Sakala must be raging

Hindsight is a wonderful thing when it comes to penalty kicks. I felt confident having converted our first 3 with Ramsey and Roofe on the last penalties

The top players in the world miss big penalties under pressure. A few of EF’s penalties were a fraction from being saved or hitting the post, it is fine margins

My biggest regret is we did not Get Roofe on earlier and have a go at them.
I guess Gio was thinking about saving Roofe for Saturday.

He has every right to be raging. He takes pens, so it made no sense to take him off and leave Kent on who could hardly walk.

Every sub apart from Davis were wrong, the Sands sub was shocking and a signal we were not even trying to win the game in the 90 mins.

The sands sub allowed us to get our fullbacks higher and actually brought us control of the game.

Would rather have had Fashion hit that No 4 pen than Ramsey. Ramsey walked up and just didnt look confident, I turned round at the Cartuja beamback, boys moaning at me to turn around but I knew he was missing it. Fashions steps up you just know he's smashing it.
Going all that way turn your back on your team

No he wasn't his team selection was strange to say the least ,Roofe will be away shortly and if I was Sakala I would ask to go to,it's going to be a nervy next season with Gio in charge I am not convinced by him yet.
If he wasn't saving him, then why didn't he put him on earlier? This is a one-off match with
huge rewards. We have one match left against Hearts, who we just beat with our B team.

We don't need Roofe to beat hearts. I was saying it in jest because I see no bloody reason
why Roofe stayed planted on the bench. He looked good when he came on.

Who honestly cares about Sakala. I'm more concerned about our fans who have given everything to support the team

I’m sure there’s 10000s of fans raging with Sakalas contribution last night, in fairness

I would have had Ramsey down for taking a penalty

Disaster of a loan but he's played in big games and would be able to handle the pressure of taking a penalty in a game like that

It's unfortunate it didn't work out and in Hindsight it was the wrong move but I probably would have done the same

Sakala was fecking woeful! Put us under no end of pressure, and IMO the luckiest player to be in this squad let alone a Europa final.

Of all emotions, the one he should be feeling is regret that he had a negative impact on a major final.

Sakala isnt good enough. His final ball from wide and his shooting just don't hold up. When he loses possession then it often puts us into a bit of trouble. That said, his movement was making them uncomfortable. Then there's the argument against putting a cold player who hasnt been involved in the game into a high pressure situation. Ramsey made an absolute mess of the penalty.

For the sake of a couple of minutes we'd have been better sticking with him. And Roofe could have done with coming on at 105 minutes. Bigger issues overall are how poor a number of players who started the game were. Goal aside, Aribo was rotten. Spent much of his time on the park looking completely lost. You can add Kamara in there too. He was terrible. Kent also never threatened enough. So much so that Frankfurt could go man for man most of the night and let their 4 midfielders swamp us in the middle of the park because our attacking players weren't threatening and their midfield never had to track back to help out.

Sakala was no worse than 3 or 4 Rangers players last night.

Thing is, Sakala has a history of it, he just isnt upto what we need, along with several squad players and we need better. We were poor in terms of the overall performance last night, weather, nerves etc all played a part. Just a bridge too far.

I'm not defending him. He isnt good enough to be a Rangers player.

But I'd have kept him on ahead of Ramsey. Ramsey has been an unmitigated flop.

Has bringing on a substitute for a penalty ever worked for a team?
I suppose you could say it worked with Roofe.

Given Barisic wasn’t able to take one, I‘d have had Lundstram taking instead of Ramsey. Not sure if he was making his case at the end just before pens started. I’d not have bright Ramsey on.

Yep
When we signed him I was leaping for joy!

To be fair though, I wouldnt have Sakala anywhere near a pen either, gives me the fear!

Kent should have won us the match near the end.

That's ridiculous Sakala might have missed too, had Ramsey scored you would have been praising him and Gio for the right call! I was hoping he would have given Roofe and Ramsey last 15min but might not have made a difference, it's all is and buts!

I’ve said it all season long. 1 goal doesn’t erase a season of mediocrity.
My stance has been and is, he’s not a footballer. He’d be a great sprinter, but he doesn’t have a footballing brain, McCoist will tell you the exact same thing
The McCoist that signed Kevin Kyle and put him 8k per week? That mcCoist? Cool.

We are all human and in that sense it’s never easy to see that happen to one of our players , especially someone as positive in personality as Sakala . That being said , I trust the manager who see’s the players taking penalties every day to make the right call on our takers .

When Sands came on they had no threat down that side.

Funny how we had the best chances in extra time!

