.

The current laws of the game state 'players are entitled to an interval at half-time, not exceeding 15 minutes'. A similar attempt to increase the length to 20 minutes in 2009 was unsuccessful.

FIFA were behind that push but supporters bashed it as a blatant attempt to commercialise the game and fill pockets.

CONMEBOL said their intention was to improve the spectacle for supporters, saying the television broadcast of half-time shows is greatly received in other sports around the world.

The federation are understood to have even claimed the extra time would enable coaches to better prepare their players tactically for the second half, thereby improving the quality of the football on show.

Yet the other consideration is how much more money there would be to make from this extension, as evidenced by American football's extravaganza each year.

Half-times in the NFL tend to last around 12 minutes. In the Super Bowl, however, they can last up to 30 minutes.

Their intervals can prompt as much post-match discussion as the game itself, with it said to have cost advertisers $5.5million (£4.1m) to secure a 30-second ad in 2021 when Canadian singer The Weeknd performed.
Given that a queue for a dehydrated pie is a minimum of 30 minutes this could work. :) No thanks. Wouldn’t surprise me to see this in Qatar.

What nonsense. The SuperBowl is one occassion a season. Every other NFL half time is like ours

25 mins of half time entertainment?
Bring it on. We could even have the Union Bears sing a wee song or two on the lead up to half time to introduce the cabaret.

What good is sitting alone In your room?
Come hear the music play.
Life is a Cabaret, old chum,
Come to the Cabaret.

Put down the knitting,
The book and the broom.
It's time for a holiday.
Life is a Cabaret, old chum
Come to the Cabaret.

It had better be good, we don’t leave our seats at half time.

Also, anyone remember this?

At one of the cup finals (Hampden) in the programme and in the pre-match publicity the big blow up, wavy doll things were listed as part of the day’s entertainment.

Let’s hope our entertainment supremo doesn’t think that’s as good as it gets!

Whatever happened to the RFC majorettes/dancers who used to come out and entertain us at half time? Do we want them back?

I'm gettin auld, seem to remember all night games kicked off at 7:30pm, half time was 10 mins. No substitutes, no away goals rule (3rd game or toss of a coin settled ties). Ah the good old days.

Wish they would %^*& off with this americanisation of football

Next it will be 4 quarter halfs

Used to get back to EK in time for a pint and the pubs shut at 10pm in those days.
