Fifth coach accused of child sex abuse at Celtic Football Club

A fifth coach at Celtic FC’s feeder club has been accused of child sex abuse, The Times can disclose.

Four senior figures at Celtic Boys Club have been convicted of molesting dozens of young players over four decades.

Now Lyness Malley, a former coach and official with the boys’ club, has been accused of repeatedly abusing a young player at Barrowfield, a Glasgow training ground owned by the senior club. It is alleged he rubbed oil on a boy in the changing rooms on multiple occasions and touched his genitals and buttocks.

Mr Malley, 81, strongly denies the claims, insisting that they are malicious and motivated by a desire for revenge after he dropped his accuser from his team. He accepted that he had regularly massaged the thighs of his players with oil but said there was no sexual motivation behind it. He said that he had never touched boys inappropriately.

Civil action is being prepared against Celtic FC over its alleged failure to protect the boy from abuse, said to have taken place in 1969 and 1970.

A number of further court summonses are due to be served against Celtic FC by Thompsons solicitors, which is representing about 20 abuse survivors, early next year.

Mr Malley, who served over decades as a coach, treasurer and minutes secretary with the boys’ club, was interviewed by police in connection with the allegations but the case did not proceed because of a lack of corroboration — an essential requirement in Scots law.

Thompsons alleges that Celtic FC failed to carry out “suitable and sufficient checks” on youth coaches and did not monitor them appropriately.

While expressing “regret and sorrow” for the victims, Celtic FC has refused to accept responsibility for abuse, where found, within the boys’ club — insisting it was an entirely separate organisation.

Mr Malley said he had always acted appropriately with the children. “I’m not that type of person,” he told The Times. “I have done nothing wrong.”

Mr Malley, who also held a senior position with the Scottish Youth Club Association, added that he had no memory of his accuser.

In February Frank Cairney, 83, former manager of the boys’ club, was convicted of sexually abusing young footballers and was jailed. He had his sentence reduced last month.

In May Jim McCafferty, 73, a former Celtic FC kit man and boys’ club coach, admitted 12 child sexual abuse charges and was jailed for six years.

Last year Gerald King, 66, one-time chairman of the boys’ club was convicted of abusing four boys and a girl. Jim Torbett, 71, who helped to found it, was jailed for six years.

Mr Malley, who was involved with the feeder club from 1969 until the late 1980s, said he had no inkling that systematic abuse had been taking place.

Thompsons solicitors urged abuse victims to come forward. Celtic FC did not respond to a request for comment.

It actually defies belief how lightly this is being taken. In any right minded country, people would be shouting paedophile ring from the rooftops. It’s the elephant in the room that nobody wants to talk about. The Scottish government actually went out of their way to exclude sports clubs and religious organisations from it’s public inquiry about child abuse. Why the hell would they do that? It’s an absolute disgrace.

Time has to be called on this evil organisation. It seems, just like on the pitch where the refs let them away with murder that the authorities are similarly lenient. Uefa also keep allowing then to breach rules with no proper censure. The silence too from government is deafening.

I just don’t get it. Were it rangers there’d be documentaries, government enquiries, front page splashes and calls for us to shut down.

A full "Penn State" style investigation and punishment must be undertaken. Sadly there's more chance of Wick Academy winning the Champions League in my lifetime than there is for the SNP to bite the hand that feeds it.

Let’s not forget that these 5 do not include the official club photographer who had pictures spanning decades found in his locker at the ground or Strachan from Celtic east. There was a ring. They are being protected for votes.

None of the boys in the photos were ever traced either. That defies belief. It makes you wonder just how much effort was put into tracing these boys and how many of them would have suffered some sort of abuse.

Should be shouting from the rooftops now for a independent enquiry, another coach abusing his power and trust @CBC.

disgusting and nothing more than a sports charity sex club for abusing younger children under the umbrella of footy as a front and it now beckons to treasure’s and staff away from football.
shame on this country and government.

Bog standard reply from yer average 'shettleston'

It happened at your club as well.

No it didn't.

And this is the most important point.

The SNP will legislate and make sure this guy's misdemeanours don't count.

You have to count on the scum vote, en bloc.

How the fuuk did a group of like-minded degenerate bastards come together at one time? Were they all Sellik supporting pederasts that formed a boys club to enable them to carry out their evil acts whilst benefiting their football club at the same time? Or was it coincidence that so many paedos just happened to be employed by that club? Did they all know about each other?

The Times newspaper have been the only news outlet who have consistently reported on this scandal and deserve credit for not caving in and burying the news about the child abuse

The SNP have done their best to ignore and protect Nonce FC too. Disgusting

Even Adam Tompkins has gone very quiet on the matter

It’s well overdue an independent UK wide investigation into this scandal

I wouldn’t trust anyone in Scotland as I believe they will be intimidated and threatened

When is this going to come to a financial payout to the multiple victims ??

When in the apology from the club ??

When is the public inquiry ??

Shame, Shame, Shame .

Someone somewhere has to expose this .

Still they wait, still they wait, for in their sick fùckin minds, the more kids to come forward from 'other' clubs the better it is for them - 'See it happened everywhere, not just Parkhead'

They are Animals, the whole sordid Club, its staff and those associated with the cover up.
6 , 7, 8 at least now but not a peep from Klackson about the 'undeniable ring' .
Throw in the Cardinals, Priest's and the likes of Saville pictured at that place and this should be worldwide news.

This is being hushed from the very top of society and Government - Its the only rational reason?

the very second cetlic said they were having an internal investigation or when the first victim took them to court they should've been hit with a transfer embargo. How can the footballing authorities allow the mentally challengeds to spend millions on players when victims are chasing compo? how can celtic be allowedto continue as though nothing has happened?

Fair point. What's happened to e Scorries this season anyway? Can't compete with the oil money?
Tbh I don’t know , team is stale , manager doesn’t seem to know his best side , total apathy from top to bottom in the club. Crowds are well down , I’ve only been to 3 games I think , seen more Thurso fc matches - actually more enjoyable to watch.
brora are coasting to the title since cove are no longer in the hfl, I’d say this will continue for a decade

The anguish, hurt and shame that this guy has been through - none of which was his fault. Then to have the courage to face up to the fact he was abused and dare to tell someone, showing real bravery........

........to have it reduced to being done 'in revenge' for having been dropped from the team.

They know how ridiculous that sounds? Not to mention (again) showing zero respect for the victims of abuse.
