Obviously not "happy", but glad it wasn't a total scudding. 4 is still the most we've conceded in CL, and as paltry as that is, I'm glad of it. Leave the 6,7,8 nil thumpings to the scum
Maybe but we have still got Napoli away. I wouldn't discount any kind of score overthereo_O

We shouldnt of went with 5 at the back tonight next week we should play 4 at the back & drop king hope fashion colak matonda & jack start night week to only lose because of freekick & penalty isnt bad from 70 mins onwards we played well
Yep when the game is done and the other team know that - just like parkhead.

Or we could keep playing an out of form disinterested kent out left and trying to shoehorn players who are not right wingers onto the right wing

I'm not sakalas biggest fan... Or matondos but they showed more passion and ambition in their first few minutes on the pitch than kent or tillman.
Have to agree with Rino.
I'm not a fan of Sakala or Matondo but they played with their all tonight.
Also scunners me why we insist with Tillman out right, number 10 or nothing.

I think the most frustrating thing is that we make ourselves look bad. In very brief glimpses, we moved the ball well. But too often when in a good (or at least attacking) position, we shat it and looked to recycle it all the way backwards, and inevitably turned it over without a shot at goal to show for it. I just... don't understand what Gio is telling them to do, or else their failure to execute if he's telling them something different.

We didn't keep it tight though. They played through us and McGregor made saves into double figures.

It's fine to say getting any sort of result tonight was a stretch, but to try and make excuses for how we performed just isn't on, in my opinion. The setup should have changed and the line up wasn't right. How many times are we going to see Tillman play on the right of midfield?

Not until Gio made the changes did it look like we'd nick anything.
Agreed but that's the full argument. There is a hope, more than expectation against teams of that quality where you can keep it live until late in the game. We see it every week against us domestically. It's no different.

Tillman and Lundstrom gave us nothing.
lunstrom yellow was the same as every yellow this season, hitting a guy who is running away from him.
alan saved a hammering.
one strange stat, we only lost one header from a corner, and that was after Davies went off. I expected van dyke to have a field day.

Listen we are not the same team as last year but we need to realise the opposition. Arguably two teams that could make the final and Ajax who could go very far. Ajax just lost by 5 goals at home ffs.

This nonsense about not trying is just that. We played a system with the intent on Tillman holding the ball as he certainly doesn't have the pace to get in behind. We are never going to have ball control against Liverpool.

It was the wrong team and we got lucky on occasion but they won with 2 dead ball situations. The intent was to keep it tight and try and nick something at the end. It wasn't a million miles off that.

Hopefully we go at it next week with the crowd behind us and we give one of the fast players a go to infiltrate the space.

They are arguably the best team in the world, maybe not on current form but over the last 5 years they've been in 3 Champions League finals. Anyone expecting us to do anything other than sit in and try and nick a goal is off their head.
I take your point Liverpool are a good team but you don't go into a match and defend your 18 yard box for 90 minutes you need more than that!

I am aware of that, and Liverpool at Ibrox could go badly as well. It's unfortunately just at that point where I'm wanting to avoid breaking bad records. I want at least a goal and at least a point, with hopefully no record breaking defeat

In a perfect world I agree but sometimes playing against better calibre opposition forces you back. Its just natural.

When you played football when you were younger there were times you were hemmed in, often for the full game against a better team. You didn't want to sit back but you didn't have the cohesion or capacity to get up the park. It's no different.

If I was at a Casino and Kent was on the roulette table, I'd wait to see what colour he placed his bet on, and bet the opposite every time. I'd be a gazillionaire.

Never seen a player make so many bad decisions, i.e. 1v1 do you take on the man? make him challenge in the box or cut inside and have a pop at the exposed keeper? nope ofc not, try and cross it to no one. Classic Kent.

Despite the fact it was only 2-0 I found the whole thing embarrassing, we have regressed so much over the last few months and are well down the pecking order in European football. Press us and we cave in giving the ball away umpteen times and then to slow to do anything about it.

