Davie Robertson – former Aberdeen, Rangers and Leeds United stalwart - is a long way from home. In fact, he’s a long way from anywhere. He’s the new manager of Real Kashmir FC, and he’s left behind his wife and the millionaire lifestyle he earned from football, to live in a shared house in a city that regularly suffers violent protests and terrorist attacks.
Why? What is it about football that drives him so far to be the manager of Real Kashmir FC? For Davie it’s because few things in life can match the highs and lows of football. Real Kashmir are up-and-comers, newly promoted to a league where most of the other teams have much deeper pockets, more fans and a longer history. To beat them Davie must put into action his “masterplan”. But against the background of chaos in Jammu and Kashmir will it ever work? In a place where violent protests erupt most weekends, the electricity is routinely switched off - meaning no internet, phones, or television - even the basics can be a struggle, so organising and motivating a diverse team drawn from India, Africa and Europe to play top-flight football is no easy task. “Some of the boys pray at different times, some are vegetarian so telling them about a proper diet and running a schedule where everyone is there is always difficult. All the different religions pray at different times!”
However, this is not just a footballing story it's also a story of hopes, dreams, and family. Davie’s obsession with football has driven him to the ends of the earth, and in amongst the struggle for success on the field he has to learn to live in very unfamiliar world, far from his wife Kym. Davie’s used to the comforts his success in football brought him. With Kym and his two children he enjoyed living in the States – where he moved after his playing career came to an early end – but his son, Mason, is now a regular in the Real Kashmir team, living in Srinagar near his father. Together they have a chance to explore a part of the world that is both stunningly beautiful and so riven with violence that the UK’s Foreign Office advises against all but essential travel to the team’s home base in Srinagar.
Kym worries about Davie and Mason living and working in a conflict zone. When Davie announced that the move to Kashmir was a possibilty Kym - a self confessed "football widow" - says only half joking that "divorce was considered". "David came in with the Real Kashmir deal and tried to sell it to me. I'm like 'no, not doing it'. So we didn't speak and then on New Year's Eve 2016 David got on a plane to India!".
As the new season – the first since Davie helped Real Kashmir secure promotion to the Indian “I” League - starts Davie needs to make sure his team believes they can win. It is here that manager can lift ordinary players into world-beaters. As each big game approaches everything needs to be right. He’s lifted his team before and gotten them promoted but can they succeed in the new league? Is Davie's masterplan for success is going to work? Has what it takes to be a manager.
Davie actually has 3 kids! Two boys and a girl.

Really enjoyed that and he had some cracking one liners. His wife also had massive fun bags.

That was a really good programme. Never realised that Davie Robertson was a nutbag. Hopefully it works out well for him over there.

His daughter and wife turn up to visit him and Chelsea says she was told to wear a hat as no one has ever saw someone with blonde hair there. Walking along the street then two fannies on a motorbike staring at her trying to show off and the guy sitting on the back of it falls off haha.

That was a brilliant documentary - got to admire him for what he's doing.

Got the impression that he might be more suited to being a journeyman coach and going to these types of countries trying to galvanise a team or start a team from scratch like this.

You just know that the fairies that play in this country would take a huff with him and go running to the chairman. Don't think he'd last too long in a job over here.

I was telling an Indian about this and they wondered whether I was mistaken or whether I was trying a leg-pull. Apparently no one from out with Kashmir is allowed to travel there, not even other Indians.
They were completely mystified as to how Scots and Africans could get permission to visit there let alone work there

Can you imagine him managing Gers v Lennon Celtic team at Parkhead - the fun would start the minute the bus door opened

Always thought of him being a quiet unassuming guy but thinking now he must have had something competitive wise to hold down a regular spot in tyat 9 in a row team. Utter disgrace he never won more Scotland caps. Sure he only got 1 or 2

A fantastic watch. I would urge anybody that hasn’t already watched it to look it up on IPlayer.
I’m genuinely surprised at the type of guy Robertson is. I never thought he would come across the way he does:D Fair play to him, it’s an absolute shithole over there, he could take the easy option and just stay at home.

Well worth the watch, funny and well put together. I didn’t put him down for a nutter but he certainly is!

Watched it in the early hours this morning. Brilliant watch. He’s a bit of a nutter & the patter was great.

Good luck to him.

On again tonight at 2300 on BBC Scotland HD for anybody that missed it.

you would think he could get a job in the UK, seems really passionate and I am sure has his badges, would like to see him doing a Dumbarton type job and working his way up.

Just watched really enjoyed it and seems to be doing an excellent job can’t see it been long before he’s offered a job over here. Anyone think the players have a clue what he’s saying to them ? Currently 4th in their league the now.

I’m a grumpy 45 year old lady's front bottom and sometimes I wonder what my role is in life apart from looking out for my young kids and providing for my family . I hate everyone pretty much and I’m never impressed by anything in life except Rangers winning , certainly not tv shows .

However I will say I really enjoyed that programme so thanks to the bears on here for recommending it , and honestly thanks to Davie Robertson for showing life as it is and not in some premiership perfect bubble of Prozac and faux happiness .

As a grumpy 43 year, you've said everything I needed to say

That was fantastic.

‘I wish I was playing today, I’d be taking bodies’. Can only imagine what the NIAR team talks were like!

A really good watch and fair play to Davie Robertson for taking that gig.

Another really good watch which was posted on here is A view from the terraces.

I really enjoyed watching that documentary - seems incredible that he couldn’t get a job in the UK.

He seems to be doing a cracking job - hope he achieves his goals out there and can then get a role back in the UK.

The swearing did remind me of a match back in the mid-1990s when someone in the East Enclosure was shouting at Robertson and the last thing they expected was him to turn round and go fucking Tonto back at them :D