I wouldn’t have had Sakala down for one of the first five penalties. Nor would I have brought Ramsey on to take one of the first five either. Lundstram, given he’s on the crest of a wave currently, was the man to take the Ramsey penalty. Looked to be making his case just before they started the pens. Only after you get beyond 5-5 is there a case for either of Sakala/Ramsey IMHO. Roofe was a gamble also but at least he’d had a couple of involvements and a feel of the ball before full-time. Not sure Ramsey had touched the ball.

True

The keeper saved it. If he had done a Veria I could understand the moans

Sakala can have no complaints, he was poor when he was on.

He’s very limited but what makes him worse is that he fails to understand his only attribute is pace and he needs to run in behind and take people on when there’s space beyond.

He constantly wants to drop deep where his poor touch and lack of awareness is exposed.

If you don’t believe me have a look at his teammates screaming at him for it and usually ignoring him when he comes deep.

Barisic gave him one to feet last night, he lost it and invited an attack against us.

Limited footballer with a very poor understanding of what he should be doing.

Disagree. Hes a poor player and had a poor game. His disappointment should be at himself.

I would've had zero confidence in him bagging his penalty

You’re obviously a fan of Sakala, great, Good for you.

If he’s anywhere near the starting 11 in games next year we are fucked
He has a one in three strike rate in spite of never getting a run of games and playing wide.

He played crucial parts in games v scum, Aberdeen, hearts and Motherwell this season. He's not the finished article but as a club we need to be taking on players and improving them. He was free. I've seen far bigger names with bigger price tags not contribute as much as he has this season.

Being thrown on with 15 minutes to go every fortnight is a tough gig. It's also his first season in a new country. I think you need to view the Fuller perspective and not have your sole focus on a few mislaid passes or mistimed runs.

Our whole team cost 13million, we're not going to be signing run of the mill like maupay or Watkins because they cost double our squad.

If you take the time to watch his game you'll see when he's on the pitch we create far more opportunities. To say wel be fucked is reactionary claptrap.

Fashion is a power runner who's head is down far to often and management have little faith in him and hence why Wright started. His future looks bleak and if Roofe was fit he should have come on or we should have been pushing a youth rather than untrusted players. The player feels it and I feel sorry for Fashion but he is not our future but if your going to play him then back him! Poor management choices.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing,

9/10 people would have taken Ramsay over Sakala every day of the week

Truth is Sakala isn't a very good footballer. You have no idea how he;ll play so there is a lack of faith in his ability or lack of ability

While I agree with you that Sakala is poor.

Mccoist used to say Morelos was poor up until last season!

Arguably they should both might be considered for sale anyway.

Roofes goal return is good (1 in 2) but he's played 70odd of an available 120odd games in the last two seasons and a few of those games were him returning from injury and not fit for 90. If Alfie goes we need a striker who plays most games. He has 2 years left on his deal and if an offer comes in close to what we paid for him then I think he should go. I wouldn't give him away cheaply though.

Sakala, is an enigma. Likeable fella but isn't a prolific striker and isn't a creative enough when playing wider. It is a pattern over his career and not likely to change.

I guess Gio was thinking about saving Roofe for Saturday.
Not sure it was saving him so much as knowing he wasn't really fit enough to play a major part. People have pointed to the run that set up Kent but that was one sprint, and I suspect he was on the bench because the bench was big enough and he's a specialist penalty taker.

Id wager his numbers are better than Kents this season and far less game time. He's become a whipping boy after any bad result. We had pages full of praise when he scored in the OF a few weeks ago but now he's shite because we lost

He was his usual woeful self when he was on the pitch tbf. Roofe must only have been fit to come on and take a pen or there’s no way he wouldn’t have come on when Sakala did.

That said, still more confident he’d have scored than I was with Ramsey.

This 100%

The manager could have made 100 different decisions in the game. As long as we lost people would be criticising all of them.

I guarantee the same people moaning that Sakala didnt take a penalty would have been apoplectic if he'd missed and Ramsay wasn't on the pitch.

There's a reason why we're all sat in the house writing on a message board and Gio is on the touchline managing our team in a Euro final.

While I agree with you that Sakala is poor.

Mccoist used to say Morelos was poor up until last season!
He's always maintained Morelos is a poor finisher, as in not a natural finisher, his technique while hitting the ball etc. He's never IMO said he was a poor player though

Sands sub- changed extra time and gave us the control
Sakala- runs about like a lot then it’s a guessing game what will happen when he gets the ball. People will say abt his touch that started an attack but the one where he was in the box and basically rolled the ball to the keeper was woeful
Ramsey- a few inches higher and that’s in but it was a terrible pen trying to copy bale
Gio- tactics were spot on against a GOOD team. Some people forget the money these other teams have and spend more money on one player than our full team.

Getting to the final was a fantastic achievement and what hurts the most is knowing we could have won it in extra time.
