I think Scotland is more bitter and divided than it has ever been in my lifetime, and quite possibly since the days of the Jacobite Uprisings (now there's a shock!).
Rangers were always hated by the other clubs but it was mostly banter, counter chants and the like, and you could actually stand on a terracing next to a supporter of Hearts, Hibs, Motherwell etc and we each gave as good as we got. Now with the internet we are the arch enemy of all of them. They see us as cheats and bigots and God knows what else. You can hang effigies of Rangers supporters from stands and it's "banter" (I liken it to the KKK in the Deep South but there you go). You can be as racist as you like towards the best player in the country, purely because he plays for Rangers, and the football authorities and Police won't bat an eyelid, because it's Rangers and it's to be expected. And an SNP MP can post he won't represent anyone who is pro-Union and against higher taxes and it's considered reasonable.
I used to have good mates who were Celtic supporters but now I avoid them as much as I can as they are beyond intolerable, and the same goes for so many supporters of other clubs. There's a government in Scotland that is deeply anti-English and all things British and so many of the electorate seem to find this acceptable.
I despair of what Scotland has become. I've been living in England on and off since 1991 and permanently since 2002 but had always intended moving back home at some point. But the Scotland of 2020 does not feel like the country I grew up in in the 60s/70s/80s and 90s and I can't see me ever wanting to live there again sadly.