I'll give credit where credits due and last season in Europe he was immense but he really needed to step up tonight and he failed. Should be the leader on the park.
He’s a leader when our tails are up. When the going gets tough? He shits the bed. Forever grateful for his services. I will leave it at that.

Might not be popular on here but Barasic should be done as a starter for us , he offers nothing absolutely zilch defensively and what he offers going forward is next to nothing, he actually has to be forced forward as he can’t do it for himself.

If Yilmaz is showing nothing in training then Wilson should be getting his jotters for this alone never mind his other transfer %^*& ups.

Seems like there’s a thread for every player tonight in the beat pit.

A disappointing night but one I can live with.

Liverpool do what we should be doing, pressing all over the pitch.

We won’t see it from this manager but I’ve got no great issue with the effort tonight.

We need a win now on Saturday as the league is very much alive still.

I agree, but Napoli beat them using pressure & pace.
We didn't even attempt that. This Liverpool team is currently vulnerable to being pressed, we were far from being aggressive enough, with or without the ball.

I wouldn’t say he’s done but I’d like to see Yilmaz get some game time.

We were bad tonight but Liverpool are being hailed as the team of the century on BT here after that performance

Gio and the majority of the team believed they were underdogs. McGregor, Matondo and Sakala played with belief. They had supreme backing from the best fans in the world for the team so I award McGregor and our amazing supporters Man of the Match

2-0 shouldn’t be treated as a disaster to a top team, but that was really poor. Clear our game plan wasn’t working from early doors, Kent anonymous when we needed him, same with Tillman. Yet both stayed on the field deep into the second half.

We didn’t particularly look organised either and they were cutting though our middle frequently. No composure on the ball and cheap giveaways throughout.

McGregor performance aside, there’s very little we can take from tonight.

So, how do we beat Liverpool next week then?

Mate, Napoli just spanked Ajax 6-1 in Amsterdam and are top of Serie A. They are a proper outfit who can go toe to toe.

I played amateur football as an adult and let me tell you we had guys drinking bucky before, during and after games. So I know what its like to be up against teams who were sober never mind technically better. B-D

Incidentally we won the 3rd, 2nd, and 1st division titles in our region.

Mark my words it will be different at Ibrox for all Liverpool outplayed us it was a penalty and a free.kick that beat us.
Can’t argue with those facts but on any other night if we play as we did in this game we would surely go down to 4 or 5 goals (thank goodness for McGregor though).
If we could at least get the basics right like breaking into something other than a jog, passing forward more often than not (and also to a teammate) and acting like a professional not being intimidated by opponents’ reputations we would at least compete.
Let’s do it in our remaining group games Rangers.

Did people on this thread having ago ever watch us in the champions league when we were getting gubbed by the likes of Juve? We had Laudrup and Gascoigne in the team then, not sure what people are expecting when this is our 1st time in the tournament in 15 years. Reality check needed.
I’d have liked us to not beat on course for one of the worst UCL group stage performances ever

Big gulf in quality tonight, but it took a brilliant free kick and a penalty to beat us.

McGregor was outstanding, but I thought all 3 centre-halves played well - especially King - despite their team mates not being able to keep the ball away from our box for very long. Another disappointing performance from Tav on a big European night.
You say their team mates not able to keep the ball away from them. Problem is to play 5 at the back you are giving up the midfield, ball was never going anywhere other than coming straight back.

Not only that you completely isolate your attacker by giving up the midfield so the only out ball becomes your wingers and you play a no.10 in one of those positions. Whole set up was utterly baffling. Yet last 15 minutes we looked dangerous and not any less solid when we put an extra man in midfield with 2 fast guys on the wings.

From a side that have reached champions league finals in the last 5 years, the top team in serie A and Ajax who bought one of our best players for 20 odd million, sold others making millions. No bother
