Club 1872 Statement

http://club1872.co.uk/news/club-1872-statement-on-unacceptable-behaviour/

Club 1872 fully supports the stance of Rangers and Rangers’ manager, Steven Gerrard in condemning all unacceptable behaviour in Scottish football. It is absolutely clear to us that Rangers has done and continues to do what it reasonably can to address this issue, which remains a problem amongst a minority of all clubs’ supporters and wider society. We will be happy to work with the club on future initiatives in this area.

Unfortunately we see absolutely no viable way to eradicate these sporadic instances of unacceptable behaviour, as long as elements of the Scottish media, Scottish politicians and interest groups continue to sensationalise incidents based on their own prejudice or self interest.

We are in the absurd situation where last weekend Sky pundit, Andy Walker, laughed about sectarian abuse of Kris Boyd and then days later took the polar opposite approach to similar abuse of Steve Clarke. We have seen four BBC Scotland pundits and journalists completely ignore the sectarian abuse of Kris Boyd but comment extensively on social media following the Steve Clarke incident.

This is not just a media phenomenon, however. James Dornan MSP, a self styled sectarianism crusader who himself posed in front of a terrorist flag, ignored the sectarianism directed at Kris Boyd by fans of the club he supports, Celtic, but has now publicly demanded talks with Rangers over the Steve Clarke incident.

Groups like Nil By Mouth and Show Racism the Red Card Scotland have taken the same approach – they completely ignored “orange b****rd” chants directed at Boyd but immediately sprung into action when Steve Clarke spoke about the subject.

If the Scottish establishment is serious about tackling these issues then we should have a real debate about the causes and possible solutions. This will require discussing not just football, despite its higher profile, but having a fair and honest discussion about other contributing factors in society.

We sense absolutely no appetite in Scotland to have that debate – almost every comment on the subject is superficial, one eyed or sensationalised. The term ‘whataboutery’ is now routinely used to shoot down any voice that requests parity in the treatment of these events. In fact, the sum total of the debate thus far has been manufactured media outrage, politicians with an agenda to raise their own profile and groups who rely on the publicity around these issues, as they relate to football, for funding.

Club 1872 will be happy to take part in any honest dialogue on this subject, if such dialogue ever begins.

Poor statement. It comes out as petty. Just like me on Twitter but not the tone I want from my supporters association.

Good statement.

One comment however i would like to make is I did hear Scott of NBM being interviewed on Radio news regarding the Boyd abuse on Monday/Tuesday morning.

Great statement.

Now that is a proper statement.

Its both balanced and accurate but you can bet your bottom dollar it wont get the same mhedia coverage as the Alkys presser today. The same person who unbelievably we are led to believe didnt even hear that his club captain was subjected to "sectarian" (according to the BBC) abuse last week and wasnt aware that he had been hit by a coin either.

If only a journalist had the balls to write a story like the C1872 statement that would be nice.

A statement with far more nuance to it than the official guff the club released.

Sectarianism is a social problem. It is nothing to do with football.

If you genuinely want to tackle it then you need to examine the role and value of denominational schooling in a modern society. That's a debate no one in Scotland's political class wants to have therefore all this is bullshit.

People on here will still complain and moan like children, which says far more about the individual than the club or the supporters group.
C1872 have picked up the slack on Kings statement! Excellent work
If we don't get parity then *** is fair game alongside OB, I'm sure either works for most.
Let's see how the media twist this?

I think the statement is concise and relevant.
It hits all the correct marks.
The only thing missing was a comment on the earlier game at The Jimmy Savile Arena where Steven Gerrard was treated to almost half of the Filth support calling him an Orange Bastrd loud and clear and in the biggest televised game in Scottish football the apparent showpiece event.
Amazingly given the amount of outrage since Wednesday, all of those mentioned in the above statement totally ignored it.
Such was their absolute silence one can only assume they condoned it.

Well said. We are not the reason for sectarianism in this country and until society as a whole admits that and stops blaming 1 football club,(us) then we will always be living in a skewed society that doesn't want to address the real issues.

We have had plenty of sectarian abuse aimed at our club and manager from opposing fans and we need to highlight this more to ever have a chance of any sort of parity

Poor statement. It comes out as petty. Just like me on Twitter but not the tone I want from my supporters association.
You are
Why havnt RANGERS OR CLUB1872 MENTIONED THE SECTARIAN ABUSE OUR MANAGER revieced at Celtic park
You stick with the relevant issue to start with and when the debate or fight grows then you produce the further body of evidence.

Good statement.

What is amazing is that we have the journalists and politicians who have no doubt worked pretty hard to get to where they are.
Put lots of time in at school getting the qualifications to head for Uni.
Working bldy hard to get the required qualification/degree and then move to professional life.
Yet after all that effort they then cant get passed their favourite footie team.
Nope not a hint of professional pride if the football team they support do a dead bad thingy, that can be ignored
But all over it if it involves a footie team who aint their besties.

Seriously, adults who have worked hard to get in a position of some respect, (or it should be) can just forget all the effort, forget any professional pride, can ignore the facts that don't quite fit with a scarf colour.

Such is life in the west of Scotland.
