Jon Newsome on Battle of Britain

One of the greatest and most disappointing seasons ever watching Rangers. Tapie done us.

That season was when I started attending games regularly.

There's been plenty of highs and lows since then, but nothing has matched that season for me.

I was at sea during both games and had £100 bet on each game with a Leeds fan I worked with.
So I never saw the games at the time but we listened huddled round a shortwave radio on the back deck of the ship, happy days.

I was still at school then and couldn't get a ticket. BBC or STV showed the whole match with an hour's delay, so I had to wait patiently for that.
Ulster TV showed the first leg live and I headed out to my papas in Saltcoats to watch it on the relay lol

What was the story again about the game. Stuttgart ? had played an illegible player in the round before ?
Fantastic two games, they really did have it all. Shock goals, great strikes, breakaway goals, excellent saves the lot

STV had the rights up here had to the show the 1st leg on delay as the SFA had a rule if another match was taking in Scotland so no live coverage for most of Scotland those in the Border region got to see with English commentary as it happened

Hearts were playing Standard Liege at Tynecastle

So long ago, younger fans wont believe that the game wasn't shown live on any tv channel and was only shown on a delayed transmission after the game. Unthinkable now.

Possibly the best game I’ve ever been at. Remember it like yesterday.
Same here, I remember flying up from Birmingham and the pubs around PRW were all bouncing and I struggled to get in. I actually had a spare ticket and the guy I sold it too wanted to marry me :D

Brought on a 4th foreigner so UEFA gave Leeds 3-0 win mean 4-4 on aggregate and a play-off match in Barcelona as a result

UEFA in meantime done the 2nd round draw and with Leeds victory meant 2 unseeded team met which won't have happened in normal circumstances

I read someone said Ulster tv showed the game live from Ibrox. I think Grampian tv did likewise and because most folk couldn't get it all hell descended on a wee village pub a couple of miles up the road. It was chockers, full of the usual poets, big roar went up when macallister scored but Rangers did it. I can remember hearing on the way out that the away goal would be enough......aye right....WATP. ....

Thanks Al,remember now.F*ck me where do the years go

Can you imagine the meltdown on FF about that if it had existed in those days?

It was a strange one. The atmosphere pre-game and for 90 seconds was better than anything else I have heard at Ibrox, even Old Firm games. When McAllister scored you could have heard a pin drop. The atmosphere was really good after that but somehow it never quite hit the same heights as it did pre-game and for the first 90 seconds.

Great memories, thought the worst when McAllister pinged it in at Ibrox, but we were worthy winners over the two games.

Leeds did have some amount of chances in that 2nd leg, Goram and our back 4 were magnificent.

That said, we thoroughly deserved to progress.

I was there. In the main stand. One of the things that surprised me was how tough David Batty is. He won so many battles with Ian Ferguson and not clean either. He kicked and elbowed Fergie all night. Batty is the only player I can remember bossing Fergie like that.
The Leeds subs at Ibrox are worth a mention too. David Rocastle, great player who passed away at only 33 from cancer. And our own Rod Wallace!

Yip, the silence was deafening when McAllister scored. But the Bears had rallied by the time the game restarted.
The build up to the second leg, from English journalists, was about how many Leeds were going to win by. The more it went on the more you knew we were going to do it.

Over the two legs I realised Goram was something special. As was that full team.
As above the atmosphere for 90 seconds was as good as the Kiev game then Leeds scored. It took about a minute then a great roar erupted around Ibrox with everyone giving it get into these bastards, c'mon the Rangers ...

That was the quietest I've ever heard Ibrox. Then we fought back!
There were actually some Leeds supporters in the main stand. I saw a small clutch of guys going mental when McAllister's goal went in. They probably didn't intend to make it so blatantly obvious but what a screamer of a goal it was. The glory of it just overwhelmed them and they gave it laldy. No idea how they got tickets.

I remember sitting in the govan and seeing one or two leeds fans jump up cheering in random areas including one phil taylor lookalike near me cue some bears then getting some fly digs in before getting told to get to fůck and rock steady escorting them oot.

Imagine coming all that way oy to give up your identity after a minute or two !

I know some did, but do any bears have stories of attending the return at elland rd ?

I was in the Govan rear that night. There were a few Leeds fans there as well. The Bears did not take kindly to them.

I can remember Thomson the Liverpool player saying on Sky that Leeds would win by at least 3 goals in the return leg and Kenny Dalglish replying that he was totally underestimating Rangers and thought we would get a result at Elland Road.
What I also remember from the 1st leg was how disappointed I was when the half time whistle went. We were really on top of them and I'm sure if we had another 5 minutes we could have scored at least 1 more.

Went down to a pub in Troon as they had Ulster tv showing it live . Remember standing on Troon Station platform saying to a guy we'll beat them down there (most people didn't think we played well that night ). Bet them to win 2-0 at Elland Rd while my whole family took them to win 2-1 . They won the bets but i was happy as a pig at parkhead that we beat them and the rest is history :)

Maybe the best way to put yourself in their shoes is to imagine going into the home end at the piggery. Trying to be totally covert, no colours, being careful not to draw any attention or looks. Then Dorrans smashes a 30 yarder into the top corner after only 2 minutes. No holding back after that. If the stewards aren't sharpish next stop is the Queen Elizabeth!

Cheeky bugger, he thought that Leeds should have got through.
As I recall Leeds were well beaten in both games.
At one point in the second match, I thought that Rangers even took their foot of the gas.
Good team Leeds, but Rangers were much better.

Leeds put us under a lot of pressure at Elland Road.

The Goalie was magnificent.

Absolutely, apart from the first few minutes of the game at Ibrox, we horsed them. The second leg, they couldn't believe what was happening when Hatley scored. They were getting their arses handed to them.

That Leeds team hadn't been beaten at home for a long time and the Gers were in amongst them, properly. Outstanding stuff, really outstanding.

the things u remember now.
the tickets had leeds/stuttgart on them.
tickets went missing and were found in the back of a safe in the t.o, and we had to go and collect 2 days before game.

There were a few Leeds fans outside offering to swap tickets for Elland road for an Ibrox ticket.

Never saw any takers, but maybe some got swaps.

Was working away and my mum was watching the press for the ticket details for season book holders Unfortunately she missed the advert, and by the time I got back they were sold out!

Gutted, so on the night shut myself in my room until STV started transmission

There was an article in Follow Follow (I'll have a guess that it was number 28) about a group of Gers fans who got tickets for Elland Road and drove down in a rented Vauxhall Astra.

And to top it all, if possible did we not return and beat the piglets in their very own piggery the very n txt saturday?
