Johnny Hubbard – RIP ma wee pal

Back when the Daily Record group of companies had standards, here's a letter from 1949 concerning Johnny (the boy!) Hubbard's trial with Rangers. Great days.

Sleep tight Mr Hubbard. A sad loss to the Rangers family, thoughts are with all his nearest and dearest.

i had the great pleasure of meeting both mr hubbard and mr simpson at an early RST do at a swankie hotel by the armadillo. photos, signatures etc were never a problem. and even asking questons that my auld uncle(god rest him) asked me to ask on his behalf never troubled them.real ambassadors for our great club. theyl both be winning trebles in heaven.god bless them.

RIP Mr Hubbard.
Played before my time, but I remember Sir Alex Ferguson stating a goal by Mr Hubbard against them at their dump was the best he ever seen.
The penalty King gathered the ball at the edge of his own box and ran the full length of the field before putting the ball in the met.
Any older fans remember it or lucky enough to have seen it?

Sad news. Met Mr Hubbard numerous times at Ibrox and would stand and listen to him telling great stories of better times.

My old man used to kid on that he was the penalty king growing up and he met Mr Hubbard at the front door. Totally starstruck. A real gentleman who quietly went about his business. RIP

A thanks to Paisleyprod and PrestwickBear for sharing some memories of Mr Hubbard with me.

Tribute To Johnny Hubbard MBE (16th December 1930 - 21st June 2018)

His name was Johnny Hubbard, Oh how we loved that man
To wear the Light Blue shirt was God's masterplan
He wore it with great honour and no one can deny
That man called Johnny Hubbard was the apple of our eye

His birth place was Pretoria, Ibrox was his home
He graced the hallowed turf with grace and great aplomb
He terrorised defenders, ran amok down that left wing
When it came to taking penalties he was proudly called the King

On the First Day of the New Year in Nineteen Fifty Five
It had been appointed, his greatest hour did arrive
He put Celtic to the sword and did it with a smile
For Johnny scored a hat trick in the Johnny Hubbard style

Oh Johnny you were down to earth ,You were one of us
A supporter of the Rangers who never made a fuss
You shared your precious memories of all your glory days
The pleasure was all ours but your is all the praise

We are proud and honoured that such a man as you
A man of great distinction so loyal and so true
Loved and served our club until you heard the call
To leave the marble staircase to walk down Heaven's Hall

Yet we know that you will be with us whenever Rangers play
Amongst the Called and Chosen down dear old Ibrox way
We will feel your presence just like we felt your love
Mr Hubbard we salute you sir, Rest In Peace above

Sad news. The passing of a great indeed.
A man who helped make the club special.
We are all today a wee bit poorer.
Your anchor always held .....Mr Hubbard.

Deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Johnny Hubbard.
Deepest sympathy to his family & friends.
Also, one of the oldest members of our Rangers family.
Rangers Legend Forever.

Johnny Hubbard was one of my gym teachers at Ardrossan Academy in the mid sixties. He was a really nice guy.

I met him in Morrisons in Ayr a few years ago and he remembered his time in Ardrossan. It was astonishing that although I thought he had been there for at least two years he said he had only been there for six weeks. Such was the impression he made on me.

Sad to know he’s gone. One of life’s good guys.

So sad to learn of the death of the great Johnny Hubbard. He was before my time but as a boy growing up I often heard his name mentioned and that he'd "never missed a penalty". Well, he was as nearest damnit to that achievement to make no difference. I was privileged to have my photo taken with him when he attended the re-dedication of Mr Struth's grave in September 2016. He never failed the test set by that great man of a true Ranger. We can pay no greater tribute than that he was the very exemplar of what Mr Struth envisaged. RIP our Penalty King!

Very sad news - all thoughts with his close friends and family -
Rip Johnny
You will always be appreciated & remembered

Just back from a day at Busch Gardens on my last day in Florida before coming home.
Logged on and read this.

Absolutely gutted to read that a true Ranger, a proper gentleman, and simply a lovely man is gone.

Mr Hubbard is immortal, as all Rangers legends are.

I feel honoured to have shared his company a couple of times.

RIP.

That’s a brilliantly written tribute.

One of the finest and most genuine people I've ever had the pleasure of meeting and will be sorely missed by all. Please pass on my heartfelt condolences to his family. GBNF

I had a brief chat with Johnny outside the main stand a few years ago. He was every bit the gentleman that people are recounting on this thread. It was a pleasure and a privilege to spend even just the few minutes in his company.

My other half helped coordinate his well deserved civic reception in Ayr a couple of years ago.

Real Rangers royalty, he earned his legend status and more. He'll never be forgotten.

RIP Sir.

I’ve met wee Johnny a few times and he was great to listen to,a lovely man, will be missed around Ibrox.
Sincere condolences to the Hubbard family .

There was a minutes silence at Ferguslie Cricket ground today for Mr Hubbard.

Their opponents today are Prestwick CC who Mr Hubbard played for.

Well done to Ferguslie CC and Prestwick CC.
