Scotland Euro 2020 statistically the worst campaign in 63 years

What got to me after the friendly 2-2 with the Oranj was that the tärriers in all the papers were highlighting how it really was a ’celtc’ (sic) side and not Scotland. That is their mentality. Hence, I for one do not wish the Scottish team well until there is a semblance of balance in the team and one that does not promote any specific set of players from one domestic team or had previously been with them. He selects too many from the dark side instead of using his head and going for the best players available such as happened when he played Gilmour. We have seen the results of his selection process - 2 defeats. It’s not good enough. Souness called him out. Clarke and his dinosaurus way of playing has to go.

This small nation excuse wears thin, Croatia are smaller than Scotland, Souness was spot on last night our tactics are from another era and we are miles behind coaching standards that other countries.
Commentator said last night that this week marks the 24th anniversary of Croatia being independent , a nation of 4 million. look at their tournament record, compare it to ours.
Big big riddy for scotland

SCOTLAND'S Euro 2020 campaign was statistically the WORST of any tournament where they played three games in their group, stretching back 63 years.

Steve Clarke's side exited the tournament after collecting just one point in three games following home defeats to Czech Republic and Croatia and a draw in England.

It meant Scotland have now failed to qualify from a group in 11 major tournaments.

Only three times before at major tournaments where Scotland have played three group games, have they managed to pick up just one point.

In the World Cup in 1958, Scotland only got one point and when Alex Ferguson was in the caretaker manager's role in Mexico in 1986, and in 1998 when Craig Brown's side played in France, Scotland only picked up a solitary draw and two defeats too.

At Euro 2020, Scotland had a goal difference of minus four after two-goal defeats to the Czechs and Croats and scored just once.

In 1958, Scotland drew with Yugoslavia and suffered narrow defeats to Paraguay and France to end up with a goal difference of minus two, while scoring four goals.

Mexico 86 saw the Scots lose their first two games to Denmark and West Germany before drawing with Uruguay.

They also only managed to score one goal, but their goal difference was only minus two.

And in France, Brown's boys drew with Norway in between losing to Brazil and Morocco.

Their goal difference was also minus four, but unlike Clarke's side, they managed to score two goals.

In all other tournaments with three games, Scotland have collected more than a point, but still exited at the first round with varying degrees of heartache.

The 1954 World Cup saw Scotland play only two games in their group, which they lost.

Below, you can look back on the national team's record in full in tournaments with groups with three games.

Scotland's record in groups with three games

World Cup 1958: Points: 1; Scored: 4; Conceded: 6.

World Cup 1974: Points: 4; Scored: 3; Conceded: 1.

World Cup 1978: Points: 4; Scored: 5; Conceded: 6.

World Cup 1982: Points: 4; Scored: 8; Conceded: 8.

World Cup 1986: Points: 1; Scored: 1; Conceded: 3.

World Cup 1990: Points: 3; Scored: 2; Conceded: 3.

Euro 92: Points: 3; Scored: 3; Conceded: 3.

Euro 96: Points: 3; Scored: 1; Conceded: 2.

World Cup 1998: Points: 1; Scored: 2; Conceded: 6.

Euro 2020: Points: 1; Scored: 1; Conceded: 5.
These stats are the litany of failure! Im sad that I was too young and living overseas when Scotland went to WC 1974. That team had a genuine opportunity to go far. Even the overhyped 1978 team had potential. 1982 still had some quality but the wheels fell off after that.

Between 1998-2021 nothing changed and nothing was learned.

23 wasted years.

If anything we went backwards and lucked our way to one major tournament.

It will take new ideas, infrastructure, coaching methods and a root and branch change and it will need a generation to reap the rewards.

Scotland will not commit time, energy and resources to lasting change and unless we manage to bring througu a bumper crop of talent that fulfils it’s potential then we’ll perhaps sneak the odd qualification here and there.
Sorry, but we have heard all this before. How many reviews do they need?
The fact that so many scots are now playing in the EPL or making it with rangers and them, proves that we can develop the players. At their clubs they have the best facilities and diets medical science can offer.
The only thing lacking at national level is coaching and tactics.

So was I and they were not top class players. If you watched us get royally fucked by Brazil in Seville you would have seen a team full of top class players and none of them were Scottish.

McGrain, Souness, Dalglish, Hansen
to a lesser extent Robertson, Archibald, Strachan

might not have performed but that selection is light years better than the current crop

I think he also mentioned we were unbeaten against them, only played them 4 or 5 iirc times :))

Get a coaching team/ manager in who will alter the way we play and set up. Ball on the deck and pass pass pass. Select the players who will fit that criteria, ditch the rest.

They speak about English arrogance but the idea that Scotland had a great chance to progress through a group containing England and recent World Cup runners up Croatia was something else.

It meant a lot of pressure on the match with Czech Republic… and the manager went for a safety first approach that blew up on him.

Add to that the idea that London should be delighted to have tens of thousands arrive with no tickets and standin the streets singing about hating, “the f’ing English”.

Scotland has the basis of a strong enough team, a log way to go before they are serious challengers to qualify out of tough groups though. The support need to understand that the world has moved on from thinking that folk turning up and getting rattled on booze and baring their arse is all great fun as well.

