Already the crowd restrictions which had been put in place at the outbreak of the Second World War were beginning to be relaxed, with 16,000 being present at this match

The resumption of European football following the traditional winter break saw Rangers give one of their finest performances away from home, winning 3-2 in Rotterdam thanks to goals from Davie Wilson, Sammy Baird and Max Murray ,totally stunning the 50,000 crowd

United were to end the season by being relegated into the Second Division for the first time since 1937,and Rangers were to finish their campaign empty-handed. Thus only 22,215 were at Old Trafford, where John Greig, Derek Johnstone and Derek Parlane from the penalty spot gave Rangers the win