And we had all sorts of pundits(clowns) saying they were the best team ever all because of a draw against a shite england team and the expectation of beating an aged over the hill croatian team.
Classic example of clowns forgetting class is permanent and one decent performance means eff all if you can't compete with decent players no matter what age. To actually think this collection of players could qualify for a stage in a tourney where other far superior scotland teams couldn't is embarrassing.

They have proper footballers and managers though. Likewise, former Yugoslavia had some stunning footballers before they split apart too. No wonder they are World Cup runners-up, even though like the Belgians, those heroes are getting on a bit.

Objectivly looking back at this group would probably yield the conclusion that Scotland can count themselves lucky to get away with one point. No reason to compare them to other nations like the Finns either, when their groups are/were not as tough. Which is not to say that the Scots would have been any better anywhere else. The current crop of Scottish internationals just isn`t any good and the manager(s) simply has no clue of building a team around the best guys he has (McTominay, Robertson, Armstrong et al), which is no wonder, given his utter lack of international experience.

At the end of the day, I wonder when someone will blame us on this, for not producing enough quality Scottish talent etc. ...

Before the tournament started I didn't expect Scotland to get a point so you could say they exceeded expectations.

But the amount of positivity that has been spouted is pure unjustified loony tunes.

We have half a team that should be nowhere near international football. Add in a manager who knows as much about football as I do about how women's brains work and it's a recipe for exactly what we got, nothing.

Clarke's first priority is and, always has been, not to lose. If you manage to accidently get a win then fair enough. Trouble wi that is when the opposition get a goal you're fcuked. And his unwillingness to play the young prospects, for whatever reason, is another reason why he should be invited to fcuk off.

23-years' ago today, Scotland played its last World Cup tournament fixture against Morocco. They lost 3-0 and were eliminated from France 98 at the Group Stage. Scotland's team that day -

Leighton (Aberdeen), McNamara (Celtic), Boyd (Celtic), Hendry (Blackburn Rovers, captain), Weir (Hearts), Burley (Celtic), Collins (Monaco), Lambert (Celtic), Dailly (Derby County), Gallacher (Blackburn Rovers), Durie (Rangers).
Substitutes - Sullivan (Wimbledon), Gould (Celtic), Elliott (Leicester), McKinlay (Celtic), Whyte (Celtic), Gemmill (Nottingham Forest), Booth (Borussia Dortmund), Donnelly (Celtic).

Just 1-Ranger in that lot but at least he managed to stay on the field, unlike that clown Burley who got sent off.

I wonder if the SFA/SPFL will care to explain the continued failures?

It wasn’t that long we had a few loose brain cells on here foaming at the mouth for this throbber to be our saviour.

I wouldn’t, we got a great result against our traditional rivals in a major tournament at their ground. Celebrating it is fine.

The ones who should feel like tits are the guys singing in George Sq and the guys singing about Harry Kane in the Central Station toilets last night.
I don't think celebrating a draw is acceptable in any sport.

Scottish football needs a total revamp from bottom to top.

It will take time.

But, 2 things could make an impact over a shorts space of time.

Referees to ref like they would in Europe. i.e. punish thuggery. Maybe then there would be more of a view to progressing players with skill rather than physicality. I think that could change things very quickly.

Get rid of the 4x per season.

How many times has a new player burst onto the scene. By the time we get to the 2nd round of fixtures, the opposition know how to play him out of the game.

Throw in a League cup tie and a Scottish Cup tie with replay - and you are watching the same teams 7 times a season.

As for the National set-up, they put Malky Mackay in charge of youth development ffs.

As well as Clarke, you have the Englishman who played for Ireland (Reid) and John effing Carver! Hardly inspiring.

People claiming Clarke as some managerial guru for getting us into this tournament need a reality check.
Only a handful of recognised football nations in Europe failed to qualify.
It has no comparison to qualifications for past tournaments.

That Brazil team were the best side never to win a World Cup.
They were brilliant.

Just got a bit of the Scottish News there - unfortunately.

You would thing we had done well!

They were talking "renewed belief". A bit of "spirited performance" and how we "bravely" got back into the game against Croatia.

What a load of absolute garbage!

If 1 point fro 9 is success - what is failure??????

Someone on my FB had commented on Sturgeons page, she said how they were heroes and how proud we’ve been or some bollocks. The following hundreds of fawning comments was boak inducing. Seriously, this country, the cabal who run it and its people really are satisfied with mediocrity. It’s pathetic.

I agree but when assessing players one can only judge them against their peers. That Brazilian team made good Scottish players look very average. The Croats merely confirmed what many suspected; right now we’re shite.

Scotland Today was utterly embarrassing in their praise for abject failure.

Unsurprising from this embarrassing NATsi media outlet.
Celebrating failure is now a common thing in this wee shitehole of a country.

I watched it and couldn't stop laughing.

It was Tartan turd polishing straight from SNP HQ.

Andy Robertson tweet today to included ...”we desperately wanted to make even more history....”
Says a lot about the squad mentality. EVEN MORE history?
They did make history.

First Scottish team to qualify through the Nations League by beating nobody who is any use.

There are Scotland fans that wouldn’t have minded going out the group as long as they had beaten England. That right there is a flaw and a weakness of mentality. It portrays limited vision and a chip on the shoulder attitude. It’s all about England for a lot of these fans.
Another word for it is bigotry as it’s meaning is defined in the dictionary…”blind hatred” and it doesn’t half blind them.
